Answer:
Robert Baldwin is the protagonist of this play. He lives in a trim little cottage with his wife Martha and his son John and daughter Evie. He is working as the governor of a bank owned by John Gresham. His salary is very low, 60 dollars a week. His son John earns only 30 dollars a week. With this limited income they live reasonably happily.
Suddenly there is a problem in their lives. John Gresham has misappropriated bank money and he is in jail. The bank is closed and Baldwin will have no job. Only Baldwin is the witness for the misappropriation. If he gives his true testimony, John Grdsham will definitely go to jail for a long period. Baldwin is honest and. he has taught his family the importance of honesty. When Baldwin returns home after the arrest of John Gresham, his wife and children rush to him to know the latest news.
Initially his wife and the children tell him that he should say the truth during the trial even if it means jail term for Gresham. But when they . come to know that Gresham has offered him a bribe of 100,000 dollars just to say ‘I don’t remember when some incriminating questions are asked in the court, they change their stance. They try to find out all kinds of loopholes to make Baldwin accept the bribe. Martha, John and Evie do their best to make Baldwin change his mind. But he asserts that he wants to go to his grave clean.
He does love Gresham. He even named his son after him. Even now he remembers how he worked with him for so long. They were boys together. They worked side by side. All this is true, but he is not willing to tell a lie to save his friend and employer even when he is offered a colossal sum of 100,000 dollars.
Baldwin’s honesty is repaid abundantly. Even Gresham is proud of him and he recommends him to Mr Marshall, the President of the Third International. At the end of the play we see Marshall coming to the house of Baldwin and offering him a job at the Third International. We see Baldwin crying in the end. He must have been crying for two reasons – his friend Gresham has confessed his guilt and he will surely be punished. Secondly he is shedding tears of joy in gratitude to God who has amply repaid his honesty. Honesty, Baldwin proves, beyond an iota of doubt, is the best policy.

It seems her mother is very demanding and shameless as she goes on begging.
One day while collecting the soiled clothes forgiving to the washer-man, Nomita sees a letter in the pocket of Ajit. It is torn and crumpled. It is addressed to her and from the postmark it is obvious that Ajit got it some 3 days earlier. But he had not told anything about it. Question 28.
Compare and contrast the attitude of the poet ansi his neighbour on the need for a wall on their boundary. (5)
Answer:
The poet and his neighbour mend the gaps in the wall by walking along the wall on either side and picking up the fallen stones and placing them back on the wall in an effort to mend it. The poet argues that there is no need of a wall in between his estate and that of his neighbour because his area is covered with pine trees and the poet’s area is full of apple trees.
The poet’s apple trees will never go to his area to eat the cones of his pines. The neighbour, however, justifies the need for walls or fences by saying that good fences make good neighbours. There is some traditional wisdom in the argument of the neighbour, although the argument of the poet is more reasonable and logical.

Answer:
HOREGALLUS:
A horegallu is a stone bench on which tired people can rest and regain their energy. Such stones are usually under shady trees. Tired travellers unburden themselves, sit, and talk to some sympathetic listeners. Life is a journey and we are all travellers. Each one of us carries burdens of various sorts. If there is some patient and sympathetic listener, we can unburden ourselves and feel relieved. The horegallu will not solve your problem but it gives you temporary relief.
Today we hear of so many suicides especially of young people. They are driven to such desperate measures because there is nobody who will spend their time to listen to the problems of these men and women. If someone could listen to them and suggest to them some ways out of their predicament, maybe they could be saved. Even if we can’t give suggestions and solutions, merely by listening to their grievances, they will feel relieved and Will think twice before they take extreme measures. Let us do our best to be horegallus so that we listen to the travails of others who will feel relieved just because there is someone to listen to them.

Answer:
Irfan Alam was quite right in asserting “Business can be successful by targeting the bottom of the pyramid.” We can see a good example of this in the Kudumbasree Project in Kerala. Kudumbasree, a community organization of Neighbourhood Groups (NHGs) of women in Kerala, has been recognized as an effective strategy for the empowerment of women in rural as well as urban area. It brings women together from all spheres of life to fight for their rights or for empowerment.
The overall empowerment of women is closely linked to economic empowerment. Women through these NHGs work on a range of issues such as health, nutrition, agriculture, etc. besides income generation activities and seeking micro credit. Kudumbasree differs from conventional programmes in that it perceives poverty not just as the deprivation of money, but also as the deprivation of basic rights. The poor need to find a collective voice to claim these rights.
Kudumbasree was conceived as a joint programme of the Government of Kerala and Nabard implemented through Community Development Societies (CDSs) of Poor Women, serving as the community wing of Local Governments. Kudumbasree is formally registered as the “State Poverty Eradication Mission” (SPEM), a society registered under the Travancore Kochi Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Act 1955.
It has a governing body chaired by the State Minister of LSG. There is A state mission with a field officer in each district. This official structure supports and facilitates the activities of the community network across the state. Kundumbasree has made women aware of the in rights and they are also economically empowered.

My neighbour Mehboob Saithu is a human horegallu. He is never tired of helping the needy. Whenever people in my neighbourhood need any help, they rush to Mehboob because they know he will do whatever he can to help them to find solutions to their problems.
There is a colony near our neighbourhood. It is called Gandhi colony. There are some 150 families residing there. Drinking water has been a problem for most of the people there. The municipality taps are often dry and people have to fetch water from faraway places or they have to buy it from the people who supply it in water tanks. Not everybody can afford to buy water because the tanker people charge heavily for the water they give.
When my good neighbour Mehboob was told of this problem, immediately he made a plan to help the needy people in the colony with drinking water. He has a mini truck. He fitted the truck with two huge tanks. Mehboob has a deep well in his house which has plenty of water throughout the year. He fills the tanks from his well, and then drives to the colony. He has a list of the very poor people in the colony and to them he supplies free drinking water. The people gratefully call Mehboob “Water Ikka”, ‘Ikka’ meaning brother.

