Answer:
When I was small I wanted to be Rosamma, who was a trapeze artist in a circus. Rosamma wore shiny
clothes and people clapped for her when she performed. When I was 8,1 wanted to be Kalpana Chawla, the Indian bom American astronaut. When I was 12,1 wanted to be Amelia Earheart, the first female pilot who wanted to circumnavigate the world. Now I am 18 and I want to be a fighter pilot. That is why I am keeping the pictures of Bhawana, Avani and Mohana on my wall. They were the first women fighter pilots in India. I am sure I will become a fighter pilot like them and one day they would be my friends.

(B) On a very hot day, Rebecca saw her mother crying. She said that their crops were bad that year and their goats and sheep might die. Later Rebecca went to the school library and searched for more information about the rain. What she learned alarmed her. The world is getting hotter and there is less rain. She learned a new term “climate change”. Cars, buses and aeroplanes are polluting the air.

Write down the thoughts of Rebecca.
Your writing should include answers to these questions:
• Why was Rebecca’s mother crying?
• Why did Rebecca go to the library?
• Why is she alarmed?
• How is the air polluted?
Answer:
When I asked my mother why she was crying she told me that our crops were bad this year and our goats and sheep might die. I had never seen her crying like that before. She further told me that the rains had failed and that is why the crops were bad and the goats and sheep might die. I felt she was right. I had never experienced such heat in my life.

The water level in our well and the pond was getting lower and lower and it looked they would soon become completely dry. I must find out the reason for this change. So when I go to school, I will go the library and check for more information about the lack of rain in our area this year. When there is too much rain and there are floods we curse the rain. But wh6n we have no rain, things are even worse!

Answer:
Rasheed : For me this is honey mango tree.

Writer : Honey mango tree? How is that?

Rasheed : Once I came here to meet my brother who was a police officer. Then I saw an old man lying under a tree and crying. I wanted to give him some water. I went to the house nearby. A woman was sitting and reading a newspaper. I told her about the old man.

Writer : What happened then?

Rasheed : She gave me a pitcher of water and came with me to see the old man. When I gave the pitcher to the old man he did something surprising. He went to a withered mango sapling and poured half of the water on it.

Writer : Wonderful. He must have been a lover of nature.

Rasheed : Indeed he was. After watering the plant he drank the remaining water. He said his name was Yusuf Sidhik and he was a fakir. Soon he died and we buried him in the local graveyard. The woman was Asma and she was a school teacher. We liked each other.

Writer : Good. And then?

Rasheed : Asma continued watering the sapling and giving it manure. It grew and started producing mangoes. Our love also grew. I married Asma. Later when a son was bom to us, we named him Yusuf Sidhik. Thus this mango tree is very special for us. It is the honey mango tree for us.

Writer : Very good! Thank you for the mangoes and the story!

B) In “Seed and Soil” we saw Paru and her grandmother Echuvamma go to the paddy fields. They joined the farmers in planting the seedlings. Echuvamma then told Pam about the farmers and the methods of farming. Write down the likely conversation between them. Write at least four exchanges.
Answer:
Paru : Echuvamma, I can see some men and women planting the paddy seedlings. They are also humming an old folk song. Why do they sing when they work, Echuvamma?

Echuvamma : The singing makes them energetic and forget the pain they have as they bend in the hot sun and plant the seedlings.

Paru : I didn’t know that Echuvamma. Can we join them?

Echuvamma : Of course we can. Hold my hand and I will take you near them. Be careful as you walk in the muddy farm. We can also take some seedlings and plant with them.

Paru : I feel so happy in planting the seedlings.

Echuvamma : Pam, the sun is getting very hot. If you stay for long in the hot sun, you will catch cold. It is better that you go home without spending more time here.

Paru : No, Echuvamma. I like to stay with you here.

Echuvamma : You are a naughty girl! I was also like you when I was your age.

Paru : Echuvamma naughty! Unbelievable! You must be joking.

A Fox and Grapes

One day, a fox was roaming about in the forest. He was very hungry. Then he saw nice bunches of grapes which were hanging from the vine that crept around a tall tree. He wants to eat the grapes. He jumps many times to get a bunch. But he can’t get them as they were at a great height. The fox realised he can’t get them. So he was disappointed. He went away saying, “Who wants those sour grapes?”

The moral of the story: Talking bad about something because you are unable to obtain it is not good habit.
