Question 1.
(a) Write \(\\frac{3}{6}\) as an equivalent fraction.

(b) If a circle is divided into 10 parts and 4 are shaded, how many more parts need to be shaded to make it \(\frac{3}{5}\) of the circle?

(c) Simplify \(\frac{8}{12}\) to its lowest terms.

(a) Which is the fiftieth odd number?
Answer:
The fiftieth odd number can be found by multiplying 50 by 2 and then subtracting 1, SO”1 odd number
= (50 × 2) – 1 = 100 – 1 = 99

(b) What is the sum of the odd numbers from 1 to this number?
Answer:
The sum of odd numbers from 1 to 99
= 50 × 50 = 2500

(c) Rewrite each of the products below as the product of a number by itself:
(i) 9 × 16
(ii) 16 × 36
(iii) 36 × 49
(iv) 49 × 64
(v) 81 × 25

(ii) 16 × 36 = (4 × 6)(4 × 6)
(iii) 36 × 49 = (6 × 7)(6 × 7)

A. (a) The school store needs 1825 notebooks. How many packs of 25 notebooks are to be bought?

(b) What are the numbers which leave remainder 0 on division by 2 ? And those that leave remainder 1 ?
Answer:
2 = (2 × 1) + 0
4 = (2 × 2) + 0
6 = (2 × 3) + 0
8 = (2 × 4) + 0
Thus, the numbers are 2, 4, 6, 8,10 ….
That is, the multiple of 2 which leave remainder 0 on division by 2.
3 = (2 × 1)+ 1
5 = (2 × 2) + 1
7 = (2 × 3) + 1
9 = (2 × 4) + 1
Thus, the numbers are 3, 5, 7, 9………….

(c) Which of the following statements are true about division?
i. Division is the process of repeated addition.
ii. Any number can be expressed as (Divisor × Quotient) + Remainder.
iii. The remainder is always smaller than the divisor.
iv. If the remainder is 0, the number is exactly divisible.

(a) A train scheduled to leave at 20:50 is delayed by 35 minutes. At what time does it leave? Write the answer in both 24-hour and AM/PM formats.

Scheduled time: 20 : 50 + 35 minutes = 21 : 25
AM/PM format: 9 : 25 PM.

(b) If a train journey starts at 19:25 and ends at 03:40 the next day, calculate the total duration of the journey.

Total journey time:
03:40 (next day) – 19: 25 (previous day) = 8 hours and 15 minutes.

(c) If a person cycles 3.5 kilometers in 30 minutes, what is their speed in kilometers per hour?
Answer:
Speed: Distance = 3.5 km, Time = 0.5 hours.
Speed = \(\frac{3.5}{0.5}\) = 7 km/h.
