Michel said if he were taller he could help his team to win. Daddy then said that Michael was already a great player. He added that he had everything in him to make him a winner. Practice, determination and giving his best are more important than being a little taller. They are the qualities that make a person a winner.
Write down the thoughts of Michael.
When writing, think of the following:
• What was his mother’s advice?
• Why was he unhappy?
• What advice did his Daddy give him and what was the result?
Answer:
I want to be taller because I want my team to win in the basketball game. But Mark, who plays for the opposite team, is much taller than I and he makes fun of me saying that I am too short. I felt so sad. 1 asked my mother how to get taller. She said I should put salt in my shoes. I tried that for 2 months, but I haven’t grown even an inch. I felt so sad and I was gloomy. So my mother sent Daddy to me to talk to me. Daddy told me that it was not the height of a player that mattered in a game. He told me I was already a great player.
He added that I had everything in me to be a winner. Being taller might help me to play a little better. But it is practice, determination and giving my best that are more important than being a little taller. I know my father is right and I take his advice seriously. In the next game I will win and show Mark that it is not how tall you are but how determined you are that decides the winner in a game.
(B) In “The Honey Mango Tree” we see how the mango tree helped in uniting Rasheed and Asma as husband and wife. When giving the sliced ripe mangoes to Basheer, Rasheed recollects his first meeting with Asma.
Write down the thoughts of Rasheed.
When writing, think of the following:
• What made Rasheed go to Asma’s house?
• How did the withering sapling grow into big tree?
• What significance does the honey mango tree have in their life?
Answer:
It is this mango tree that caused Asma and me to get married. Therefore this mango tree is very special in my life. When I was a bachelor, I had come to this place to visit my young brother who was a police inspector. In the evening I went for a walk. I saw an old man lying under a tree. He was sick and old and groaning in pain. He wanted some water. I saw a young woman sitting outside her house across the road. I went to her and asked for some water and told her about the old man.
She came with me to see the old man. When I gave the pitcher of water for him to drink, he first went and poured half the water on a withered mango sapling. Then he drank the remaining water. He told us his name was Yusuf Sidhik and he was a fakir. He died soon and we buried him in the local graveyard. The girl told me her name was Asma. Asma continued to look after the sapling and it grew well and started producing mangoes. I married Asma and we got a son whom we named Yusuf Sidhik. This mango tree is really our honey mango tree.
