I walked with my father holding his right hand. I had to run to keep pace with him. I wore new clothes, black shoes, green school uniform and the red cap. My happiness was mixed as I had to go to school for the first time. My mother stood at the door watching us. I often looked her as I wanted her not to send me to school. We walked along a street lined with gardens. There were big fields on both sides. I requested my father not to send me to school as I would do nothing to annoy him. He told me that he was not punishing me. He said that the school was a factory which made children useful people and made them grow up.
I was not happy with his answer. I thought there was no need to remove me from the comfort of the home and put me in the school which looked like a high- walled fortress. When we came to the gate we saw the courtyard. It was full of boys and girls. My father asked me to go in and join them. He wanted me to smile and be a good example to others. I did not want to leave his hand. So he gently pushed me away. He asked me to be bold. He said my life would start that day and he would wait for me when it is time to go home.
I soon saw some boys and girls. I did not know anyone of them. None knew me also. I felt like a person who had lost his way. A boy came and asked me who brought me there. I told him my father brought me. He said he had ho father as he had died. I did not know what to say to that boy. When the gate was closed some children cried. A bell rang. A lady came and then came some men. The men separated us into different groups. The lady told that this was our new home. There were mothers and fathers there. There was everything there to enjoy and useful to get knowledge and life. So we should diy our tears and look happy.
We had no choice but to accept the facts. This acceptance brought us contentment. People are drawn to other people. I made friends with some boys and fell in love with some girls. Soon I realized that my misunderstandings about the school were baseless. I never thought the school would have such a rich variety. There were different games, swings, the vaulting horse and ball games. In the music room we sang songs. We learned language. We saw the globe. We learned the numbers. We ate tasty food, took little nap, and made friendships. We played and learned.
After shaking my hand a second time, he left. I took a few more steps. I realised I had lost my way. I saw a lot of vehicles and people. I saw a truck carrying soldiers. I heard the siren of a fire engine. I saw a fight between a taxi driver and his passenger. The passenger’s wife was crying for help but nobody came. I was going crazy. How things changed in half a day, between early morning and sunset?
My father might give me an answer. But where was my home? I could see only tall buildings and crowds of people.
I knew I had to cross Abu Khoda to reach home. But I could not get across the road because of the heavy traffic. The fire engine’s siren was shrieking, but it was moving at a slow pace. I am sure that the fire will have consumed everything before the fire engine reaches its destination. I was wondering when I could cross the road. Then a boy came to me and said to me, “Grandpa, let me take you across.”

ഞാൻ എന്റെ പിതാവിന്റെ വലതുകൈ പിടിച്ച് നടന്നു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിനൊപ്പം നടക്കാൻ എനിക്ക് ഓടേണ്ടി വന്നു. പുതിയ ഉടുപ്പും കറുത്ത ഷൂകളും പച്ചനിറമുള്ള സ്കൂൾ യൂണി ഫോമും ചുവന്ന തൊപ്പിയുമാണ് ഞാൻ ധരിച്ചിരുന്നത്. എന്നിട്ടും എന്റെ സന്തോഷം പൂർണ്ണ മായിരുന്നില്ല. കാരണം ആദ്യമായി എന്നെ സ്കൂളിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോകുകയാണ്. വാതിൽക്കൽ നിന്നുകൊണ്ട് എന്റെ അമ്മ ഞങ്ങളെ നോക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. പല പ്രാവശ്യം ഞാൻ അമ്മയെ തിരി ഞ്ഞുനോക്കി. എന്നെ സ്കൂളിൽ വിടല്ലേ എന്ന അഭ്യർത്ഥനയായിരുന്നു ആ നോട്ടങ്ങളിൽ ഒക്കെ. പിതാവും ഞാനും നടന്നുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന വഴിയുടെ രണ്ട് സൈഡിലും പൂന്തോട്ടങ്ങളാ യിരുന്നു. അവയുടെ പുറകിൽ നീണ്ട് പരന്നു കിടക്കുന്ന കൃഷിയിടങ്ങളും. ഞാൻ പിതാവി നോട് പറഞ്ഞു, എന്നെ സ്കൂളിൽ കൊണ്ടു പോകല്ലേ. അങ്ങയെ വിഷമിപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഒന്നും തന്നെ ഞാൻ വീട്ടിൽ ഇരുന്ന് ചെയ്യുകയില്ലെന്ന്. മറുപടിയായി അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞതിങ്ങനെയാണ്. സ്കൂളിൽ വിടുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് എന്നെ ശിക്ഷിക്കുകയല്ല. സ്കൂൾ ഒരു ഫാക്ടറിയാണെന്നും കുട്ടികളെ നല്ലവരായി രൂപപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതും അവരെ വളർത്തുന്നതും സ്കൂൾ ആണെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്തു.
അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മറുപടിയിൽ ഞാൻ തൃപ്തനല്ലായിരുന്നു. വീടിന്റെ സംരക്ഷണത്തിൽ നിന്നും എന്നെ സ്കൂളിൽ വിടേണ്ട യാതൊരു കാരണവും ഞാൻ കണ്ടിരുന്നില്ല. സ്കൂൾ ഒരു വലിയ കോട്ടയായിട്ടാണ് എനിക്ക് തോന്നിയത്. സ്കൂളിന്റെ ഗേയ്റ്റിനടുത്തു എത്തിയപ്പോൾ ഞങ്ങൾ സ്കൂളിന്റെ മുറ്റം കണ്ടു. അവിടെ നിറയെ ആൺകുട്ടികളും പെൺകുട്ടികളും ഉണ്ടാ യിരുന്നു. എന്റെ പിതാവ് പറഞ്ഞു. അകത്തു പോയി അവരുടെ കൂടെ ചേരാൻ. എപ്പോഴും ചിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കണമെന്നും ഞാൻ മറ്റുള്ളവർക്ക് ഒരു നല്ല മാതൃകയായിരിക്കണമെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്തു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കൈവിടാൻ ഞാൻ തയ്യാറാല്ലായിരുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം എന്നെ ചെറുതായി ഉന്തി സ്കൂളിനകത്തേക്ക് വിട്ടു. അദ്ദേഹം എന്നോടു പറഞ്ഞു, ധൈര്യമായിട്ടിരിക്കാൻ; എന്റെ ജീവിതം അന്നാണ് തുടങ്ങുന്നതെന്നും ക്ലാസ്സ് കഴിയുമ്പോൾ വീട്ടിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോകാനായി അദ്ദേഹം തിരിച്ച് സ്കൂളിലേക്ക് വരുമെന്നും എന്നോട് പറഞ്ഞു.
ഞാൻ പെട്ടെന്നുതന്നെ കുറച്ച് ആൺകുട്ടികളേയും പെൺകുട്ടികളേയും കണ്ടു. അവരിൽ ആരെയും തന്നെ എനിക്ക് പരിചയമില്ലായിരുന്നു. ആർക്കും എന്നേയും അറിഞ്ഞുകൂടാ. വഴി തെറ്റി വന്ന ഒരു അപരിചിതന്റെ അവസ്ഥയില്ലായിരുന്നു ഞാൻ. അങ്ങനെ നിൽക്കുമ്പോൾ ഒരു ആൺകുട്ടി വന്ന് എന്നോടു ചോദിച്ചു, ആരാണ് നിന്നെ കൊണ്ടുവന്നത്. എന്റെ പിതാവാ ണെന്ന് ഞാൻ പറഞ്ഞു. അപ്പോൾ അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു. അവന് പിതാവില്ല, അദ്ദേഹം മരിച്ചുപോ യെന്ന്. ആ കുട്ടിയോട് എന്തു പറയണമെന്ന് എനിക്കറിയില്ലായിരുന്നു. സ്കൂളിന്റെ ഗേറ്റ് അടച്ച പ്പോൾ പല കുട്ടികളും കരയാൻ തുടങ്ങി. ഒരു മണി അടിച്ചു. അപ്പോൾ ഒരു സ്ത്രീയും കുറെ പുരുഷന്മാരും ഞങ്ങളുടെ അടുത്തേക്ക് വന്നു. ആ പുരുഷന്മാർ കുട്ടികളെ പല ഗ്രൂപ്പുക ളിലായി തരം തിരിച്ചു. ആ സ്ത്രീ പറഞ്ഞു ഇതാണ് നിങ്ങളുടെ പുതിയ വീടെന്ന്. ഇവിടെ അമ്മമാരും പിതാക്കന്മാരും ഉണ്ട്. സന്തോഷിക്കാനും അറിവിനും ജീവിതത്തിനും വേണ്ടി യുള്ള എല്ലാം ഇവിടെയുണ്ട്. അതുകൊണ്ട് ഞങ്ങൾ എല്ലാം കണ്ണീരൊക്കെ തുടച്ച് സന്തോഷ ത്തോട് ഇരിക്കണമെന്ന് അവർ പറഞ്ഞു.
ഞങ്ങൾക്ക് എല്ലാവർക്കും യാഥാർത്ഥ്യങ്ങളെ അംഗീകരിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നു. അത് ഞങ്ങൾക്ക് സംതൃപ്തി നൽകി. പരസ്പരം ആകർഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന സ്വാഭാവമാണ് മനുഷ്യന്റേത്. കുറച്ച് ആൺകുട്ടികളെ ഞാൻ കൂട്ടുകാരാക്കി. കുറച്ചു പെൺകുട്ടികളോട് എനിക്ക് ഇഷ്ടം തോന്നി. പെട്ടെന്ന് തന്നെ എനിക്ക് മനസ്സിലായി. സ്കൂളിനെ പറ്റിയുള്ള എന്റെ ചിന്തകൾ തെറ്റായിരുന്നു വെന്ന്. ഇത്രമാത്രം വൈവിധ്യങ്ങൾ സ്കൂളിൽ കാണുമെന്ന് ഒരിക്കലും ഞാൻ പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചിട്ടി ല്ലായിരുന്നു. അവിടെ ധാരാളം ഗെയ്മുകൾ, ഊഞ്ഞാലുകൾ, ചാഞ്ചാടുന്ന കുതിരകൾ, വിവി ധതരം പന്തുകളികൾ എന്നിവയൊക്കെ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. മ്യൂസിക്ക് റൂമിൽ ഞങ്ങൾ പാട്ടുകൾ പാടി. ഞങ്ങൾ ഭാഷ പഠിച്ചു. ഞങ്ങൾ ഒരു ഗ്ലോബ് കണ്ടു. എണ്ണാൻ പഠിച്ചു. ഞങ്ങൾ രുചി യുള്ള ഭക്ഷണം കഴിച്ചു, അല്പം ഉറങ്ങി, നല്ല കൂട്ടുകെട്ടുകൾ ഉണ്ടായി, അങ്ങനെ ഞങ്ങൾ കളിക്കുകയും പഠിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.

