On the first day of our village school, one of the boys was found missing. He hid himself in the cellar of the schoolhouse. He was dark and small. He looked different from the other students. He lived on the other side of the mountain. As he was small in size, he was nicknamed Chibi, meaning ‘tiny boy’.
This boy was too afraid of our teacher. He did not learn anything. He was too afraid to make friends with other children. So he was left alone at study time and play time. He was always at the back of the class and at the end of a line.
But Chibi had his own way of passing his time and amusing himself. He would just stare at the top of his desk for a long time. Sometimes he would be gazing at the ceiling. There were many things to interest him: the design on the clothes of the boy sitting next to him, or what he could see through window.
In the playground, he would just close his eyes and listen to the wonderful sounds that came from near and far. He could hold and watch insects and grubs that most of us would not touch or even look at.
Everyone, even the children in the lower classes, called him a slowpoke. He came to school every day. He always brought the same lunch – a ball of rice wrapped in a radish leaf. Even when it rained or stormed, he came walking. He would then cover himself with a raincoat made of zebra grass.
Five years passed. Now they were in the 6th grade, the last class in school. Our new teacher Mr. Isobe was a friendly man with a kind smile. He made us change our way to look at Chibi.
Mr. Isobe often took his class to the hilltop behind the school. He was happy to know that. Chibi knew all the places where the wild grapes and wild potatoes grew. He was amazed that Chibi knew all about the flowers in our class garden.
Mr. Isobe liked Chibi’ black and white drawings and tacked them up on the wall for everyone to see. He had no complaints about Chibi’s handwriting. Only Chibi could read it. Mr Isobe tacked some of Chibi’s writing on the wall. He often spent time with Chibi when no one was around.
When Chibi appeared on the stage at the talent show of that year, nobody could believe his eyes. They were amazed when Mr. Isobe announced that Chibi was going to imitate the cries of crows. Chibi got up on to the stage. First he imitated the cries of newly hatched crows. Then he imitated the cries of mother crow and father crow. He went on to imitate how crows cried early in the morning. He also imitated the sad and happy cries of the crows.
Everybody’s mind was taken to the far mountainside. Chibi came to school from there. Now they could imagine the far and lonely place where Chibi and his family lived. Mr. Isobe then explained how Chibi learned those calls. He left home for school, at dawn and returned at sunset everyday for 6 years.
Everyone of us cried for mistreating Chibi all those long years. Even grownups wiped their tears, saying, “He is wonderful”. Chibi was the only one in our class who has honoured for attendance through all the six years.
Chibi still came to the village to sell the charcoal he and his family made. Nobody called him Chibi now. They called him “Crow Boy”. We still heard his imitation of a happy crow as he returned home along the mountain road.

ഈ കുട്ടിക്ക് ഞങ്ങളുടെ ടീച്ചറെ ഭയമായിരുന്നു. അവൻ ഒന്നും പഠിച്ചില്ല. മറ്റ് കുട്ടികളുമായി സൗഹൃദം സ്ഥാപിക്കാനും അവനു ഭയമായിരുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് പഠനസമയത്തും കളിസമയത്തും – അവൻ തനിച്ചായിരുന്നു. അവൻ എപ്പോഴും ക്ലാസിന്റെ പുറകിലും ഒരു വരിയുടെ അവസാനത്തിലും ആയിരുന്നു.
എന്നാൽ ചിബിക്ക് സമയം കളയാനും രസിക്കാനും തന്റേതായ ചില വഴികൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവൻ വളരെ നേരം തന്റെ മേശയുടെ മുകളിൽ തന്നെ നോക്കി നിൽക്കും. ചിലപ്പോൾ അവൻ മേൽക്കൂരയിലേക്ക് നോക്കും. അവന് താൽപര്യമുണർത്തുന്ന നിരവധി കാര്യങ്ങളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവന്റെ അടുത്തിരിക്കുന്ന ആൺകുട്ടിയുടെ വസ്ത്രങ്ങളുടെ രൂപകൽപ്പന, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവന് ജനാലയിലൂടെ കാണാൻ കഴിയുന്ന മറ്റു കാര്യങ്ങൾ.

