One day some children found an object shaped like a grain of corn. It was found in a deep, narrow valley. It had a groove down the middle and nd it was was as big as the egg of a hen. A traveller saw it. He bought it from the children for a penny. He took it to the king and sold it to him as it was a special one.
The king called all his wise men and asked them to find what the thing was. Even after a lot of thinking they did not understand what it was. A few days later, when the king was lying on a window sill, a hen flew in and pecked at it till she made a hole in it. It was a grain of corn.
The wise men told the king it was a grain of corn. The king was surprised. He asked the wise men to find out when and where such corn grew. The wise men looked into their books but they found nothing about it. They told the king that they have no answer. The king should ask the peasants. They may have heard from their fathers when and where a grain grew to such a size.
The king ordered some peasants to be brought before him. His servants found one such man and brought him. The man was old and bent, pale and toothless. He walked walked into the place with the help of crutches.
The king showed him the grain. The man could not see it clearly. He felt it with his hands. The king asked him where such grains grew. He wanted to know if he had bought such corn or sown it in his fields.
The old was so deaf he could hardly hear the king. He understood what the king said only with great difficulty. He said he had not sown or reaped such grains in his fields. He had never bought it. When he bought corn it was small like the corn now. He told the king that he must ask his father, who might know where such big grains grew.
The old man’s father was brought. He came walking on one crutch. He was still able to see. The king showed him the grain. The man took a good look at it. The king asked him where such big grains grew and if he bought it or sowed it in his fields. He said he never sowed or reaped any grain like that. He never bought any grain as in his time money was not yet in use. Everyone grew his corn. When there was a need they shared. He did not know such grain grew. Their grain was larger than the present grain, but not as big as the one he was shown. He has heard his father saying that in his time, the grain was larger and it yielded more flour. The king might ask him.
The old man’s father was brought. He came walking easily without crutches. His eyes were clear, hearing good, and he spoke clearly. The king showed him the grain. The old grandfather looked into it. He said it had been long since he saw such a fine grain and he bit a piece off and tasted it and said it was the very same kind.
The king asked him when and where such corn grew and if he had bought or sown any like it. The old grandfather said corn like that grew everywhere in his time. It was what they sowed, reaped and threshed. The king wanted to know if he bought it or sowed it. The old man said that in his time nobody thought of committing a sin like buying and selling. Each man had enough corn of his own.
The king then wanted to know where his field was and where he grew such corn. He said his field was God’s earth. Wherever he ploughed was his field. Land was free. Nobody called any land his own. Only labour was man’s. The king wanted answers for two more questions. i) Why has the earth stopped producing such grain? ii) Why does your grandson walk with two crutches, your son with one, and you yourself with none? Your eyes are bright, your teeth sound and your speech clear and pleasant to hear?
The old man said that things are like that because men have stopped to live by their own labour. Now they depend on the labour of others. In the past men lived according to God’s law. They had what was their own and did not want what others produced.
