Subject: Moyna, the Character in “The Why-Why Girl”
Dear Kumkum,
I am writing this email to tell you about Moyna the lively and intensely curious young protagonist of Mahasweta Devi’s story “The Why-Why Girl.” Moyna is a small Adivasi girl whose circumstances are quite challenging: she has to work as a servant for a middle-class family and can’t attend school regularly.

Despite her difficult life, Moyna possesses an extraordinary thirst for knowledge. Her most defining characteristic is her habit of constantly asking “Why?” This is not just playful questioning; it shows her deep intelligence and her intense desire to understand the world around her, from the functioning of a clock to the reasons behind social inequalities. She is persistent and refuses to be satisfied with simple or dismissive answers.

Moyna is also a brave and determined girl. She doesn’t let her poverty or her lack of formal education limit her curiosity. Her endless questions represent her hope and her active effort to break the cycle of poverty through learning. She ultimately teaches the older woman she works for the importance of continuous curiosity and the potential that lies within every eager mind. I felt Moyna is a good model for small girls to emulate.

See you during the long vacation.
Yours lovingly, (Lilly)

Kerala Syllabus Class 6 English Model Question Paper Set 3 - 4
Answer:
I : Hello, Ms. Vyarawalla! Thank you for letting me chat with you.

Homai: Homai Vyarawalla: Namaste! It’s lovely to meet you. Please, call me Homai.

I : That’s kind of you! I read you were India’s first female photojoumalist. What was it like being the only woman doing that job for so long?

Homai : Oh, it was very different! When I started in the 1940s, people were often
surprised to see a woman with a big camera. It meant I had to work extra hard to be taken seriously. But I had a simple rule: “Get there early, and take the best pictures.”

I : Your pictures of Indian Independence must be the most famous. What moment stands out the most important in your memory?

Homai : That’s right. The most important moment was on August 15. 1947. when India became independent. I was there when the national flag was hoisted for the first time at the Red Fort. It was a powerful, emotional moment for everyone. Capturing the faces of our leaders, like Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi, was a big honour.

I : You took so many photos of important people! Which one of them was the most interesting subject for your camera?

Homai : That would have to be Nehru, our first Prime Minister. He had a great presence and was always so natural in front of the camera—very dynamic! He never seemed to mind being photographed.

I : Thank you so much, Homai! Your life is really inspiring. It teaches us that girls can do any job they set their minds to!

Live Report – Attempt any one of the two activities given below. (5)
(A). In “Six Dots” by Jen Bryant, we see how the blind boy was trained to read and write dot patterns by Dr. Pigmier, the Headmaster of the Royal School for the Blind in Paris. Prepare a report, using the following hints.

(Hints: Louis completely blind by 5 – When 10, he goes to the Royal School for the Blind, Paris – learns to read with 12 dots – thinks of making his own version – works hard for years – 6 dots – the blind can now read and write like normal people using the Braille system.)
Kerala Syllabus Class 6 English Model Question Paper Set 3 - 5
Answer:
Louis Braille, the blind boy in the story, lost his eyesight after an accident when he was very young. By the time he was 5, he became completely blind. When he was 10, he attended the Royal School for the Blind in Paris. At that time blind students had to read using large, raised letters that were very hard to feel and took a long time to read. It was almost impossible for them to write!

The Headmaster, Dr. Pigmier, told the blind students that a French army captain had invented a code to send secret messages during war. This code is read by touch. He gave them a message written with patterns of dots. He explained to them how to read it. The message contained 12 dots.

Louis spent years working on his own version, making it simpler and faster. He finally created a system that used only six dots in different patterns. This allowed blind people to easily read and, for the first time, write down their own thoughts using a simple tool. It was a revolutionary invention that changed the lives of millions. Louis Braille’s system is used all over the world today.

(B). You studied the poem “The Heart of a Woman” by Georgia Douglas Johnson. Make a report about the ideas in the poem and your thoughts about it. You may use the following hints.
(Hints: The heart like a bird – roams – ups and downs of life – sacrifices for family – at night the heart enters an alien cage – forgets dreams – societal restrictions.)
Kerala Syllabus Class 6 English Model Question Paper Set 3 - 6
Answer:
The heart of a woman goes forth with the dawn, as a free bird flying alone softly and restlessly. Just like the bird roams far away over the hills and valleys, the woman’s heart passes through the ups and downs of life. She has her joys and sorrows. She works hard for the welfare and happiness of her husband, children, and others in the home. She is busy as a bee to ensure that all the people at home are comfortable.

At night the heart of a woman comes back and enters some alien cage. It tries to forget its dreams of the stars as it breaks on the sheltering bars. The sheltering bars are the societal restrictions on a woman. Society tells women what they should do and what they should not do. This is more so in patriarchal societies like India where women face a lot of restrictions. It is high time we gave women equality with men in all spheres of life so that they can live the kind of life they want.

(Hints: lion sleeping – rat climbs over him – lion angry – wants to kill the rat – rat cries and apologizes – freed – lion caught in net – rat sees lion in trouble – cuts net – saves lion – lion grateful – No creature is too small to help
Answer:

“Even the Smallest Can Save the Strongest”

Once upon a time a lion was sleeping under a tree. Thinking that it was a dead lion, a rat jumped on it. The lion got up and caught the rat and he was going to kill it. The rat then begged the lion not to kill it as it made a mistake by jumping on it. It promised to’repay the help someday. The lion laughed as he did not know how a small creature like a rat could help him. Somehow the lion let the rat go away with a strong warning not to repeat such mistakes again.

After a few days the lion was caught in a net laid by a hunter. He was sure he would be killed by the hunter. At this time the rat that he had let free earlier saw the lion in the net. The rat came and cut the net with its sharp teeth and released the lion. The lion was thankful to the rat for saving his life. The story teaches that no creature is too small to help.