ആ വർഷത്തെ ടാലന്റ് ഷോയിൽ ചിബി വേദിയിൽ പ്രത്യ ക്ഷപ്പെട്ടപ്പോൾ ആർക്കും അവരുടെ കണ്ണുകളെ വിശ്വസി ക്കാനായില്ല. ചിബി കാക്കകളുടെ കരച്ചിൽ അനുകരി ക്കാൻ പോവുകയാണെന്ന് മിസ്റ്റർ ഐസോബ് പ്രഖ്യാ പിച്ചപ്പോൾ അവർ അമ്പരന്നു. ചിബി സ്റ്റേജിലേക്ക് കയറി. ആദ്യം അവൻ പുതുതായി വിരിഞ്ഞ കാക്കക ളുടെ കരച്ചിൽ അനുകരിച്ചു. പിന്നെ അമ്മ കാക്കയുടെയും അച്ഛൻ കാക്കയുടെയും കരച്ചിൽ അനുകരിച്ചു. അതിരാവിലെ കാക്കകൾ കരയുന്നത് അവൻ അനുകരിച്ചു. കാക്കളുടെ സങ്കടകരവും സന്തോഷകരവു മായ കരച്ചിലും അവൻ കാണിച്ചു തന്നു.
അവന്റെ ഈ പരിപാടി എല്ലാവരുടെയും മനസ്സ് ദൂരെയുള്ള മലഞ്ചെരുവിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുപോയി. അവിടെ നിന്നാണ് ചിബി സ്കൂളേക്ക് വന്നിരുന്നത്. ചിബിയും കുടുംബവും താമസിച്ചിരുന്ന വിദൂരവും ഏകാന്ത വുമായ സ്ഥലം ഇപ്പോൾ അവർക്ക് സങ്കൽപ്പിക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു. ചിബി എങ്ങനെയാണ് കാക്കയുടെ ആ ശബ്ദങ്ങൾ പഠിച്ചതെന്ന് മിസ്റ്റർ ഐസോബ് വിശദീകരിച്ചു. അവൻ അതിരാവിലെ വീട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് സ്കൂളി ലേക്ക് പോകും. സൂര്യസ്തമയത്തോടെ മടങ്ങും. 6 വർഷമായി എല്ലാ ദിവസവും അവൻ ഇതാണ് ചെ കൊണ്ടിരുന്നത്.
ആ നീണ്ട വർഷങ്ങളിൽ ചിബിയോട് മോശമായി പെരു മാറിയതിന് ഞങ്ങളെല്ലാം കരഞ്ഞു. മുതിർന്നവർ പോലും അവരുടെ കണ്ണുനീർ തുടച്ചു. “അവൻ ഒരു അത്ഭുതമാ ണ്.” എന്ന് അവർ പറഞ്ഞു. ഞങ്ങളുടെ ക്ലാസ്സിൽ ആറ് വർഷവും ഹാജരിനായി ആദരിച്ചത് ചിബിയെ മാത്രമാ യിരുന്നു.
താനും കുടുംബവും ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ കരി വിൽക്കാൻ ചിബി ഇപ്പോഴും ഗ്രാമത്തിലെത്തും. അവനെ ഇപ്പോൾ ആരും ചിബി എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നില്ല. അവർ അവനെ “കോ ബോയ്’ എന്ന് വിളിച്ചു. മലയോര പാതയി ലൂടെ വീട്ടിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങുമ്പോൾ സന്തോഷവാനായ ഒരു കാക്കയുടെ അനുകരണം അവൻ നടത്തുന്നത് ഞങ്ങൾ ഇപ്പോഴും കേൾക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
