(In this story, we read about a little raccoon named Chester, who is hesitant about going to school, and then what happens to him.)
Chester Racoon stood at the edge of the forest and cried. He told his mother that he did not want to go to school. He wanted to stay home with his mother and play with his friends and his toys. He also wanted to read his books. He wanted to swing. He requested his mother to allow him to stay at home. His mother, Ms Racoon, took him by the hand and nuzzled his ear.
His mother told him sometimes we have to do things we don’t want to do. They may look unusual and scary at first. Once you go to school you will love it. You will get new friends and new toys. You can read new books and swing on new swings. She added that she knew a secret that will make his nights as warm and cosy as his days at home.
Chester stopped crying and looked interested. He wanted to know what the secret was. His mother said it was an old secret which she learned from her mother and her mother had learned it from the grandmother. It is called ‘Kissing Hand’. Chester wanted to know what it was and mother told him she would show him.
Ms Raccoon took Chester’s left hand and spread his tiny fingers into a fan. Then she kissed Chester right in the middle of his palm. Chester felt the kiss rush from his hand, up his arm, into his heart. Ms Raccoon smiled. She told Chester that whenever he felt lonely and needed some love from home, he should press his hand to his cheek and think that his mummy loved him. And then the kiss would jump to his face and fill him with warm thoughts. She took Chester’s hand and carefully wrapped his fingers around the kiss.
She asked him not to lose the kiss. Even when he opened his hand to wash after eating, the kiss would stick there. Chester loved his Kissing Hand. He knew his mother’s love would go with him wherever he went. That night he stood in front of the school and looked thoughtful. Suddenly he turned to his mother and asked her to show him her hand. He then took his mother’s hand in his own and unfolded her large, familiar fingers into a fan. He then kissed the centre of her hand. He told her she too had a kissing hand and he loved her. Then he turned and danced away.
Ms Raccoon watched Chester run across a tree limb and enter the school. As the first bell of the new school year rang, she pressed her left hand to her cheek and smiled. The warmth of Chester’s kiss filled her heart with special words which sang to her that he loved her.

അവന്റെ അമ്മ അവനോടു പറഞ്ഞു. ചിലപ്പോൾ നമുക്ക് ഇഷ്ടമില്ലാത്തതുപോലും നമുക്ക് ചെയ്യേണ്ടി വരുമെ ന്ന്. ആദ്യമൊക്കെ അവയെല്ലാം അസാധാരണമായതും പേടിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നവയായും തോന്നാം.
ഒരിക്കൽ നീ സ്കൂളിൽ പോയാൽ പിന്നെ നിനക്ക് ഇഷ്ടമാകും. നിനക്ക് പുതിയ പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ വായിക്കാൻ കിട്ടും. പുതിയ ഊഞ്ഞാ ലുകളിൽ ആടാൻ പറ്റും. അവർ വേറൊന്നുകൂടി കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്തു. അവരുടെ കയ്യിൽ ഒരു രഹസ്യമുണ്ട്. അത് അവന് രാത്രിക ളിൽ ചൂടുപകരും, വീട്ടിലെന്നതുപോലെ തന്നെ.
ചെസ്റ്റർ കരച്ചിൽ നിർത്തി. അവന് സ്കൂളിൽ പോകാൻ താൽപ ര്യമായെന്നു തോന്നി. അവനറിയണം ആ രഹസ്യം എന്താണെന്ന്. അവന്റെ അമ്മ പറഞ്ഞു, അവരുടെ അമ്മയിൽ നിന്നും പഠിച്ച രഹസ്യമാണതെന്ന്. അവരുടെ അമ്മ, സ്വന്തം അമ്മയിൽ നിന്നു മാണ് അത് പഠിച്ചത്. ആ രഹസ്യത്തിന്റെ പേര് കിസിംഗ് ഹാന്റ് എന്നാണ്. ചെസ്റ്ററിന് വേഗം അറിയണം ആ രഹസ്യം എന്താണെന്ന്. അമ്മ പറഞ്ഞു. അവർ ഉടനേതന്നെ അവനെ കാണിച്ചുകൊടുക്കാമെന്ന്.
