Her name was Parvathi. She was called Paru by the neighbours and the people around. There were paddy fields all around her house. She loved the fields, the trees and the plants. She cared for all the living things around her. Paru’s mother had died of an uncommon disease years ago. Paru really missed her mother very much. She often remembers what her mother told her: “Nature is our mother.” Paru’s father often consoled her by saying, “Never think Amma is gone. She is with us.” Paru’s grandmother also did whatever she could to make her happy. She followed Paru like a shadow. Paru loved her grandmother very much. She called her Echuvamma.
One bright day, Paru’s father went on a journey to a place far away. Paru decided to go to the paddy fields with her grandmother. When she told the grandmother of her desire, she readily agreed. They went to the fields.
They stood at the edge of the field and looked out at the vast fields. The fields were covered with muddy water. A warm breeze made ripples on the surface. The air was alive with the sounds of birds. Some men and women were planting the paddy seedlings. They were humming an old folk song. Paru asked her grandmother if they could join the farmers. Paru held her grandmother’s hand and they went into the field.
They joined the farmers in planting the seedlings. The farmers were glad to see them. They became more energetic. Paru soon saw that Echuvamma was tired. She asked her grandmother if she needed an umbrella. Grandmother did not want any umbrella. Paru held her grandmother’s hand and they walked through the field. The sun was getting hot. Paru was sweating. She then told Paru that she should go home. If she continued staying in the sun Paru might catch cold. The grandmother was used to the heat, but not Paru. But Paru said she wanted to stay with her grandmother. Her grandmother lovingly called her a naughty girl and she was always like that. They continued walking.
Standing in the hot sun, the grandmother talked about farmers and their methods of farming. She told Paru that the farmers were dear to them because their hearts were filled with love. She added: “Leaves and dead insects decay in the soil. It is good manure for plants.” She was silent for some time and then she continued with sadness in her voice: “The paddy fields are gradually disappearing these days.” She took a bunch of paddy plants and held it close to her chest. She then started a melodious folk song.
The sweet song echoed in the field. Paru was enjoying the song. Suddenly she remembered her father. She looked towards the home to see if her father had come back. She knew that he would not allow his old mother to stand in the hot sun for long. Echuvamma was 68, but her spirits were strong. Echuvamma was again busy with the work. Soon she felt a mild touch on her shoulder. It was Paru’s father. He told her that it was getting too hot and if she continued staying in the sun she would be totally tired. He wanted her and Paru go home with him. Echuvammna looked at him smilingly and told him that the farm was her home and she was quite fine there.
The day’s experience moved Paru deeply. She learned many things. She saw the news ways of farming. She learned about the importance of farmers. She felt the warmth of Mother Earth under her feet. For a moment she thought of her mother. She felt her absence. She lay on the ground like a child in its mother’s lap.

അവളുടെ പേര് പാർവതി എന്നായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ അയൽക്കാരും മറ്റുള്ളവരും അവളെ പാറു എന്നാണ് വിളിച്ചിരുന്നത്. അവളുടെ വീടിനു ചുറ്റും നെൽവയലുകൾ ആയിരുന്നു. അവൾക്ക് അവയെ വലിയ ഇഷ്ടമായിരുന്നു. അവിടെയുള്ള മരങ്ങളേയും ചെടികളേയും അവൾ നന്നായി സ്നേഹിച്ചു. അവൾക്കു ചുറ്റുമുള്ള മറ്റു ജീവികളെ അവൾ പരിചരിച്ചു. പാറുവിന്റെ അമ്മയുടെ അഭാവം അവളെ വളരെ വേദനിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. അമ്മ പറഞ്ഞിരുന്ന ഒരു കാര്യം അവൾ എപ്പോഴും ഓർക്കും. “പ്രകൃതിയാണ് നിന്റെ അമ്മ. പാറുവിന്റെ അച്ഛൻ അവളെ സാന്ത്വനിപ്പിക്കും. അദ്ദേഹം പറയും. അമ്മ നമ്മുടെ കൂടെ യുണ്ട്. അവൾ എങ്ങും പോയിട്ടില്ല.” പാറുവിനെ സന്തോഷിപ്പിക്കാൻ അവളുടെ അമ്മൂമ്മയും അവർക്കു പറ്റുന്നതൊക്കെ ചെയ്തു. അവർ ഒരു നിഴൽപോലെ എപ്പോഴും പാറുവിനെ പിൻ തുടർന്നു. പാറുവിനും അമ്മൂമ്മയെ വളരെ ഇഷ്ടമായിരുന്നു. അവൾ അമ്മൂമ്മയെ എച്ചുവമ്മ എന്നാണ് വിളിച്ചിരുന്നത്.
