Radha noticed that Aman was being carried away by the current into the middle of the river. None of the boys dared to jump into the current to save Aman. But Radha jumped quickly into the water. She saw Aman trying hard to swim against the current but the current was too swift for him and he found it was difficult for him to swim against it. Radha didn’t find swimming against the current difficult as she used to do that every day at home. Soon Radha Caught up with Aman who was exhausted. She told him to hold on to her waist and try to paddle slowly.
She carried him with her. With Aman’s weight, it was tough for her to swim against the current but she used all her strength to reach the bank. She saved Aman.

The President’s Award for Bravery Goes to Radha, a Student of Std IX
Delhi: 24 April: The President’s Award for Bravery is bagged by Radha, a Std IX Student, from Kumaon Hills, UP. When Radha completed her Std. VIII, her aunt in Delhi invited her to spend the summer vacation with her in Delhi. Radha was very happy. She had never gone out of her village before. She thought of visiting many tourist attractions in Delhi and also experiencing city life.
Radha’s Aunt has two sons – Ranjit and Aman. They are roughly of the same age with Radha. But since they were brought up in a different background, Radha could hardly mingle with them. When Ranjit and Aman were going to the club swimming pool Radha’s aunt asked her sons to take Rasha along. But they did not take her because she did not have a swimming costume. She said she used to swim in the Sarayu River in her salwar kurta. She also Idid not know about different styles of swimming called freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. But she had learned to swim before she learnt to walk.
One day her uncle took Radha, Ranjit, Aman and their friends for a picnic on the banks of Yamuna River. The boys got into swimming costumes and began to swim joyfully. Radha was watching them, sitting on a rock with a book in her hand. She soon realised that Aman was getting too close a boulder where the current was swift. She then warned him. But he laughed at her saying that he knew to swim well and how to take care of himself. Soon she heard others screaming and shouting as Aman was caught in the current. None of the boys dared to jump into the current to save Aman. But Radha removed her shoes and jumped into the river and swam towards Aman. Aman was struggling against the current. She reached him and told him to hold on to her waist and paddle with his legs. She soon brought him to safety. In the meantime a crowd had gathered and they pulled Radha and Aman out of water. She was panting. Her throat was dry and she was shivering. Someone covered her with a blanket and her aunt gave her some steaming coffee. She had saved Aman from certain death.
Radha did not know what the various styles of swimming were. But she was an expert swimmer and had the courage to save Aman. She should be a role model for our youngsters.
