Question 17.
Write a paragraph describing the incidents which led to the arrest of Rosa Parks.
Answer:
It was on 1 December 1955 in the town of Montgomery. Rosa Parks worked in a dress maker’s shop. She had been working all day. That day her work was heavier than usual. At the end of the day she thought only of one thing – to sit down. She walked to the bus stop and got on a bus. There were many vacant seats. She paid her fare and sat down in the nearest seat. Her feet were very tired. The driver knew nothing about her or her feet. What he knew was she was a Black person. She was a quiet lady. She did not envy anybody. She broke no law. Before the bus started, many white passengers rushed to the bus. Each time a White passenger entered, a Black passenger got up from his seat and gave the seat to the White passenger. That was the rule. All Black passengers gave their seats to the Whites except Rosa. A White passenger stood near her but she did not get up from her seat. She thought the rule of Blacks giving seats to Whites was unfair. As she did not get up, the driver was angry. He asked Rosa to get up. But she sat still. Then the driver brought the police in, and they arrested Rosa for breaking the rule and she was taken to the jail.

I am writing this letter to tell you about an incident that pained me a lot. You know I had a girl friend, Rosy. She told me the other day that she would dance with me in the ball if I gave her a red rose. I thought she really loved me. I could not find any red rose and so I was sitting and lamenting in my garden.
A nightingale heard my laments and she wanted to help me. She flew around searching for a red rose to give me. But no red rose was found. Finally she pierced her heart on a thorn to bleed onto a white rose and it became red. But in the process the nightingale died for me. I was sorry, but I picked the red rose and brought it to my lover.

Question 20.
The lesson ‘School for Sympathy’ highlights the values like empathy and kindness. The writer EV Lucas was very much impressed by the education system of the school. He drafts his thoughts in the form of a diary. Prepare the likely diary entry.
Answer:
I had heard a lot about Miss Beam’s school. The teaching methods there are quite different. They teach only those things that are simple and useful to students. It is a residential school. Here the students have to take an exercise of going through blind day, lame day, dumb day and deaf day. This is to have first-hand experiences of the physically challenged people, their difficulties, and their special physical, psychological and emotional needs and to generate sympathy and a sense of special responsibility towards them. The real aim of Miss Beam’s school is not to teach thought but thoughtfulness, humanity, kindness and citizenship. Some may think the blind day is the most difficult for the students, but I think the dumb day would be the worst because the child must use his will power because his mouth is bandaged.