നല്ല തെളിച്ചമുള്ള ഒരു ദിവസം. പാറുവിന്റെ അച്ഛൻ ദൂരെയുള്ള ഒരു സ്ഥലത്തേക്കു പോയി. അമ്മൂമ്മയേയും കൂട്ടി പാടത്തുപോകാം എന്ന് പാറു തീരുമാനിച്ചു. അമ്മൂമ്മയും തയ്യാറായി. അവർ പാട ത്തേക്കു പോയി.
ഒരു പാടത്തിന്റെ വക്കിൽ നിന്നുകൊണ്ട് അവർ ആ പാടശേഖരങ്ങളെ നിരീക്ഷിച്ചു. പാടത്ത് നിറയെ വെള്ളമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ആകാശത്തിൽ നിന്നും പക്ഷികളുടെ ശബ്ദം കേൾക്കാം. കുറച്ചു ആണുങ്ങളും പെണ്ണുങ്ങളും ഞാറു നടുകയായിരുന്നു. അവർ ഒരു പഴയ നാടൻ പാട്ടുമൂളുന്നുണ്ട്. അവരുടെ കൂടെ കൂടാമോ എന്ന് പാറു അമ്മൂമ്മയോടു ചോദിച്ചു. അമ്മൂമ്മയുടെ കൈക്കു പിടിച്ച് പാറുവും അമ്മൂമ്മയും പാടത്തേക്കിറങ്ങി.
അവർ കൃഷിക്കാരുടെ കൂടെ ചേർന്ന് ഞാറുപാകാൻ തുടങ്ങി. അവരെ കണ്ടപ്പോൾ കൃഷി ക്കാർക്ക് സന്തോഷമായി. അവർക്ക് ഉത്സാഹം കൂടി. എച്ചുവമ്മ ക്ഷീണിതയായി എന്ന് പാറു മനസ്സി ലാക്കി. കുട വേണോ എന്ന് അവൾ അമ്മൂമ്മയോട് ചോദിച്ചു. അമ്മൂമ്മ പറഞ്ഞു, കുടയൊന്നും അവർക്കു വേണ്ടെന്ന്. പാറു അമ്മൂമ്മയുടെ കൈയ്യിൽ പിടിച്ചു. അവർ വയലിൽ നടക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി. സൂര്യന്റെ ചൂട് കൂടിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. പാറു വിയർക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അമ്മൂമ്മ അപ്പോൾ അവളോടു പറഞ്ഞു, വീട്ടി ലേക്കു പോകാൻ. അമ്മൂമ്മക്ക് ചൂട് ഒരു പ്രശ്നമല്ല. പക്ഷേ പാറുവിന് അത് പ്രശ്നമാണ്. കൂടുതൽ നേരം വെയിലത്തു നിന്നാൽ പാറുവിന് ജലദോഷം പിടിക്കും. ചൂടത്തു നിന്ന് അമ്മൂമ്മക്ക് പരിചയമുണ്ട്. പാറു വിന് അതില്ല. പക്ഷേ വീട്ടിൽ പോകാൻ അവൾ വിസമ്മതിച്ചു. അമ്മ അവളെ സ്നേഹത്തോടെ “കുസൃതി പ്പെണ്ണ്” എന്നു വിളിച്ചു. പാറു എപ്പോഴും അങ്ങിനെയായിരുന്നു. അവർ നടത്തം തുടർന്നു.