സ്കൂൾ അവസാനിക്കാനുള്ള മണി അടിച്ചു. കുട്ടികൾ എല്ലാവരും ഗേയ്റ്റിന്റെ അടു ത്തേക്ക് ഓടി. കൂട്ടുകാരോട് യാത്ര പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് ഞാനും ഗേറ്റിന്റെ പുറത്തേക്ക് വന്നു. എന്റെ പിതാവ് അവിടെയില്ലായിരുന്നു. കുറെനേരം ഞാനവിടെ നിന്നു. പിന്നെ നടക്കാൻ തുട ങ്ങി. അല്പം ദൂരം നടന്നപ്പോഴേക്കും ഞാൻ ഒരു പ്രായമായ, എനിക്കറിയാവുന്ന, ഒരാളെ കണ്ടു. ഞങ്ങൾ പരസ്പരം അഭിവാദ്യം ചെയ്ത് സംസാരിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി.
രണ്ടാം പ്രാവശ്യം എന്റെ കൈപിടിച്ചു കുലുക്കിക്കൊണ്ട് അദ്ദേഹം പോയി. ഞാൻ കുറ ച്ചുമുന്നോട്ടു നടന്നു. എനിക്കു മനസ്സിലായി എനിക്കു വഴി തെറ്റിയെന്ന്, ധാരാളം വണ്ടികളും ആൾക്കാരും അതിലേ പൊയ്ക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. പട്ടാളക്കാരെ വഹിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഒരു ട്രക്കും അതിലേ കടന്നുപോയി. ഞാൻ ഒരു ഫയർ എഞ്ചിന്റെ സൈറൺ കേട്ടു. ഒരു ടാക്സി ഡ്രൈവറും അയാളുടെ
യാത്രക്കാരനുമായി അടിപിടികൂടുന്നത് ഞാൻ കണ്ടു. ആ യാത്രക്കാരന്റെ ഭാര്യ പരിഭ്രാന്ത യായി സഹായത്തിനുവേണ്ടി ആൾക്കാരെ വിളിക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ ആരും സഹായ ത്തിനു വന്നില്ല. എനിക്ക് ഭ്രാന്തു പിടിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ തോന്നി. അരദിവസം കൊണ്ട് എന്തെല്ലാം മാറ്റങ്ങളാണ് സംഭവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്! എന്റെ പിതാവ് എനിക്ക് ഇതിന്റെ ഉത്തരം തരുമായിരി ക്കും. പക്ഷേ എവിടെയാണ് എന്റെ വീട്? എനിക്കവിടെ ഉയരമുള്ള കെട്ടിടങ്ങളും ആൾക്കൂട്ട ങ്ങളും മാത്രമേ കാണാൻ പറ്റിയുള്ളു.
എനിക്കറിയാം അബുഘോഡ എന്ന റോഡ് ക്രോസ് ചെയ്താലേ എനിക്ക് വീട്ടിലെ ത്താൻ പറ്റുകയുള്ളു എന്ന്. പക്ഷേ വണ്ടികൾ ചീറിപ്പായുന്നതു കാരണം എനിക്ക് റോഡ് കുറുകെ കടക്കാൻ പറ്റുന്നില്ല. ഫയർ എഞ്ചിന്റെ സൈറൻ ഇപ്പോഴും കേൾക്കാം. തിരക്കു കാരണം അതിന് സ്പീഡിൽ പോകാൻ പറ്റുന്നില്ല. ഫയർ എഞ്ചിൻ എത്തുമ്പോഴേക്കും കത്താ നുള്ളവയൊക്കെ കത്തി നശിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടാകും. ഞാൻ അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുകയാണ്. എനിക്ക് എപ്പോൾ റോഡ് ക്രോസ് ചെയ്യാൻ പറ്റുമെന്ന്. അപ്പോൾ ഒരു കുട്ടി എന്റെ അടുത്തേക്കു വന്നിട്ടു പറഞ്ഞു. “അപ്പൂപ്പാ, ഞാൻ നിങ്ങളെ റോഡിന്റെ അപ്പുറത്തേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോകാം.”

Naguib Mahfouz was born in Egypt in 1911. He is one of the most important writers of Arabic literature. He got the Nobel Prized in 1988. He has written 235 novels, 350 short stories and 26 screenplays. His most famous books are: “The Cairo Trilogy” and “Children of Gebelawi”. Many of his works have been made into films. He died in 2006.
