Howard Kelly is a poor boy. He used to sell goods from door to door to pay his way through school. One day he didn’t have enough money to buy food and he was very hungry. He decided, he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk.

Years later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in a specialist to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for consultation. When the doctor came to see the patient, he felt that he knew the woman. It was the woman who had given him milk years ago. He decided to do his best to save her life. He gave her special attention.

After a long struggle, she was cured. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it. Then wrote something on the edge and the bill and it was sent to her room. She was afraid to open it because she thought it might be a huge bill and she will have to struggle for the rest of her life to pay it.

Finally she opened it. She read the following words: “Paid in full with one glass of milk” and it was signed Dr. Howard Kelly. Tears of joy flooded her eyes. She was very happy. She didn’t think that someone whom he helped long time ago would still remember her. She thanked God for enabling people to share his love through their hearts and hands.

The story begins with Ranjit and Aman asking Radha about her swimming skills. Radha was a village girl from Kumaon Hills in UP who had come to visit her aunt and spend her summer vacation. Back at home, she used to swim every day as she lived on the banks of River Sarayu. She did not have any particular style of swimming and this amused Ranjit and Aman. They did not know that she learned swimming even before she learned to walk.

Radha’s aunt asked her sons, Ranjit and Aman, to take Radha to their club. They were not keen on taking her there. But they were afraid to disobey her. So they came up with an excuse that in their club everyone must have a swimming costume for swimming. Radha didn’t have any swimming costume as she swam in her salwar kurta in her village. The boys went as soon as their friends arrived leaving Radha to watch TV with her aunt. Radha hid her sadness from her aunt with hollow laughter and said that she wasn’t interested in going to the club.

Radha was very excited when after class VIII exams her aunt invited her to spend her summer vacation in Delhi. She looked forward to it as she had never been out of her village. Her cousins were almost her age but even after a week she couldn’t get along with them and felt lonely as their backgrounds were different. Her cousins and their friends had different interests. They always discussed computers and video game, listened to pop music and watched western films. Radha felt lost among them but when she heard they were going to swim in the club’s swimming pool, she wanted to go with them. But here also her cousins disappointed her and she cried.

Radha’s uncle. had announced that he would take everyone for a picnic on the banks of the river Yamuna on Saturday. The boys were excited. So was Radha. The boys would call some of their friends to go with them. On the day of the picnic, the weather was pleasant and a cool breeze blew. The place was at the foothill of Shiwalik. After lunch, the grownups got busy with their cards and the kids explored the surrounding. Radha was with them for some time but she felt they were not very keen on having her. So she settled down on a big rock and started reading.

Soon the other kids wore their swimming costumes and went into the water.

By the time they reached the bank, a big crowd had gathered. People pulled them away from the water. Radha was panting, her throat was dry, and she shivered uncontrollably. Someone wrapped her with a blanket and she drank two mugs of steaming hot coffee to gain back her strength. Ranjit came up to her to compliment her on her swimming skills and asked her to teach him to swim the way she did. She swam like a fish. She said she did not know any style of swimming. Ranjit held out his hand to her. Seeing this gesture of love and admiration, Radha’s face glowed with happiness.

Radha is certainly brave and helpful. When she sees Aman getting too close to a big boulder where the current is very fast, she warns him not to swim there as it would be dangerous. But not listening to her warning, he swims there and he is carried away by the swift current and his life is in danger. His brother Ranjit and their friends were shouting to Aman to come back. Radha noticed that Aman was being carried away by the current into the middle of the river. None of the boys dared to jump into the current to save Aman. But Radha jumped quickly into the water. She saw Aman trying hard to swim against the current but the current was too swift for him and he found it was difficult for him to swim against it. Radha didn’t find swimming against the current difficult as she used to do that every day at home. Soon Radha Caught up with Aman who was exhausted. She told him to hold on to her waist and try to paddle slowly.
She carried him with her. With Aman’s weight, it was tough for her to swim against the current but she used all her strength to reach the bank. She saved Aman.

The President’s Award for Bravery Goes to Radha, a Student of Std IX
Delhi: 24 April: The President’s Award for Bravery is bagged by Radha, a Std IX Student, from Kumaon Hills, UP. When Radha completed her Std. VIII, her aunt in Delhi invited her to spend the summer vacation with her in Delhi. Radha was very happy. She had never gone out of her village before. She thought of visiting many tourist attractions in Delhi and also experiencing city life.

