The law changed very quickly because of Mr. Borders: if you are married to a French citizen, it will now take two years for you to claim the benefits of citizenship. By this delay Mr. Borders is relying on the nature of his countrymen to break up the relationship. Then, as the ex-wife of a Frenchman, the foreign woman becomes no more than an ex-object. She has no rights, not even the right to earn an honest living. They won’t give me citizenship, but my Senegalese cat has his papers. Perhaps because he is red or orange-brown.
Laws only gather pace when ordinary people start applying them. Termites can cause the collapse of African mahogany trees. The size of an anthill depends on the number of worker ants. It is thus the small employers who make the policy of preference nationale effective.
I was looking for a job in one of the free papers. I came across this ad: “Larger bakery in the city centre looking for salesgirl. Dialect desirable. Please come to the shop.
I wrote the down the address and told a French friend about it on the phone that evening. “Are you nuts?” she asked. “You could do better than that. I’ve the same qualifications as you and I am finishing my teacher training. You’ll be bored selling bread and pastries all day.”
“I’d be happy to do something,” I replied. “My qualification may be French, but my brain isn’t recognised as such and so it is not allowed to function. In the meantime I have to eat. At least selling bread, I won’t starve.” She said it was ridiculous and I could find something else. I had heard such things a hundred times. My French friend did not know how here my life was.
The next morning I went to the bakery. Everything was white except the chocolate cake. The boss welcomed me. He had a German moustache, an Alsace accent, and wore a hat in the colours of the French flag. From the way he stared at me, I knew I had not made it through the qualifying round. The man did not like my colour. I told him I was there for the job he advertised.
He shook his head and asked me if I spoke ‘Alsatian’. The ad had said ‘Dialect desirable.’ My accent was different from his. He was asking me to connect his clients in Alsatian. I told him I didn’t speak Alsatian.
From his eyes I knew he would not give me the job. To justify his refusal and humiliate me he asked me why I didn’t go and work in my own country. I said goodbye and left. But I would have liked to tell him things like these: “You should have asked me why I want your stinking job. You made the African soil poor by making us grow sugarcane and peanuts for your people. You have plundered our resources to enrich your country. You used my people as cannon fodder in your war. In that war you made them kill your enemies in the name of freedom. But you refused them freedom in their own African soil.”
Still without work, I was looking through the paper again. I saw this ad: “Tutor required for French lessons. Degree essential. Call after 7 p.m.”
I took down the number. I did not tell my friend this time. She would have asked me about the bakery job.
At 7.10 p.m. I rang the number. A woman answered. She was a cashier in a supermarket. She wanted someone to tutor her 11-year daughter. She asked me to meet her in a city centre café the following afternoon.
When I reached the cafe, it was full. Madame had told she’d be wearing a white jersey with blue stripes. I spotted her. I introduced myself and showed a part of my brain that had lying dormant in a folder – the famous degree. The waiter came and asked me what I wanted. I ordered some kind of fruit juice. He soon brought.
She is French but she hadn’t passed her degree. She could not tutor her daughter. She refused me work because of black lips which can speak the niceties of French grammar better than hers. I stood up. Before I left I wanted to show her my anger. I told her, “Goodbye, madame. If you had what I have between my ears, you would not be working as a supermarket cashier.”
The woman examined my degree and returned it to me. She then said, “I want a European-type person. I don’t want anyone messing up my child’s education.”
As I moved away she said, “Come back. You haven’t paid for your drink.” I told her that she should pay for it as travel expenses. “Being a cashier your will know that everything must be paid for, even the services of coloureds, as you call us.” She shouted angrily, “Go back to your jungle.” My mother- in-law had shouted the same phrase at me. I had to answer the cashier. I told her, “You should come with me for the fresh air in the jungle. It is revitalizing. It would save you a facelift.” She sat there muttering, angry. I thanked God for not afflicting me with such anger. My skin keeps its dignity.
That evening I called a friend from college, a real white girl. She was looking for some part-time work while she did her degree. I gave her the cashier’s number. The next evening I heard her happy voice on my answering machine. “Thanks for the help. I started working for the lady this morning. But if you are interested, she has a neighbour who is looking for a cleaner.”
