Answer:
I don’t justify her action. Just because her husband called her a dung picker’s daughter, she should not have burned the sari she was wearing. It could have killed her. It is true that Ajit is not a good man. He has no business to read letters addressed to Nomita and even keep some of them with him without telling her. Calling one’s wife such insulting terms does not befit the behaviour of a gentleman. All the same Nomita should exercise more restraint. Getting overexcited over small matters does not suit a good wife

We need it to drive a car, to enjoy a meal, to breathe, to create something new and to enjoy everyday activities. The brain regulates our body’s basic functions, enables us to interpret and respond to everything we experience, and shapes our behaviour.

In short, our brain is us everything we think arid feel, and who we are. The brain is often likened to an incredibly complex and intricate computer. It is made up of many parts with interconnected circuits that work together as a team. Drugs spoil the smooth working of the brain. Sometimes they give you a feeling Of pleasure for a brief period. Dear Sir,

DESTRUCTION OF ENVIRONMENT:

I am writing this letter to show my concern over the destruction of the environment that has been going on for long. We destroy the environment in so many ways and that is why we have disasters year after year. Adeluge ravaged our Stateln August 2018, in which over 470 people died and properties worth 40,000 crore were destroyed. We were still trying to overcome the problems caused by that deluge, when on 8 August 2019, due to heavy rainfall in the Monsoon season, severe flood affected Kerala causing landslides.

There were different types of alertred, orange and yellow, in different districts. Thousands of people were evacuated to safer places and relief camps. A total of 101 people died due to rain-related incidents. The camps had more than 2 lakh people from various parts of the state.

Why these floods and landslides? They are actqally caused by man! Biodiversity is destroyed. Resources are mismanaged. The are as which would hold the water are filled up and townships are constructed in the name of urbanization. The outlets to the sea are partially blocked and the rivers can’t easily drain into the seas. Once in a while we speak of conservation and plant a tree here Or there. But we continue with our deforestation, sand-mining and overexploiting our minerals.

We continue polluting our environment with vehicles and factories arid spraying poisons over our fields. If we destroy the environment, it will definitely destroy us through floods, droughtSiand pandemics like Covid-19 which ‘ we are still fighting with. Disrupt the environment and it will disrupt us in more than one way. So let us be preservers of our environment and not its destroyers. Mehboob Saithu, lrinjalakuda

Question 29.
‘Honest is the best policy.’ But unfortunately, persons uploading this policy are rare nowadays. And, honest persons like Mahatma Gandhi and Robert Baldwin are the rarest. As a member of Gandhi Darsan Club, prepare a speech on the importance of honesty in public life, to be delivered in a function in connection with Gandhi Jayanthi celebration.
Answer:
Respected Principal, teachers and fellow students, Today we are celebrating Gandhi Jayanthi. Gandhiji, the Father of our beloved Nation, was ah epitome of honesty. Even as a small boy he was honest in his dealings. He has mentioned an incident that happened during his school days in his autobiography. A school inspector had come to his class to make inspection. The students were asked to write down some English words.

The intention of the inspector was to check the spelling ability of the students. The teacher was going round and found that one word was misspelt by Gandhi. The teacher touched him on the shoulder indicating that his spelling is wrong and he should copy the right spelling from his neighbour’s notebook. But Gandhi refused to do it. Later the teacher scolded him for not copying the right spelling. But Gandhi said if was immoral and he would not do it.

You may have heard the story of Robert Baldwin. He was the governor of a bank which was owned by John Gresham. John Gresham misappropriated a huge amount of money that belonged to the depositors. He was arrested and was in jail. Only Baldwin was the witness to the crime. So Gresham offered him 100,000 dollars just to say, “I don’t remember” in the court.

If he said that there would be no evidence against Gresham and he would be left free. But Baldwin refused to sell his conscience v even for such a huge sum of 100,000 dollars. Even Gresham was so impressed by the honesty of Baldwin that he strongly recommended him for a big job to the President of the Third International.