നല്ല വെയിലത്തു നിന്നുകൊണ്ട് അമ്മൂമ്മ കൃഷിക്കാരെപ്പറ്റിയും അവരുടെ കൃഷി രീതികളെപ്പ റ്റിയും സംസാരിച്ചു. അവർ പാറുവിനോടു പറഞ്ഞു, കൃഷിക്കാർ അവർക്ക് ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടവരാണ്. കാരണം അവരുടെ ഹൃദയം നിറയേ സ്നേഹമാണെന്ന്. അവർ കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്തു, “ഇലകളും ചത്തജീവികളും മണ്ണിൽ ലയിച്ചു ചേരുന്നു. ചെടികൾക്ക് നല്ല വളമാണത്. കുറച്ചു നേരത്തെ മൗനത്തിനു ശേഷം അവർ ദുഃഖ ത്തോടെ തുടർന്നു, “നെൽവയലുകൾ ക്രമേണ ഇല്ലാതായിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്.” അവർ കുറച്ചു ഞാറു കൾ എടുത്ത് നെഞ്ചോടു ചേർത്തുവച്ചിട്ട് ഒരു ഈണമുള്ള നാടൻപാട്ടു പാടാൻ തുടങ്ങി.
മധുരമുള്ള ആ പാട്ട് വയലിൽ പ്രതിധ്വനിച്ചു. പാറു ആ പാട്ട് ആസ്വദിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. പെട്ടെന്ന് അവൾ അച്ഛനെ ഓർത്തു. അവൾ വീടിന്റെ ദിശയിലേക്കു നോക്കി, അച്ഛൻ തിരിച്ചെത്തിയോ എന്നറിയാൻ. അവൾക്കറിയാമായിരുന്നു തന്റെ അമ്മയെ അധികം നേരം വെയിലത്തു നിർത്താൻ അദ്ദേഹം സമ്മതിക്കില്ല എന്ന്. എച്ചുവമ്മക്ക് 68 വയസ്സായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ അവരുടെ ഉത്സാഹത്തിന് ഒരു കുറവും ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു. എച്ചുവമ്മ വീണ്ടും ജോലിയിൽ വ്യാപൃതയായി. പെട്ടെന്ന് തന്റെ തോളിൽ ആരോ തൊടു ന്നതായി അവർക്കു തോന്നി. പാറുവിന്റെ അച്ഛനായിരുന്നു അത്. അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു, വെയിൽ കൂടിക്കൊ ണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണെന്നും കൂടുതൽ നേരം വെയിലത്തു നിന്നാൽ അവർക്ക് ക്ഷീണം വരുമെന്നും.
അമ്മയും, പാറുവും തന്റെ കൂടെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു വരണം എന്നായിരുന്നു അയാളുടെ ആഗ്രഹം. പുഞ്ചിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് എച്ചുവമ്മ തന്റെ മകനെ നോക്കി, എന്നിട്ട് പറഞ്ഞു, വയൽ അവരുടെ വീടാണെന്നും അവർക്ക് സുഖമാണെന്നും.
ആ ദിവസത്തെ അനുഭവം പാറുവിനെ അഗാധമായി സ്പർശിച്ചു. അവൾ പലതും പഠിച്ചു. പുതിയതരം കൃഷി രീതികളെപ്പറ്റി അവൾ മനസ്സിലാക്കി. കൃഷിക്കാരുടെ പ്രാധാന്യം അവൾ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു. ഭൂമിയമ്മയുടെ സ്നേഹം കാലിനടിയിൽ അവൾക്കനുഭവപ്പെട്ടു. ഒരു നിമിഷത്തേക്ക് അവൾ സ്വന്തം അമ്മയെ ഓർത്തു. അമ്മ യുടെ അഭാവം അവൾക്കനുഭവപ്പെട്ടു. ഒരമ്മയുടെ മടി യിൽ എന്ന പോലെ അവൾ നിലത്തു കിടന്നു.
