A Trip to a Hot Spring Summary in English
Summer vacation came to an end. The day of the trip to the hot spring resort finally came. For the students it was the most important event at Tomoe. The trip was to a seaside school at a place called Toi on the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka. There was a hot spring right in the sea. There the children could swim and take a hot bath. The trip was for 3 days and 2 nights. The father of one of the students had a vacation home there. All the 50 students of the Tomoe, from class 1 to 6, could stay there. Totto-Chan was not sure if her mother would allow her to go. She asked her mother if she could go. Her mother had already got a letter from the Headmaster about the trip and so Totto-Chan was allowed to go.
When all the students came together to start the trip the Headmaster told them that they would be travelling by train and ship. He did not want anyone to get lost. That was the only instruction he gave. But the children behaved well in the train. Nobody ran up and down the cars. The talk was done quietly by those who sat nearby.
The Tomoe students were never told how to behave in public. But their school life had given them the basics of decency and good behaviour. They picked up the litter they found. They never annoyed or disturbed others. The biggest surprise was Totto-Chan. In her old school she had done unimaginable things. She would even talk to the musicians in the street through the window during the class. At Tomoe, from the very first day, she was attentive in class and did her lessons properly. If any of her old teachers saw her now they would not believe that she was Totto-Chan.
At Numazu they got on a ship. It was not a big one. But they were so excited that they inspected every corner of the deck touching everything they saw. Soon the sea became rough. Totto-Chan began to feel like vomiting, as did some others. When the ship rocked, one of the older boys stood in the middle of the ship and ran from one side to the other saying “Oops”. It was so funny that the children laughed although they felt seasick. When they came out of the ship, the Oops boy began to feel like vomiting, but all others had recovered from their seasickness.
The spa at Toi was in a quiet, beautiful village, surrounded by wooded hills. After a short rest, the teachers took the children down for swim in the sea. They all wore swimsuits.
The hot spring in the sea was most unusual. It was not enclosed. There was no line separating the hot spring from the rest of the sea. If you crouched down where the hot spring was, the hot water came up to your neck.
It felt lovely like being in a hot bath. The sea shore so deserted, it was as if the students were in their own private beach. They enjoyed the sea-bathing.
When they got back to the house in the evening after staying so long in sea water, their fingers were a mass of wrinkles. Each night tucked into their quilts, they took turns to tell ghost stories. Totto- Chan and the first graders were frightened and they cried. In spite of their tears they would ask, “And then what happened?”
Unlike camping inside the school and the Bravery Test, the 3-day stay at Toi Spa was a real-life experience. There was a forest full of cicadas and a shop where you could buy popsicles. They met a man on the beach who was building a big wooden boat all by himself. It was already boat shaped. The first thing they did in the morning was to run down the beach and see how much more he had done. The man gave Totto-Chan a very long and curly wood shaving.
When they were about go back after the trip, the Headmaster wanted to take a souvenir photograph. The children never had a group photograph and they were happy. The headmaster was ready with the camera. But someone ran to the toilet. Another one had his gym shoes on the wrong feet. When finally all were there, the Headmaster asked if all were ready. One or two were lying on the ground as they were tired of standing for the photograph for so long. Getting them together took a long time. But finally the photograph was taken. With the sea in the background and each one posing according to his/her fancy, the photograph was a treasured possession for each of them. A look at it would bring back all the memories. Totto-Chan never forgot her first happy summer vacation.

എല്ലാ കുട്ടികളും ടൂറിന് റെഡിയായി വന്ന പ്പോൾ ഹെഡ്മാസ്റ്റർ പറഞ്ഞു, അവർ ട്രെയി നിലും കപ്പലിലും യാത്ര ചെയ്യുമെന്ന്. വേറെ നിർദ്ദേശങ്ങളൊന്നും അദ്ദേഹം കൊടുത്തില്ല. പക്ഷേ കുട്ടികൾ ട്രെയിനിൽ നന്നായാണ് പെരുമാറിയത്. അവർ അവരുടെ ബോഗി യിൽ അങ്ങോട്ടും ഇങ്ങോട്ടും ഓടി നടന്നി ല്ല. തൊട്ടടുത്തിരുന്നവരോട് വളരെ പതുക്കെ യാണ് അവർ സംസാരിച്ചത്.

