In the city of Palermo, Italy, there lived a poor farmer and his young daughter Carla. He cultivated grains and fresh vegetables. He sold them at a nearby market. Carla helped him by watering the plants and collecting the grains.
Scene 1: One day the farmer loaded his wagon with grains and hitched up his horse and asked his daughter Carla to wish him luck so that when he returns home in the evening his pockets will be filled with money. Carla wished him luck. She told him before he came back, she would collect the rest of the grains.
Scene 2: The farmer settles in the street to sell his grains. A merchant comes to buy the grains. Seeing the fine grains, the merchant asks the price for “everything”. The farmer fell for his trick and said twenty copper pieces for everything. The deal is done. Then the merchant asks the farmer to give everything, including the wagon and the horse. The farmer refuses to give away his wagon and horse. But the rule said that once a deal is made it is binding on both parties. If there is a disagreement, one has to appear before the judge.
Scene 3: The merchant and farmer go before the judge and the merchant wins. He takes away all the grains along with his wagon and horse. The farmer goes back home disappointed. He explains things to Carla. Carla thinks of an idea to find the merchant and teach him a lesson.
Scene 4: The next day Carla selected a basket full of the best, ripe watermelons that the farmer had ever grown. She went to the market to sell them. She knew it would attract the wicked merchant. As expected he came near her stall and tried to make the same deal but this time Carla outsmarted him. When the merchant tried to buy everything from her, the price she charged in return was everything the merchant had in his hand. A deal was made. The merchant not realising that she would also ask the three rings that he wore on his fingers. When the merchant reluctantly gives the rings to Carla she returns them to him saying that her father did not teach her to cheat or harm anybody.

ഇറ്റലിയിലെ പലർമോ നഗരത്തിൽ ഒരു പാവ പ്പെട്ട കർഷകനും അയാളുടെ മകളായ കാർലയും താമസിച്ചിരുന്നു. അയാൾ ധാന്യ ങ്ങളും പച്ചക്കറികളുമാണ് കൃഷി ചെയ്തിരുന്ന ത്., അവയെല്ലാം അടുത്തുള്ള ഒരു മാർക്കറ്റിൽ അയാൾ വിറ്റിരുന്നു. ചെടികൾക്ക് വെള്ളമൊ ഴിച്ചും ധാന്യങ്ങൾ ശേഖരിച്ചും കാർല പിതാ വിനെ സഹായിക്കുമായിരുന്നു.
സീൻ 1 : ഒരിക്കൽ ആ കർഷകൻ തന്റെ വണ്ടി യിൽ ധാന്യങ്ങൾ കയറ്റി കുതിരയെ വണ്ടിയിൽ കെട്ടി. താൻ തിരിച്ചു വരുമ്പോൾ കീശ നിറയെ കാശുണ്ടാകണെന്ന് ആശംസിക്കാൻ അയാൾ കാർലയോട് പറഞ്ഞു. കാർല അങ്ങനെ ആശം സിച്ചു. അവൾ പറഞ്ഞു അദ്ദേഹം തിരിച്ചു വരു ന്നതിന് മുൻപ് ബാക്കി ധാന്യങ്ങൾ ഒക്കെ അവൾ ശേഖരിച്ചു വക്കാമെന്ന്.
