The story begins with Ranjit and Aman asking Radha about her swimming skills. Radha was a village girl from Kumaon Hills in UP who had come to visit her aunt and spend her summer vacation. Back at home, she used to swim every day as she lived on the banks of River Sarayu. She did not have any particular style of swimming and this amused Ranjit and Aman. They did not know that she learned swimming even before she learned to walk.
Radha’s aunt asked her sons, Ranjit and Aman, to take Radha to their club. They were not keen on taking her there. But they were afraid to disobey her. So they came up with an excuse that in their club everyone must have a swimming costume for swimming. Radha didn’t have any swimming costume as she swam in her salwar kurta in her village. The boys went as soon as their friends arrived leaving Radha to watch TV with her aunt. Radha hid her sadness from her aunt with hollow laughter and said that she wasn’t interested in going to the club.
Radha was very excited when after class VIII exams her aunt invited her to spend her summer vacation in Delhi. She looked forward to it as she had never been out of her village. Her cousins were almost her age but even after a week she couldn’t get along with them and felt lonely as their backgrounds were different. Her cousins and their friends had different interests. They always discussed computers and video game, listened to pop music and watched western films. Radha felt lost among them but when she heard they were going to swim in the club’s swimming pool, she wanted to go with them. But here also her cousins disappointed her and she cried.
Radha’s uncle. had announced that he would take everyone for a picnic on the banks of the river Yamuna on Saturday. The boys were excited. So was Radha. The boys would call some of their friends to go with them. On the day of the picnic, the weather was pleasant and a cool breeze blew. The place was at the foothill of Shiwalik. After lunch, the grownups got busy with their cards and the kids explored the surrounding. Radha was with them for some time but she felt they were not very keen on having her. So she settled down on a big rock and started reading.
Soon the other kids wore their swimming costumes and went into the water.
By the time they reached the bank, a big crowd had gathered. People pulled them away from the water. Radha was panting, her throat was dry, and she shivered uncontrollably. Someone wrapped her with a blanket and she drank two mugs of steaming hot coffee to gain back her strength. Ranjit came up to her to compliment her on her swimming skills and asked her to teach him to swim the way she did. She swam like a fish. She said she did not know any style of swimming. Ranjit held out his hand to her. Seeing this gesture of love and admiration, Radha’s face glowed with happiness.

കഥ തുടങ്ങുന്നത് രൺജിത്തും അമാനും രാധ യോട് നീന്തലിലുള്ള അവളുടെ കഴിവുകളെപ ററി ചോദിച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ്. ഉത്തർപ്രദേശിലെ കുമാവോ കുന്നുകൾക്ക് അടുത്തുള്ള ഒരു ഗ്രാമ ത്തിൽ നിന്നുമാണ് രാധ വരുന്നത്. തന്റെ അമ്മാ യിയുടെ കൂടെ വേനൽ അവധി ചിലവഴിക്കാ നാണ് അവൾ ഡൽഹിയിൽ വന്നിരിക്കുന്നത്. വീട്ടിലായിരുന്നപ്പോൾ അവൾ എന്നും സരയു നദിയിൽ നീന്തുമായിരുന്നു. ആ നദിയുടെ തീര ത്താണ് അവൾ താമസിച്ചിരുന്നത്. നീന്തലിലെ പ്രത്യേക സ്റ്റൈൽ ഒന്നും അവൾക്കറിയില്ല. അത് കേട്ടപ്പോൾ രൺജിത്തിനും അമാനിനും അവ ളോട് പുച്ഛമാണ് തോന്നിയത്. പക്ഷേ അവൾ നടക്കാൻ പഠിച്ചതിന് മുൻപ് തന്നെ, നീന്താൻ പഠിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്ന കാര്യം അവർക്ക് അറിയാൻ പാടില്ലായിരുന്നു.
