Usha Chaumer belongs to the Scheduled Caste that worked traditionally as scavengers. Although untouchability is legally abolished, many Indians still consider members of some castes and tribes as untouchables and they try to keep away from them as far as possible. Usha started work when she was 7 years old. She got married when she was only 11. They ate the left-over food items from the houses they scavenged and they wore the old dresses given to them.