Radha’s Aunt has two sons – Ranjit and Aman. They are roughly of the same age with Radha. But since they were brought up in a different background, Radha could hardly mingle with them. Ranjit and Aman had friends from the city. They often came to their house and they spent time discussing computers and video games, listening to pop music and watching western films. Radha felt quite out of place in such a group.

When Ranjit and Aman were going to the club swimming pool Radha’s aunt asked her sons to take Rasha along. But they did not take her because she did not have a swimming costume. She said she used to swim in the Sarayu River in her salwar kurta. She also Idid not know about different styles of swimming called freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. But she had learned to swim before she learnt to walk.

One day her uncle took Radha, Ranjit, Aman and their friends for a picnic on the banks of Yamuna River. The boys got into swimming costumes and began to swim joyfully. Radha was watching them, sitting on a rock with a book in her hand. She soon realised that Aman was getting too close a boulder where the current was swift. She then warned him. But he laughed at her saying that he knew to swim well and how to take care of himself. Soon she heard others screaming and shouting as Aman was caught in the current. None of the boys dared to jump into the current to save Aman. But Radha removed her shoes and jumped into the river and swam towards Aman. Aman was struggling against the current. She reached him and told him to hold on to her waist and paddle with his legs. She soon brought him to safety. In the meantime a crowd had gathered and they pulled Radha and Aman out of water. She was panting. Her throat was dry and she was shivering. Someone covered her with a blanket and her aunt gave her some steaming coffee. She had saved Aman from certain death.

Radha did not know what the various styles of swimming were. But she was an expert swimmer and had the courage to save Aman. She should be a role model for our youngsters.

Invitation to attend Farmer’s Day Celebrations
This year the Agricultural Club of our school is planning to celebrate Chingam 1st as the Farmer’s Day. There will be meeting at 10 o’clock in the school auditorium. The Chairperson of the Irinjalakuda Municipality has kindly agreed to preside over the meeting.

Awards will be given to some selected farmers for their special contribution to the for welfare of the society. After the meeting there will be some entertainment programmes, including a short play, dances, mimicry and popular songs by some of our students. Snacks will be served 10 during the entertainment programme.

In the first stanza, the poet speaks about the hard work of farmers. Their labour brings everyone’s food, the farmer’s food and also he king’s royal food. Farmers bring food to everyone without any discrimination through their hard work. The page in the 3rd line represents soil or land where farmers work. ‘The letters’ on the page are the seeds that are sown by the farmers. Those seeds will be changed into living green, plants, by the sun.

In the second stanza, the poet looks at the farmer as a scholar and his spade is his immortal pen. This spade taught man his first lesson, which is hunger. Hardworking is something that is commanded by God from of heaven. Here the poet says that hard work is a heavenly order. The farmer is obeying this command to work on the soil – and thus he brings food to everyone here.

Clever Carla Summary in English

In the city of Palermo, Italy, there lived a poor farmer and his young daughter Carla. He cultivated grains and fresh vegetables. He sold them at a nearby market. Carla helped him by watering the plants and collecting the grains.

Scene 1: One day the farmer loaded his wagon with grains and hitched up his horse and asked his daughter Carla to wish him luck so that when he returns home in the evening his pockets will be filled with money. Carla wished him luck. She told him before he came back, she would collect the rest of the grains.

Scene 2: The farmer settles in the street to sell his grains. A merchant comes to buy the grains. Seeing the fine grains, the merchant asks the price for “everything”. The farmer fell for his trick and said twenty copper pieces for everything. The deal is done. Then the merchant asks the farmer to give everything, including the wagon and the horse. The farmer refuses to give away his wagon and horse. But the rule said that once a deal is made it is binding on both parties. If there is a disagreement, one has to appear before the judge.

Scene 3: The merchant and farmer go before the judge and the merchant wins. He takes away all the grains along with his wagon and horse. The farmer goes back home disappointed. He explains things to Carla. Carla thinks of an idea to find the merchant and teach him a lesson.

Scene 4: The next day Carla selected a basket full of the best, ripe watermelons that the farmer had ever grown. She went to the market to sell them. She knew it would attract the wicked merchant. As expected he came near her stall and tried to make the same deal but this time Carla outsmarted him. When the merchant tried to buy everything from her, the price she charged in return was everything the merchant had in his hand. A deal was made. The merchant not realising that she would also ask the three rings that he wore on his fingers. When the merchant reluctantly gives the rings to Carla she returns them to him saying that her father did not teach her to cheat or harm anybody.