മക്കളാണ് രാധയുടെ അമ്മായി യുടെ രൺജിത്തും അമാനും അമ്മായി തന്റെ മക്കളോട് പറഞ്ഞു അവർ ക്ലബിൽ പോകുമ്പോൾ രാധ യേയും കൂടെ കൊണ്ടുപോകണമെന്ന്. രാധയെ തങ്ങളുടെ കൂടെ കൊണ്ടു പോകാൻ അവർക്കൊരു താല്പര്യവും ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ അമ്മയെ പേടിയുള്ളതു കാരണം അവർക്ക് രാധയെ കൂടെ കൊണ്ടു പോകാതിരി ക്കാനും നിർവ്വാഹമില്ല. അപ്പോൾ അവർ ഒരു ഉപായം കണ്ടുപിടിച്ചു. അവർ പറഞ്ഞു ക്ലബിലെ സിഗം പൂളിൽ എല്ലാവരും സ്വിമ്മിംഗ് കോസ്റ്റും ധരിക്കണം. രാധക്ക് സ്വിമ്മിംഗ് കോം ഇല്ല. അവളുടെ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ അവൾ സൽവാർ കുർത്ത ധരിച്ചാണ് നീന്തിയിരുന്നത്. ഇങ്ങനെ വർത്തമാനം പറയുന്നതിനിടയിൽ രൺജിത്തിന്റേയും അമാന്റേയും കൂട്ടുകാർ വന്നു. അവർ കൂട്ടുകാരുടെ കൂടെ പോയി. രാധ അമ്മാ യിയുടെ കൂടെ ടി.വി. കാണാൻ ഇരുന്നു. അവൾക്ക് ക്ലബിൽ പോയി നീന്തണമെന്ന് വലിയ ആഗ്രഹം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. രൺജിത്തും അമനും അവളെ കൂടെ കൊണ്ടു പോകാത്ത തിൽ അവൾക്ക് വലിയ ദുഃഖമുണ്ട്. അമ്മായിയിൽ നിന്നും ആ ദുഃഖം, മറച്ചുവക്കാൻ അവളൊരു പൊള്ളച്ചിരി ചിരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു പറഞ്ഞു, ക്ലബിൽ പോകാനൊന്നും അവൾക്ക് താൽപര്യമില്ലെന്ന്.
എട്ടാം ക്ലാസ്സിലെ പരീക്ഷ കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ വേന ലവധി തന്റെ കൂടെ ചെലവഴിക്കാം, എന്നും പറഞ്ഞ് അമ്മായി അവളെ ഡൽഹിയിലോട്ട് ക്ഷണിച്ചിരുന്നു. വളരെയധികം സന്തോഷത്തോ ടെയും ഉത്സാഹത്തോടെയുമാണ് അവൾ ആ ക്ഷണം സ്വീകരിച്ചത്. അവൾ ഒരിക്കലും തന്റെ ഗ്രാമം വിട്ട് പുറത്തൊന്നും പോയിട്ടില്ല. അതുകൊണ്ട് ഡൽഹിയിലേക്ക് പോകാൻ അവൾക്ക് വളരെ ഉത്സാഹമായിരുന്നു. അമ്മാ യിയുടെ മക്കളായ രൺജിത്തും അമാനും അവ ളുടെ സമപ്രായക്കാരാണ്. പക്ഷേ ഒരാഴ്ച അവ രുടെകുടെ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടും, അവൾക്ക് അവരുടെ കൂടെ ഒത്തുപോകാൻ പറ്റിയില്ലാ. അവൾ ഒറ്റപ്പെ ടുന്നതുപൊലെ അവൾക്കു തോന്നി. അവളുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലവും രൺജിത്തിന്റെയും അമാന്റെയും പശ്ചാത്തലവും വളരെ വിഭിന്നമായിരുന്നു. അവ ളുടെ കസിൻസിനും അവരുടെ കൂട്ടുകാർക്കും വേറെ ചില കാര്യങ്ങളിലായിരുന്നു താല്പര്യം. അവരെപ്പോഴും കംപ്യൂട്ടറുകളെ പറ്റിയും വീഡിയോ ഗെയിമുകളേപറ്റിയും ഒക്കെ പറഞ്ഞു കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. പോപ്പ് മ്യൂസിക്ക് കേൾക്കുകയും, വെസ്റ്റേൺ സിനിമകൾ കാണുകയും ചെയ്തു. അവർക്കിടയിൽ രാധ ഒരു അപരിചിതയെ പോലെ യാ യി രു ന്നു. അവർ ക്ലബിലെ നീന്തൽകുളത്തിൽ നീന്താൻ പോകുകയാണ് എന്നറിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ അവരുടെ കൂടെ പോയി നീന്തിയാൽ കൊള്ളാമെന്ന് അവളും വളരെ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു. പക്ഷേ അവളുടെ കസിൻസ് അവളെ നിരാശപ്പെടുത്തി, അവൾക്ക് ദുഃഖം തോന്നുകയും അവൾ കരയുകയും ചെയ്തു.