He wanted to test the spelling ability of the students in the class. So he dictated ten words to the students who were to write them in their notebooks. Gandhi was not sure of one word. As he was sitting thinking of the right spelling, his teacher came and indicated to him to copy the right spelling from the boy sitting next to Gandhi. But Gandhi refused. The teacher later got angry with him for not copying! It was this kind of honesty that helped Gandhi to become the Father of the Nation.
I n the play “The Hour of Truth” by Percival Wilde, we see how virtuous people will be rewarded by God. Mr. Robert Baldwin works in the bank of Mr. Gresham . who is now in police custody for misappropriation of depositor’s money. He offers Mr. Baldwin, a truthful person, 100000/- dollars as bribe to say three words ‘I don’t remember” at the time of the trial which is going to take place the next day. If Mr Baldwin says those words, Gresham will get acquitted.
Martha is Baldwin’s wife, John is his son and Evie is Ns daughter. When Martha, John and Evie hear of the offer given by Gresham they want Baldwin to act as Gresham wanted and get the 100000 dollars. But Baldwin is not Willing to do it as he “wants to go to his grave clean”.
But Baldwin is rewarded by God for his honesty. We see that in the end, Mr Marshall, the President of the Third National, comes to Baldwin offering him a job at his bank. Mr. Marshall had gone to see Gresham that afternoon. Gresham told Marshall about the offer he had made to Baldwin. Gresham told Marshall that no temptation would make Baldwin do something bad. Marshall was impressed with this testimony and thaf is why he has come with the offer of the job to Baldwin in the Third National.

Question 38.
Imagine that you have been elected ward member. Realizing that your education paved the way for your success, prepare the script of a speech to address the people of your locality.
Answer:
My dear friends,
I am here to thank you for electing me as your Ward Member. Although I contested the election as a Member of the Congress Party, from now on I am a member who will be working for the welfare of all of you irrespective of your political leanings. My aim is to serve the Ward to the best of my ability and to bring to development to this place.
I have never been a good politician. I am sure you elected me because of my educational qualifications and the work I have been doing in the field of education. I have been doing my best to remove illiteracy from our midst and to encourage students to seek higher education. In today’s world success comes to only those who are well educated. Only the well educatl’d can enjoy their life to the fullest.Enjoying does not mean eating and drinking. It is much more than that.
The best gift parents can give their children is education. If you give them money, they will squander it away in questionable pleasures. But if you give them education, you are giving them a valuable treasure that will stand them in good stead all their lives. Thank you once again, fortrusting me. I assure you I shall prove worthy of your trust.

Question 39.
Read the lines from the poem Mother, A Cradle to Hold Me by Maya Angelou.
It is true
I was created in you.
It is also true
That you were created for me.
Lowned your voice.
It was shaped and tuned to soothe me.
Your arms were molded .
Into a cradle to hold me, to rock me.
The scent of your body was the air
Perfumed for me to breathe.
Mother,
Duririg those early, dearest days
I did not dream that you had.
A large life which included me,
For I had a life Which was only you.
I feared if I let you go
You would leave me eternally.
You smiled at my fears, saying
I could not stay in your lap forever.
Without warning you left me,’
But you returned immediately.
But relief did not rest with me easily.
You left again, but again returned.
Each time you re-entered my world.
You brought assurance.
Slowly I gained confidence.
(Hints: soothe-to comfort; Molded shaped: cradile – baby bed; enternal – ever lasting) Now, compare the poem with Any Woman by Katharine Tynan. (Hints: themed message, style, town, poetic devices, etc. (8)
Answer:
The poem “Mother, A Cradle to Hold me” my Maya Angelou, the famous American poet, is a tribute to the Mother. When we are small, our mothers are everything to us. Her arms were made to cradle us and provide for all our needs. At first, we don’t want to be separated from her. As time passes, a mother helps us become more independent. Even in our teenage years, we still love our mother even though we don’t show it well, and we finally come to realize the wisdom she has. This is a great Mother’s Day poem that thanks her for her guidance and unconditional love. No matter our stage of life, whether an infant, young child, teenager, or adult, our mother’s love for us is unconditional. The poem is in simple language. There are fine metaphors.
The poem ‘Any Woman’ by Katharine Tynan speaks of the importance of the woman in the family, She is the pillars of the house. She is the keystone of the arch. She is the roof and walls. She is the fire upon the hearth. Without her, the home would be colder than a stone. The children come to her for love and affection. She is the light of their love. The children could hardly thrive without her support. She is-the one who holds the family together.
No child wants to get away from the close-knit family group. She is all over the house, from the floor to the roof. Nothing happens without her knowledge. She decorates the house and makes the children’s bed cosy and warm. She also protects the children from all dangers. She is the door that guards against all kinds of troubles and tribulations that come to pester the inmates. At the end of the poem, the woman prays to Jesus to spare her life till her children are properly grown up.
The poem has simple language. The entire poem is an exquisite metaphor. The imagery is great. The poem is in rhyme. Except in the first stanza, the rhyme scheme is abab. Between the two poems I prefer Any Woman by Katharine Tynan.