സീൻ 2 : കർഷകൻ റോഡിന്റെ സൈഡിൽ ഇരുന്ന് ധാന്യങ്ങൾ വിൽക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നു. ഒരു കച്ചവടക്കാരൻ ധാന്യം വാങ്ങാൻ വരുന്നു. നല്ല ധാന്യമാണ് കച്ചവടക്കാരൻ ചോദിക്കുന്നു. “എല്ലാത്തിനും കൂടി എത്ര പണം വേണമെന്ന്. കർഷകൻ എല്ലാത്തിനും കൂടി എന്ന വാക്കിലെ ചതി മനസ്സിലാക്കാതെ 20 ചെമ്പുനാണയങ്ങൾ വേണമെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു. കച്ചവടക്കാരൻ സമ്മ തിച്ചു. അതൊരു ഡീൽ ആയി .20 ചെമ്പ് നാണ യങ്ങൾ കൊടുത്തിട്ട് കച്ചവടക്കാരൻ പറയുന്നു, അയാൾ എല്ലാത്തിനും കൂടിയാണ് വില പറഞ്ഞ ത്. അതുകൊണ്ട് വണ്ടിയും കുതിരയും അതിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുമെന്ന്. കർഷകൻ വണ്ടിയും കുതിരയും കൊടുക്കുവാൻ മടിക്കുന്നു. പക്ഷേ അവിടത്തെ നിയമം അനുസരിച്ച് ഒരു ഡീൽ നടന്നുകഴി ഞ്ഞാൽ ഇരുകൂട്ടരും ആ ഡീൽ അനുസരിക്കാൻ ബാദ്ധ്യസ്ഥരാണ്. ആർക്കെങ്കിലും എതിരഭിപ്രാ യമുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ ജഡ്ജിയാണ് തീരുമാനം എടുക്കേ ണ്ടത്.
സീൻ -3 : കച്ചവടക്കാരനും കർഷകനും ജഡ്ജി യുടെ അടുത്തുപോകുന്നു. കച്ചവടക്കാരൻ വിജ യിക്കുന്നു. അയാൾ വണ്ടിയും അതിലെ ധാന്യവും കുതിരയുമായി പോകുന്നു. വളരെ വിഷമത്തോടും നിരാശയോടും കൂടിയാണ് കർഷ കൻ വീട്ടിലെത്തുന്നത്. അയാൾ കാർലയോട് നടന്ന കാര്യങ്ങൾ വിവരിക്കുന്നു. കാർല വളരെ നേരം ചിന്തിച്ച് ആ കച്ചവടക്കാരനെ ഒരു പാഠം പഠിപ്പിക്കാൻ തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നു.
സീൻ -4: പിറ്റേ ദിവസം കാർല ഏറ്റവും നല്ല തണ്ണിമത്തങ്ങ ഒരു കുട്ട നിറച്ച് പറിച്ചെടുക്കുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് അത് വിൽക്കാനായി അവൾ മാർക്കറ്റിൽ ചെല്ലുന്നു. ആ കള്ളക്കച്ചവടക്കാരൻ ഇത്രയും നല്ല തണ്ണിമത്തങ്ങ കണ്ട്, അതിൽ ആകൃഷ്ടനായി തന്റെ അടുക്കൽ വരും എന്ന് കാർലക്ക് അറിയാമായിരുന്നു. വിചാരിച്ച പോലെതന്നെ അയാൾ വന്ന് ഒരു ഡീലിന് ശ്രമി ച്ചു. പക്ഷേ ഇത്തവണ കാർല അവനെ തോൽപ്പി ച്ചു. എല്ലാത്തിനും കൂടി എന്താണ് വില എന്ന് അയാൾ ചോദിച്ചപ്പോൾ, “തന്റെ കയ്യി ലുള്ളതെല്ലാം” എന്നായിരുന്നു കാർലയുടെ മറു പടി. അയാൾ ഡീലിന് സമ്മതിച്ചു. കച്ചവടക്കാ രന് അറിയില്ലായിരുന്നു തന്റെ വിരലുകളിൽ ധരി ച്ചിരുന്ന മൂന്ന് മോതിരങ്ങളും കൂടി കാർല ചോദി ക്കുമെന്ന്. പക്ഷേ ഡീലിൽ നിന്നും പിൻമാറാൻ പറ്റുകയില്ലല്ലോ! അതുകൊണ്ട് മനസ്സില്ലാ മന സ്സോടെ, വിഷമത്തോടെ അയാൾ ആ മൂന്നു മോതിരങ്ങളും ഊരി അവൾക്ക് കൊടുത്തു. കാർല ആ മോതിരങ്ങൾ അയാൾക്ക് തിരിച്ചു കൊടുത്തുകൊണ്ടു പറഞ്ഞു. എന്റെ പിതാവ് മറ്റു ള്ളവരെ ചതിക്കാനും ഉപദ്രവിക്കാനും എന്നെ പഠിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടില്ല എന്ന്.