Honesty is certainly the best policy. Dishonesty might bring us some temporary gains, but our conscience will be troubling us with the sense of guilt. We should follow the footsteps of Gandhiji and Robert Baldwin.

Question 31.
As per the NITI Aayog, a policy think tank of the Government of India, Kerala is ranked first in the quality of school eduation offered in the country. Reading the above news, attempt an article on ‘Education ” Kerla Model’, critically evaluating the school education system in Kerala. (Hints: Present educational system – merits – model for other states – demerits – suggestions for improvement, etc.)
Answer:
EDUCATION: KERALA MODEL
The Niti Aayog’s recent School Education Quality Index saw Kerala topping the category of large states with 82.2 percentage points followed by Tamil Nadu with 73.4 percentage points. The state ranks first in literacy rate too. The National Literacy Mission had declared Kerala a 100 per cent literate state way back in 1991. A literate person is identified as one who can read, write and count. Kerala has always had a successful story to tell in the education sector.

The Total Literacy Movement, “A Leave-No-Person-Behind” policy pioneered in 1989, took it a step further. Many  organisations played a big role in making the programme a success. The effort still continues today to include the, vulnerable sections like the coastal fishermen community and the tribal population in the hills.

Kerala became a role model for other states because of the good governance models in the past. A cornerstone was the government schools in the villages which imparted free education and encouraged everyone to join. The Gulf boom of the 1970s in the state also coincided with the mushrooming of ‘English medium’ private schools.

State-run schools slowly started losing their sheen but successive governments have been trying their best to bring the government schools back to their old glory. Kerala is so successful because the people here realize that education is the key for progress. That is why we are 100% literate and all the other Indian States want to make Kerala their role model in education.

Question 32.
Read the poem given below. Compare and contrast it with ‘Stammer’ and attempt a critical appreciation.
Speech Impediment

I have a speech impediment
I can’t say my “r”s
I can’t say “railroad”
It sounds like wailwoad

I have a hard timeipronouncing the letter “r”
I have a hard time saying “Ronald Regan rides on railroad rails”.
It comes out “Ronald Regan wides on
wailwoad walls”.

I get embarrassed sometimes
When I try to pronounce certain words
I get embarrased sometimes
When I can’t pronounce some words and
people have a hard time understanding
what I say.

Let’s just face it,
i probably will never be able to pronounce
the letter “r”
So ….. I will probably never be able to pronounce
“Ronald Regan rides on railroad rails”
-Anonymous
Answer:
“Speech Impediment” is a funny poem. The poet admits that he can’t pronounce the letter ‘r’. For ‘railroad’, he will say ‘wailroad’. If he wants to say Ronald Reagan rides on railroad rails it will come out as if the President “wides on wailroad wails”. He gets embarrassed at times when he tries to pronounce certain words. Sometimes people find it hard to understand him because of his speech impediment. But he accepts his defect and is ready to go forward.

The poem is by an anonymous writer and it was intended to make fun of Ronald Regan who was the 40th President of America. He was President from 1981 to 1989 and became a highly influential voice of modem conservatism. He died in 2004. There is a lot of repetition in the poem and it is intended for pure fun. It does not have any profound thought but it brings out the problem of some people who can’t- produce certain sounds. The public often ridicules and laughs at those who have speech impediments.

The poem “Stammer” is by K. Satchidanandan. It is not an easy poem because of its highly complex imagery. The poet asserts that sta^ijiper itself is a language. The poet does not seemgtp give much respect to God because he has said thateven God stammered when he created man. The poet thinks that man is so imperfect and full of vile maybe because God stammered while creating man. The insight and imagery of the poem “Stammer” are extraordinary. People stammer when they are tense or afraid. On many social issues we stammer because we are afraid to speak openly. The poem opens our eyes and we start seeing ‘stammer’ in a different perspective.

Comparing the two poems is a difficult task. The poem “Speech Impediment” is for pure fun but “Stammer” contains profound thoughts that will make us think. I prefer the straightforward poem “Speech Impediment” to the highly complex “Stammer”.
