Satyajit Ray had to face several difficulties while shooting the film ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne.’ Prepare a narrative based on Ray’s experience in shooting the film with the tiger.
(Hints: Shooting at Notun Gram – needs tiger for shooting – meets Mr. Thorat – two tigers – unable to control the tigers – shots taken – dark – retake – shooting at Boral – tiger charges at the villagers – shots taken – perfect scenes)
Answer:
To shoot the film “Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne”, Ray and his film crew found a suitable bamboo grove In Notun Gram. As arranged with Mr. Thorat of Bharat Circus, a lorry arrived with two well-fed tigers. He brought two so that if one did not do things properly the other could be used. A tripod was placed facing the bamboo grove to mount the camera. The audience was instructed to get behind the camera. Goopy and Bagha were placed close to the bamboo grove so that they could be seen along with the tiger. A five-foot iron rod was fixed to the ground, some 30 feet from the area where the tiger was to walk. A tiger-skin collar with a thin wire inside was placed on the neck of the tiger. The door of the cage was opened and the tiger jumped out. But instead of walking calmly, it started running and jumping about. When it became calm some shots were taken. However, the shots were later found to be dark owing to poor light.

The scenes had to be shot a second time. A bamboo grove near Calcutta in Boral was found. Terry arrived with Thorat, the tiger, the steel wire, the special collar, and the iron rod. The whole village came to watch the shooting. The villagers were told to keep at least 70 feet away from the scene of the shot. Without listening to the instructions, the entire crowd got as close to the camera as they could. Thorat opened the cage. With a roar the tiger charged towards the crowd. The crowd disappeared as if my magic. Soon the tiger calmed down and the shots were taken as required. This time the tiger and the camera behaved well.

Question 17.
Anton Chekhov’s ‘Vanka’ is a sad story of a nine-year-old boy. Vanka went through intense suffering at the house of Alyakhin. In the light of your reading of the story, prepare a write-up on the topic ‘Preventing child abuse.’
(Hints: Vanka – orphaned child – poverty – physical and mental abuse – unable to react – unaware of child rights – sufferings of parentless children – lack of care – wishes to run away)
Answer:

Preventing Child Abuse

Anton Chekhov’s “Vanka” is a sad story of an orphan named Vanka. He went through intense suffering at the house of Alyakhin. Vanka was only 9 years old when his grandfather Constantin Makarich took him to Alyakhin. Alyakhin was a shoemaker and Vanka was apprenticed to him. In the house of Alyakhin Vanka suffered a lot. He had to rock the baby of Alyakhin in the night. If the baby cried, Vanka got severe beatings from Alyakhin. Alyakhin’s wife was even worse. She rubbed the head of a herring on his face saying that he was cleaning it in the wrong way. Other apprentices made fun of him. They sent him to buy vodka and steal the master’s cucumbers. Vanka is not given enough food to eat. He can’t react against all these injustices. He is not aware of children’s rights.

This is the case with most orphaned children. They are seriously abused and they are made to work hard. They are not given sufficient food and they are made to live in harsh conditions. Vanka wants to run away but he can’t because he has no boots to wear in the frost. So he writes a letter to his grandfather showing his sufferings at Alyakhin’s place. He requests his grandfather to take him away from there. Unfortunately, the letter will never reach Constantin Makarich because it has no proper address. The address simply read “To Grandfather in the village. To Konstantin Makarich”. There are many Vankas in our midst. All those who ill-treat small children should be seriously punished and the children should be given proper care and love.

Rahul (the boy in the story): Good Morning, Raj!

Rahul: Yes, I did. It was a very exciting fight.
Raj: How did you see it?
Rahul: There is a beautiful old banyan tree near my grandfather’s house where we all live. Halfway up the tree, I made a small platform. I could sit and read there and enjoy the sights and sounds around.
Raj: Reading, sitting on the platform on a tree. Sounds wonderful.
Rahul: Yes, it is wonderful. It was when sitting there one day I happened to see the fight between the mongoose and the cobra. They were fighting in the garden.
Raj: Please continue, Rahul. Tell me all about the fight.
Rahul: It was an April afternoon. The warm breeze had kept people inside their homes. I was also feeling drowsy and was thinking of going for a swim in the pond near my house. I then saw a cobra coming out of the cactus bush. It was looking for a cooler place in the garden.
Raj: What happened then?
Rahul: A Mongoose also came out and went towards the cobra. They came face to face. The cobra knew that the 3 feet long mongoose was a fine fighter. But the cobra was also an experienced fighter. His sharp teeth were full of poison. The cobra hissed. His tongue darted in and out.
Raj: How long was the cobra?
Rahul: 6 feet. It raised its spectacled hood. Apart from me, a myna and a jungle crow were watching the fight. The cobra was moving from side to side looking for a chance to attack the mongoose. As the mongoose moved nearer, the cobra struck. But the mongoose jumped to one side and was not struck. Then it bit the snake on the back and moved away.
Raj: What happened then?
Rahul: When the mongoose struck the cobra, the crow and the myna flew fast toward it, but they collided in mid-air and they returned to the cactus. The mongoose struck again and there was blood on the cobra’s back. The crow and the myna dived at the cobra. The cobra struck the crow and the crow died. The myna flew away.
Raj: What about the snake?
Rahul: The snake was weakening. The mongoose picked the cobra by its nose. The cobra coiled around the mongoose. But soon it stopped trying to get away. The mongoose carried the cobra into the bushes. The myna flew away and I came down to inform my grandfather about the fight and the death of the cobra.

