Standing in the hot sun, the grandmother talked about farmers and their methods of farming. She told Pam that the farmers were dear to them because their hearts were filled with love. She added: “Leaves and dead insects decay in the soil. It is good manure for plants.” After remaining silent for a moment, she added, “The paddy fields are gradually disappearing these days.”
Write down the thoughts of the grandmother. While answering, think of the following.
• Why did Pam and the grandmother go to the field?
• Why are the farmers dear to them?
• Why are paddy fields disappearing these days?
Answer:
When I was young used to work in the rice fields a lot. I would take part in the planting, weeding, harvesting and threshing the paddy. We worked in groups and often we sang while working. The singing kept us happy and energetic and we did not feel tired even when the sun was hot and work was hard. I like the farmers because their hearts are filled with love. They are honest and are ready to help the needy people. They are less selfish than the city people. But it is a pity that paddy fields are disappearing fast these days. People find cultivating cash crops like mbber and sugar cane is more profitable for them and it also involves less labour.
B) Rasheed and his neighbour were standing under a mango tree Then Rasheed told him that mango tree had a special place in his heart. Then Rasheed’s son. a young boy of 16, came with a plate of ripe, sliced mangoes. The neighbour said the mango tasted like honey.
Write down Rasheed’s thoughts. While writing you may think of these:
• Who planted the mango tree and who nourished it?
• How did Rasheed meet his future wife?
• What is the name of the son of Rasheed? How did he get that name?

Answer:
Yes, the mango tastes honey. The mango tree from which this mango comes is very special in my life. When I was a bachelor, I had come to this place to visit my young brother who was a police inspector. In the evening I went for a walk. I saw an old man lying under a tree. He was sick and old and groaning in pain. He wanted some water. I saw a young woman, Asma, sitting outside her house across the road. I went to her and asked for some water and told her about the old man. She came with me to see the old man. When I gave the pitcher of water for him to drink, he first went and poured half the water on a withered mango sapling. Then he drank the remaining water. He told us his name was Yusuf Sidhik and he was a fakir. He died soon and we buried him in the local graveyard. Asma continued to look after the sapling and it grew well. I married Asma and we got a son whom we named Yusuf Sidhik. The mango tree has been giving us mangoes and it is really my honey mango tree.
