It is very true that both the women in Angelou’s “Woman Work” and Robin Klein’s “Amanda” lack freedom. In “Woman Work” the mother has no freedom as she is busy the various chores of the house. She has to do many things: send the children to school, mend clothes, mop the floor, go to the shop to buy food items, fry chicken, wipe the baby, give food to the guests, weed the garden, iron the shirts, dress the children, cut the sugarcane, clean up the house, attend to the sick and pick cotton.
In the poem “Amanda”, she has no freedom at all. She can’t bite her nails or hunch her shoulders. She has to sit up straight. She has to finish the homework. She has to tidy the room, and clean her shoes. She can’t eat chocolate because of her acne. She has to look into the eyes of the mother when talking, she can’t show any anger and she can’t be moody.