രാധയുടെ അമ്മാവൻ എല്ലാവരോടും പറഞ്ഞു, അടുത്ത ശനിയാഴ്ച അദ്ദേഹം എല്ലാവരേയും യമുനാനദിയുടെ തീരത്തേക്ക് ഒരു പിക്നിക്കി ന് കൊണ്ടുപോകുമെന്ന്. ആൺകുട്ടികൾക്ക് വളരെ സന്തോഷമായി. രാധക്കും സന്തോഷ മായി. രൺജിത്തും അമാനും അവരുടെ കൂട്ടു കാരേയും വിളിക്കും. പിക്നിക്കിന്റെ ദിവസം നല്ല കാലാവസ്ഥയായിരുന്നു. ഒരു ഇളംകാറ്റ് വീശി ക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. ഷിവാലിക്കിന്റെ താഴെയാണ് അവർ പോകുന്ന സ്ഥലം. ഉച്ചയൂണ് കഴിഞ്ഞ പ്പോൾ മുതിർന്നവർ ചീട്ടുകളിയിൽ വ്യാപൃതരാ യി. കുട്ടികൾ ചുറ്റുപാടുകൾ നിരീക്ഷിക്കാൻ പോയി. രാധയും അവരുടെ കൂടെ പോയി. പക്ഷേ വേഗം തന്നെ അവൾക്കു മനസ്സിലായി. അവളെ കൂടെ കൂട്ടാൻ ആൺകുട്ടികൾക്ക് താൽപ വലിയ ര്യമില്ലെന്ന്. അതുകൊണ്ട് അവളൊരു പാറപ്പുറത്തിരുന്ന് വായിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി.
ന്നെങ്കിലും ആരും ഒഴുക്കിലേക്ക് എടുത്തുചാടി, അമാനെ രക്ഷിക്കാൻ തയ്യാറായിരുന്നില്ല. രാധ പെട്ടെന്ന് തന്നെ നദിയിലേക്ക് ചാടി. ഒഴുക്കിനെ തിരെ നീന്താൻ അമാൻ കിണഞ്ഞ് പരിശ്രമിക്കു ന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഒഴുക്ക് ശക്തമായതുകൊണ്ട് അവന് ഒഴുക്കിനെതിരെ നീന്താൻ കഴിയുന്നില്ലാ യിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ രാധക്ക് ഒഴുക്കിനെതിരെ നീന്താൻ അത്ര പ്രയാസം തോന്നിയില്ല. കാരണം അവളുടെ ഗ്രാമത്തിൽ അവളെന്നും ഒഴുക്കിനെ തിരെ നീന്തിപരിശീലനം നേടിയിരുന്നു. വേഗം തന്നെ അവൾ ക്ഷീണിതനായ അമാന്റെ അടു ത്തെത്തി. തന്റെ അരക്ക് പിടിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് കാലു കൾ ചെറുതായി ചലിപ്പിച്ച് അവളോടൊപ്പം നീന്താൻ അവൾ അവനോട് പറഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ അമാനേയും വഹിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് അവൾ നീന്തി. അമാന്റെ ഭാരം വഹിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ഒഴുക്കിനെതിരെ നീന്തുന്നത് അത്ര എളുപ്പമായിരുന്നു. അവളുടെ സർവ്വശക്തിയും ഉപയോഗിച്ച് അവളും അമാനും തീരത്ത് എത്തി.
അപ്പോഴേക്കും ഒരു വലിയ ജനക്കൂട്ടം അവിടെ തടിച്ചുകൂടിയിരുന്നു. ആൾക്കാർ അവരെ വേഗം വലിച്ചുകയറ്റി. അവൾ കിതക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവളുടെ തൊണ്ടവരണ്ടിരുന്നു. അവൾ വിറക്കു ന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ആരോ അവളെ ഒരു പുതപ്പ് പുതപ്പിച്ചു. ശക്തി തിരികെ കിട്ടാൻ അവൾ രണ്ട് കപ്പ് ചൂടൻ കാപ്പി കുടിച്ചു. രൺജിത് അവളുടെ അടുക്കൽ വന്ന് അവളുടെ നീന്തലിലെ കഴി വിനെ പ്രശംസിച്ചു. അവൾ നീന്തുന്നപോലെ നീന്താൻ അവനേയും പഠിപ്പിക്കണം എന്ന് അവൻ അപേക്ഷിച്ചു. അവൾ ഒരു മീനിനെ പോലെയാണ് നീന്തിയത്. അവൾ പറഞ്ഞു. അവൾക്ക് നീന്തൽ ശൈലികളൊന്നും അറിയി ല്ലെന്ന്. അവൻ അവളോട് ക്ഷമാപണം നടത്തു കയും അവൻ അവളുടെ നേരെ കൈ നീട്ടുകയും ചെയ്തു. അവന്റെ ഈ സ്നേഹാദരങ്ങൾ കണ്ട് രാധയുടെ മുഖം പ്രകാശിച്ചു.
