She has a bad reputation and he hates her so much that he does not leave his door open if he knows that she is in her apartment.
Despite her rough exterior, the core of Teresa’s being is characterized by intense isolation and a yearning for affection. She is a migrant, living alone in the industrialized city. To fight her deep loneliness, she has invented an imaginary lover named Boles. She asks the student to write letters to Boles and then, later, letters from Boles to herself, creating a fiction of love.
When approaching the student for help, her behaviour changes dramatically. She becomes confused and her voice is beseeching, soft and timid. The content of her dictated letters- referring to herself as Boles’ “sorrowing little dove, Teresa”-is sentimental and tender, highlighting the soft heart hidden beneath her tough exterior.
When the student questions the existence of Boles she is offended. The imaginary lover is her lifeline, an emotional fulfilment which the world does not give her.
She is grateful Mr. Student. In return for his services of writing letters, she repairs the holes in the socks, shirts and other items of clothing. In short she is a woman in need of love and affection and she tries to get them through her invented lover, Boles.

It is a real shock. I have been a fool in misjudging and mistreating poor Teresa. I was prejudiced against her because of her appearance and bad reputation. I was so prejudiced against her that I never left my door open when I knew she was in her apartment.
But now my eyes are open. When she asked my help to write a letter to her lover Boles I did that. But then she comes asking me to write a reply from Boles. That really irritated me and I called her a liar. She was sad and went back to her room. I felt sad too that I made her unhappy. So I went to her. Then she explained to me why she wrote to Boles. She was lonely. There was nobody to give her affection and love. So she invented this imaginary lover. When someone read the letters she wrote to Boles and the letters he wrote to her, she felt Boles was real. Someone was there to love her! This feeling gave her happiness and contentment. I did not know that there are such people like her in this world who long for love and affection. Anyway, I thank God have I have realised the truth. I will be more sensible in future. I will not be prejudiced and judgmental without knowing the actual facts about people.