The Homoeopath managed to. reach his friend’s house after the terrible incident. He was unable to sleep that night. He jotted down his feelings in his diary. Write the likely diary entry.
Answer:
29 July 1993

Last night was the worst in my life. I had rented a room in a cheap hotel as I hadn’t much money with me. It was 10 o’clock in the hot summer night. I had my meal at a restaurant and returned to my room. There were rats in my room. I lighted the kerosene lamp on the table. I took off my coat, shirt, and vest. I opened the two windows. The room had a tiled roof.

I sat on a chair near the table. There was a mirror nearby. I looked into it and wanted to make myself more handsome. I was a bachelor. I combed my hair and adjusted the parting to look straight and neat. I looked at my face and decided I would shave daily and grow a small mustache.

I lit a beedi and started thinking of my marriage. I would marry a woman doctor with a lot of money and good practice. I wanted to be fat so that if I made a mistake and wanted to run away from her she should not be able to catch up with me.

Suddenly there was a dull thud as if a rubber tube had fallen to the ground. I looked back. A fat snake came over the back of the chair and landed on my shoulder. It slithered along my shoulder and coiled around my left arm. Its hood was spread out. It was just 3 or 4 inches from my face!

I was turned into a stone. I thought of God. There was some pain in my left arm. It was as if a rod of fire was slowly crushing my arm. The arm was losing its strength. But I could not do anything. Even if I moved a little, the snake would bite me. I did not have any medicine against poison.

Suddenly the snake turned its head. It looked into the mirror. It saw its reflection. It slowly unwound itself from my arm and slithered into my lap. From there it crept onto the table and moved towards the mirror. I got up from my chair and ran for my life. I reached a friend’s house. I put oil on my body and took a bath. I changed my clothes. But I could not sleep the whole night. It was the worst night of my life.

Mr. S. John

London WW-105

Dear Mr. John,
I happened to read the anecdote “The Best Investment I Ever Made” by A. J. Cronin. From that, I understand that you and your wife are engaged in various activities that are aimed at the rehabilitation and welfare of backward, maladjusted, and delinquent youth. You take derelict adolescents from the juvenile courts and place them in a healthy environment. You heal them in mind and body and send them back into the world. They are given training in some handicrafts so that they can live as worthy citizens.

I was happy to know the reason for your benevolent work. You had taken some money from the office you worked and you were worried you would be caught and jailed. So you tried to commit suicide. But a policeman, a doctor, and your landlady helped you to overcome your problems. The policeman did not report the case and so there was no trial. Mr. Cronin gave you 7 pounds and 10 shillings to replace the money you had stolen. The landlady offered you a free board for a month. All these acts of kindness changed you and you decided to work for the rehabilitation of the delinquent youth.

I heartily congratulate you and your wife. Keep up the good work!

Yours Sincerely,
(Natasha Joseph)

You have read the play ‘The Never-Never Nest’. Write a paragraph describing how Jack and Jill represent the present-day consumer culture prevalent in our society.
Answer:
Jack and Jill in the play “The Never-Never Nest” by Cedric Mount represent the present-day consumer culture prevalent in our society. It exposes the shams of contemporary society which tries to live beyond its means. It warns people against the modern “Buy Now Pay Later” scheme which tempts people to buy things that are not essential for them. Since they don’t have to pay immediately, they are tempted to buy things that are available in installments. In the play, we see Jack and Jill, a young couple with a baby. Jack earns only 6 Pounds a week. Jill is a housewife. But they go on getting all kinds of luxury items in installments. The monthly installments come to more than 7 Pounds.

To make up the deficit they will take a loan which will further increase their financial burden. In their lounge in the villa, they have fine furniture, a radiogram, and a piano. They also have a refrigerator and a car. But all these and the villa itself are bought in installments. So nothing is their own, even their baby, as they owed money to the doctor. They have to finish the installments to make the baby fully their own. Their Aunt comes and pays them 10 Pounds and Jill pays it to the doctor hoping that at the least the baby in the house will be their own. The play is a warning to. those who live beyond their means and go on buying things in installments.

Answer:
Respected Principal, my dear teachers and friends, It is with joy and sorrow that I stand here. Joy because I have passed the 8th grade and received the scholarship jacket. I am sorrowful because I have to leave this school and my beloved teachers who have made me grow wiser and my friends with whom I have spent 8 years of my childhood. I thank the Principal my teachers and my classmates who have helped me in getting this scholarship jacket. My sister earned it a few years ago and now I am getting it and I am sure my family members will be proud of me.

I take this opportunity to especially thank my History Teacher, Mr. Schmidt, who has helped me in different ways. I will always remember him with gratitude. Before I conclude, I would like to make a suggestion. This year the Board had decided to charge 15 dollars for the jacket. Fortunately for me, the Principal was kind to make an exception and that is why I am getting this jacket. I want to say to everyone concerned that a scholarship jacket will not remain a scholarship jacket if one has to pay for it even a single dollar. I once again thank everyone for making my stay in this school a memorable one. I wish all my classmates a successful future.