നമാസു എന്ന സ്ഥലത്തു വച്ച് അവർ കപ്പലിൽ കയറി. അതൊരു വലിയ കപ്പൽ ആയിരുന്നില്ല. പക്ഷേ കുട്ടി കൾ വളരെ സന്തോഷത്തിലായിരുന്നു. കപ്പലിന്റെ ഡെക്കിലുള്ള എല്ലാം അവർ തൊട്ടു നോക്കി മനസ്സിലാ ക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചു. പെട്ടെന്ന് കടൽ ക്ഷോഭിച്ചു. ടോട്ടോചാന് ഛർദ്ദിക്കാൻ തോന്നി. മറ്റു പലർക്കും അതേ
അനുഭവം ഉണ്ടായി. കപ്പൽ ഉലയുകയായിരുന്നു, ഒരു സൈഡിൽ നിന്നും മറ്റേ സൈഡിലേക്ക്. അപ്പോൾ ഒരു പ്രായം കൂടിയ കുട്ടി കപ്പലിന്റെ നടുക്കുനിന്ന് “ഹോയ് “എന്നും, പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് അങ്ങോട്ടും ഇങ്ങോട്ടും ഓടു കയായിരുന്നു. കുട്ടികൾക്ക് ഛർദ്ദിക്കാൻ വന്നെങ്കിലും അവർ അവന്റെ ഈ കളി കണ്ട് ചിരിച്ചു. എല്ലാവരും കപ്പ ലിനു പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ മറ്റുള്ളവരുടെ അസ്വസ്ഥത മാറിയെങ്കിലും “ഹോയ് കുട്ടിക്ക് ഛർദ്ദിക്കാൻ വരുന്നു ണ്ടായിരുന്നു റ്റോയിയിലുള്ള സ്പാ ഒരു ശാന്തമായ, സുന്ദരമായ ഗ്രാമത്തിലായിരുന്നു. ആ ഗ്രാമത്തിനുചുറ്റും മരങ്ങൾ നിൽക്കുന്ന കുന്നുകൾ ഉണ്ട്. കുറച്ചു നേരത്തെ വിശ്രമത്തിനു ശേഷം ടീച്ചർ കുട്ടികളെ നീന്താനായി കടലി ലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോയി. അവരെല്ലാവരും സ്വിമ്മിംഗ് സ്യൂട്ടുകൾ ധരിച്ചിരുന്നു.
കടലിലുള്ള ഹോട്ട് സിംഗ് ആയിരുന്നു ഏറ്റവും അസാധാരണമായത്. ഹോട്ട് സിംഗിനെ കടലിന്റെ മറ്റു ഭാഗങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും വേർതിരിക്കുന്ന ഒന്നും തന്നെയില്ലായിരുന്നു. ഹോട്ട് സിംഗ് ഉള്ള സ്ഥലത്തിനടുത്ത് മുട്ടുകുത്തിയിരുന്നാൽ കഴുത്തിൽ വരെ ചൂടുവെള്ളം വരുമായിരുന്നു.
നല്ല ചൂടുവെള്ളത്തിൽ കുളിക്കുന്നപോലെയായിരുന്നു അവിടെ. തീരത്ത് ആൾക്കാർ ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു. അതു കൊണ്ട് തങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു സ്വകാര്യ ബീച്ചുപോലെയാണ് കുട്ടികൾ അതിനെ കണ്ടത്. അവർക്ക് കടലിലെ ആ കുളി നല്ല സന്തോഷം നൽകി. വൈകുന്നേരം അവർ താമസിക്കുന്ന വീട്ടിലെത്തിയപ്പോൾ അധികം നേരം കട ലിലെ ഉപ്പുവെളളത്തിലായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് വിരലുകളിലെല്ലാം ചുളിവുകൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പുതപ്പിനടിയിൽ കിടന്നുകൊണ്ട് ഓരോ രാത്രിയും അവർ ഭൂത കഥകൾ മാറി മാറി പറഞ്ഞു. ടോട്ടോചാനും ഒന്നാം ക്ലാസ്സിലെ മറ്റു വിദ്യാർത്ഥികളും പേടിച്ചു കരഞ്ഞു. എന്നാലും കണ്ണുനീരിന്റെ ഇടയിൽ അവർ ചോദിക്കും. പിന്നീട് എന്തു പറ്റി എന്ന്.
സ്കൂളിൽ ക്യാംപുകളും ധൈര്യപരീക്ഷണവും ഒക്കെ നടത്തുന്നുണ്ടെങ്കിലും, ഈ ദിവസത്തെ ട്രിപ്പ് ശരിക്കും നല്ല ഒരു ജീവിതാനുഭവമായിരുന്നു. നിറയെ പ്രാണികളുള്ള ഒരു കാടും ഒരു കടയും അവരുടെ താമസസ്ഥല ത്തിനടുത്തുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. കടയിൽ നല്ല രസമുള്ള ഐട്ട് കിട്ടുമായിരുന്നു. കടൽതീരത്ത് ഒറ്റക്കിരുന്ന് ഒരു മരബോട്ട് ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന ഒരാളെ അവർ കണ്ടു. ബോട്ടിന്റെ ഷെയ്ക്ക് ആയി രാവിലെ അവർ അതിന്റെ അടു ത്തേക്ക് ഓടുമായിരുന്നു. എത്രമാത്രം പുരോഗതി അതിന് ഉണ്ടായിട്ടുണ്ടെന്നറിയാൻ. ആ മനുഷ്യൻ ടോട്ടോചാ നിന് നീളമുളള ചുരുണ്ട ഒരു മരക്കഷണം കൊടുത്തു(മരം ചിന്തേറിടുമ്പോൾ അത് ചുരുണ്ടു ചുരുണ്ടു വരും).
