Answer:
Usha Chaumer belongs to the Scheduled Caste that worked traditionally as scavengers. Although untouchability is legally abolished, many Indians still consider members of some castes and tribes as untouchables and they try to keep away from them as far as possible. Usha started work when she was 7 years old. She got married when she was only 11. They ate the left-over food items from the houses they scavenged and they wore the old dresses given to them. Things began to change when Sulabha International set up an NGO called “Disha”. Usha joined Disha and learnt some skills like stitching bags, making lamps and preparing jam and pickle. Inspired by Usha hundreds of women were inspired to give up scavenging and take up other jobs. Usha wanted the system of manual scavenging to be abolished completely, with Usha’s active support, there was a move to build modem toilets in the houses. Usha’s aim is to build a better society completely free of untouchability. She was awarded “Padma Shri” in 2020 by the then President Ram Nath Kovind for her Social Work. Government Girls H.S. School, Irinjalakuda Social Club 18 September 2025 NOTICE One of the biggest problems the teenagers face today is their lack of interest in sports and such other outdoor activities. They prefer to spend their time looking into their mobiles. Addiction to the social media is dangerous for the physical and mental health of the teenagers. Sports are important because they promote physical fitness, enhancing heart health, strong bones, and healthy weight management while reducing the risk of chronic illnesses. Sports also significantly improve mental health by releasing mood-stabilizing hormones, reducing stress and anxiety. Furthermore, sports teach crucial life skills such as teamwork, leadership, discipline, and time management, and foster social connections, community, and self-confidence. To let the students know the importance of sports, an awareness class is organised. The Class starts with a meeting presided by the President of our Parents-Teachers’ Association. The President of the Irinj alakuda Sports Council will also speak on the occasion. Venue : School Auditorium All are invited. Sd/ |

Question 5.
Conversation
On 8 September 2025, two friends Gopi and John went to see the Pulikkali in Thrissur. They were highly impressed by what they saw. On their way back home, they are talking about the Pulikkali they saw. Write the possible conversation between Gopi and John.
Answer:
Conversation
John : Gopi, I never thought, Pulikkali was so fascinating. My God, look at the make-up of the artists and their performance. I think there is no such performance anywhere else in the world.
Gopi : You’re quite right. Pulikkali on such a large scale is unique to Thrissur. There are minor variations in other towns like Irinjalakuda, but the one in Thrissur is really superb. Artists paint themselves as tigers and leopards, dancing with energetic moves to the rhythm of traditional percussion instruments like the thakil, udukku, and chenda. It serves a vibrant display of Kerala’s rich folk art and cultural heritage.
John : How is that all those artists have big bellies?
Gopi : Only pot-bellied men are chosen to take part in the pulikkali. Men with prominent potbellies are the main attraction as they are painted as tigers and perform a wild dance. The bigger the belly, the better, as it provides a larger canvas for the intricate tiger stripes and makes the performers’ movements more lifelike and impactful.
John : I’m really impressed. Next year also I will go to see it.
