The light was weak, even at noon. When Pelayo was coming to the house, it was hard for him to see what was moving and groaning at the back of the courtyard. He went close. It was an old man lying face down in the mud. The man was trying to get up, but he could not, as he was impeded by his huge wings. Pelayo was afraid. He went to get help from his wife Elisenda. She was putting pads on their sick child.
Pelayo took her near the courtyard and they looked at the man. He was dressed like a rag-picker. He was bald except for a little hair here and here. He had very few teeth. He looked like a drenched great grandfather. His huge wings were dirty and half plucked and were entangled in the mud.
They looked at him long and closely. Soon they overcame their surprise. They started to speak with him. He spoke in a dialect incomprehensible to them. He had a sailor’s voice. They thought he was a castaway from a foreign ship wrecked by the storm. Soon they called a neighbour, a woman, who said, “He must have been coming for the child. He is so old that the rain knocked him down.”
On the following day everyone knew a flesh-and-blood angel was held prisoner in Pelayo’s house. Pelayo watched him from the kitchen, armed with his club. Before going to bed he dragged him out of the mud and locked him up with the hens in the chicken coop. After some time the child woke up. Now he had no fever and he wanted to eat. Pelayo and Elisenda were happy. They put the angel on a raft with fresh water and food for 3 days and left him to his fate on the sea.
But when they went into the courtyard the following morning, they saw the whole neighbourhood in front of the chicken coop. The people were having fun with the angel. They were giving him things to eat. It was as if he was not an angel but a circus animal.
The news of the angel spread with great speed. Soon the courtyard became like a marketplace. The couple had to call the troops to send away the mob. They decided to fence the yard. They would charge 5 cents for admission to see the angel. People came even from faraway places. Invalids came looking for health. Pelayo and Elisenda were happy. In less than a week, their rooms were filled with money. The visitors were still coming.
The angel spent his time making himself comfortable in his nest. They tried to give him different foods, but he liked only eggplant mush. His only supernatural virtue was patience. The hens pecked at him, looking for parasites in his wing. Some cripples pulled out his feathers to touch their limbs with. Some even threw stones at him. He thought they all were trying to make him stand. Soon a travelling show came to town. The main attraction was a woman who had been changed into a spider by a burst of thunder and lightning. The admission fee to see her was less than the fee to see the angel. So, people flocked to see her. They were also allowed to ask her questions about her condition.
With the money they got, Pelayo and Elisenda built a 2-storey mansion with balconies and gardens. It also had high netting so that crabs would not enter during the winter, and iron bars on the windows so that angels would not get in. Pelayo also set up a rabbit warren. He gave up his job as a bailiff. Elisenda bought some satin shoes with high heels and many dresses of fine silk. The got no attention. Then they found he had fever at night. They were alarmed. They thought he was going to die. But he survived and when the sunny days came he improved. He remained motionless for several days in a corner of the courtyard. At the beginning of December, some large stiff feathers began to grow on his wings. They looked like the feathers of a scarecrow.
One morning Elisenda was cutting some onion for lunch. A wind blew into the kitchen. Then she saw the angel trying to fly. It was as if he would knock down the shed as he could not get a grip on the air. But then he managed to gain altitude.
Elisenda let out a sigh of relief as he saw him flying away. He was managing to fly like an old vulture. She kept watching as she cut her onions. Then she could not see him. He was no longer an annoyance in her life but an imaginary dot on the horizon of the sea.
