I don’t know how to start. I don’t know what people expect me to say. First, I thank God and thank every person who prayed for my fast recovery. I have received thousands of good wish cards from all over the world. I thank all of them, especially the children.
Malala Day is not my day. Today is the day of every woman, every boy and every girl who have raised their voice for their rights. There. are thousands of human rights activists and social workers who are working to give education, and bring peace and equality. Thousands have been killed and millions have been injured by terrorists. I am one of them. We realise the importance of light when there is darkness. We realise the importance of voice when it is silenced. When we were in Swat, the North of Pakistan, we realised the importance of pens and books when we saw the guns.
The saying “The pen is mightier than the Sword” is true. The extremists are afraid of books and pens. The power of education 920 frightens them. They are afraid of women and their voice.
Peace is necessary for education. In many parts of the world terrorism, wars and conflicts stop children from going to school. We are tired of these wars. Women and children suffer in many parts of the world. Many children are victims of child labour. Your girls are forced to do domestic child labour and are forced to get married very young. The main problems are poverty, ignorance, injustice, racism and the deprivation of basic rights.
Today I am focusing on women’s rights and girls’ education. In the past women social activists asked men to stand up for their rights. But now we want to do it ourselves. I am not saying that men should step away from fighting for women’s rights. I am saying women must be independent to fight for their rights.
We call upon the world leaders that all the peace deals must protect women’s and children’s rights. Any deal that is against the dignity and rights of women is not acceptable. We call upon all governments to give free and compulsory education to every child in the world. We want all the governments to fight against terrorism and violence, and to protect children. The developed nations should help the developing nations to give more education oopportunities to girls.
We want communities to be tolerant, to reject prejudices based on caste, creed, religion and gender. They should ensure freedom and equality for women. No progress can happen if half of the people are held back. Women should realise their full potential. We want schools and education for every child’s bright future. Our destiny is peace and education for all. No one can stop us. We will speak for our rights. We will bring changes. We should believe in the power and strength of our words. Our words can change the world.
We are all together and united for the cause of education. Let us empower ourselves with the weapon of knowledge and let us shield ourselves with unity and togetherness. We must not forget that millions of people are suffering from poverty, injustice and ignorance. Millions of children are out of schools. Our sisters and brothers are waiting for a bright and peaceful future.
Let us wage a global struggle against illiteracy, poverty and terrorism and let us pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world. Education is the only solution. Education first.
