Usha Chaumer is 42 years old. She proudly said, “In one birth, I have led two lives.” She got Padma Shri in 2020. Her determination to change society was given recognition.
Usha Chaumer is a true superhero. She says, “I want to cleanse the society of the concept of untouchability.” The former manual scavenger has become a beacon of inspiration for thousands of women in India.
Usha started her work when she was 7. She was born in Deegh village in Bharatpur, Rajasthan. She and her clan were ‘untouchables’. She was introduced to manual scavenging by her mother.
The women in her family had been doing this job for generations. They had no way to come out of it. Some of them might have wanted to be free from such wok. But the rural Indian society reminded them of their ‘position’ in the social hierarchy.
Usha remembers her mother getting up very early in the morning. She would then take her basket, bucket and broom and went to clean the village toilets.
By the age of 11, Usha was working with her mother. It was an age when children went to school. Usha was married off as a child when she was 10.
She was sent to her husband’s home when she was 14. Her husband was a sanitation worker with the municipality. Usha continued to do scavenging with her mother-in-law.
For cleaning the dirt of others Usha earned just 10 to 20 rupees per day. They mostly ate the leftover food given to them at the houses they scavenged. They did not earn enough money to buy clothes. They wore the worn-out clothes they collected at the houses.
The Sulabh International set up an NGO (Non Governmental Organization) called “Disha”. It gave training to women like Usha in various skills. Soon they were engaged in such works as stitching bags, making lamps and preparing jam, pickles and papad. The NGO took Usha and some other women to visit Delhi.
Usha remembered the visit with joy: “It was the first time I went out of my village. We were joyful to travel like any other citizen, stay in hotels and eat fancy food.” On her return from Delhi, Usha persuaded other women, including her mother-in-law, to give up manual scavenging. She soon realised if one woman left the job, another would immediately take it up. The main cause was the lack of sanitation in the village. The primitive toilets in homes needed manual scavenging. But when Sulabh International began to construct toilets in the villages, that too changed. There was no need for manual scavenging.
Usha was soon appointed as the president of the training centre. Now she has 100s of women under her guidance. She visited the USA and many countries in Europe and Africa as part of the Sulabh team. She spoke about her experiences at the gatherings. She was several times received by the Prime Minister of India as a distinguished guest. She received the Padma Shri.
Usha’s inspiring life has made 100s of women give up manual scavenging. She says, “I want to eradicate manual scavenging. Women are not meant for staying at home, cleaning dirt and taking care of children. I want every woman to be independent through dignified jobs. That is how we will build a better society, free of untouchability.”

ഉഷ ചൗമർ 42 വയസ്സുള്ള ഒരു സ്ത്രീയാണ്. അവർ ഒരിക്കൽ അഭിമാനത്തോടെ പറഞ്ഞു. “ഒരു ജീവിത ത്തിൽ തന്നെ ഞാൻ രണ്ടു ജീവിതം ജീവിച്ചു. അവർക്ക് 2020-ൽ പത്മശ്രീ ലഭിച്ചു. സമൂഹത്തെ മാറ്റാ നുള്ള അവരുടെ തീരുമാനത്തെ ജനം അംഗീകരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.
ഉഷ ചൗമർ ശരിക്കും ഒരു സൂപ്പർ ഹീറോയാ ണ്. അവർ പറയുന്നു. “തൊട്ടുകൂടായ്മയിൽ നിന്നും ഈ സമൂഹത്തെ എനിക്ക് വൃത്തി യാക്കണം.” ഒരു തോട്ടിപ്പണിക്കാരിയിൽ നിന്നും അവർ ഇപ്പോൾ ഇൻഡ്യയിലെ ആയി രക്കണക്കിനു സ്ത്രീകൾക്ക് ഒരു പ്രചോദന മായി മാറിയിരിക്കുകയാണ്.

തലമുറകളായി അവരുടെ കുടുംബത്തിലെ സ്ത്രീകൾ ചെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന പണിയാണിത്. ചിലരെങ്കിലും ആ ജോലിയിൽ നിന്നും മുക്തി വേണമെന്ന് ആശിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടാകും. പക്ഷേ ഇൻഡ്യയിലെ ഗ്രാമീണ സമൂഹം എപ്പോഴും അവരുടെ സമൂഹത്തിലെ നിലയെപ്പറ്റി ഓർമ്മിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.
അതിരാവിലെ തന്റെ അമ്മ എഴുന്നേൽക്കുന്ന കാര്യം ഉഷ ഓർക്കുന്നു. ഉണർന്നാൽ ഉടനേ അമ്മ കുട്ടയും, ബക്കറ്റും, ചൂലുകളും എടുത്തുകൊണ്ട് ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ കക്കൂസുകൾ വൃത്തിയാക്കാനായി പോകുമായിരുന്നു.
11 വയസ്സായപ്പോഴേക്കും ഉഷ അവളുടെ അമ്മയുടെ കൂടെ ജോലിക്കു പോയി തുടങ്ങി. കുട്ടികൾ സ്കൂളിൽ പോകുന്ന പ്രായമായിരുന്നു അത്. ഉഷക്ക് 10 വയസ്സുള്ളപ്പോൾ അവളെ വിവാഹം കഴിപ്പിച്ചു.
ഉഷക്ക് 14 വയസ്സായപ്പോൾ അവളെ ഭർത്താവിന്റെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു വിട്ടു. അവളുടെ ഭർത്താവ് മുനിസിപ്പാലി റ്റിയിലെ ഒരു ശുചീകരണ തൊഴിലാളിയായിരുന്നു. ഉഷ അവളുടെ അമ്മായിയമ്മയുടെ കൂടെ തോട്ടിപ്പണി തുടർന്നു.
മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ അഴുക്കുകൾ ക്ലീൻ ചെയ്താൽ ഉഷക്ക് ഒരു ദിവസം പത്തോ ഇരുപതോ രൂപയാണ് കിട്ടുക. അവർ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്ന വീടുകളിൽ ബാക്കിവരുന്ന ഭക്ഷണം കഴിച്ചാണ് അവർ ജീവിച്ചത്. പുതിയ വസ്ത്രങ്ങൾ വാങ്ങാൻ അവർക്ക് പണമില്ലായിരുന്നു. ക്ലീൻ ചെയ്യുന്ന വീട്ടുകാരുടെ പഴയ വസ്ത്രങ്ങ ളാണ് അവർക്ക് ധരിക്കാൻ കിട്ടിയിരുന്നത്.
“സുലഭ ഇന്റർനാഷണൽ” “ദിശ” എന്ന പേരുള്ള ഒരു NGO സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. ഉഷയെപ്പോലുള്ള സ്ത്രീകൾക്ക് ഈ സംഘടന വിവിധ തൊഴിലുകളിൽ പരിശീലനം നൽകി. ബാഗുകൾ തയ്ക്കുക, വിളക്കുകൾ ഉണ്ടാ ക്കുക, ജാം, അച്ചാറുകൾ, പപ്പടം എന്നിവ ഉണ്ടാക്കുക മുതലായ ജോലികളിൽ അവർ ഏർപ്പെടാൻ തുട ങ്ങി. ആ NGO ഉഷയേയും മറ്റു ചില സ്ത്രീകളേയും ഡൽഹി സന്ദർശിക്കാൻ കൊണ്ടുപോയി.
