The Magic of Cartoons: Joseph Barbera’s story
Hello everyone!
This is Nimmy. Welcome to this podcast episode featuring the famous cartoon artist
Joseph Barbera.
We’re thrilled to have Joseph Barbera with us today!
As you know, Joseph Barbera, the legend of the animation industry, is the genius behind characters like Tom and Jerry. In his memoir, ‘The Ink and the Melody,’ he takes us on a fascinating journey, sharing captivating stories of his meeting with Michael Jackson. Join us as we delve into the vivid tapestry of Joseph Barbera’s life, illuminating his incredible contributions to the world of animation.
A hearty welcome, Joseph Barbera! You are a true legend of animation. Your creative brilliance has entertained millions around the world, including myself. Can you share your experience of creating the Tom and Jerry series?
The Tom and Jerry series was a mix of dreams and creativity for me and William Hanna. We imagined a fun rivalry between a cat and a mouse, full of jokes, clever moves, and awesome animation. This idea became the beloved ‘Tom and Jerry’ series.
We have heard of your meetings with the legendary M J. Can you share that experience?
While working as creative consultant for the Tom and Jerry movie, I had some meetings with the King of Pop himself. I wanted him to sing for the movie.
Did it work out?
Unfortunately, no. For some reason, our top executives were not interested.
M J is a fan of cartoons. Could you tell us about the time you sketched for him?
Yeah, M J really loves cartoons. At one of our meetings, he asked me if I scripted all the Tom and Jerry cartoons. I told him I drew them. He brought me some paper. I started sketching one of my favourite cartoons, ‘Bowling Alley Cat’. Michael looked over my shoulder, whispering in his high, thin voice, “Wow!” and “Wow!” He was really excited.
Could you tell us about the time when Jackson gave you his autograph?
When I gave him autographed sketches of Tom and Jerry, I asked him for his autograph.
He wrote a rather lengthy note and asked me to read it aloud. His words were truly touching. This was what he wrote:
“To my hero of yesterday, today, and tomorrow, with many thanks for all the many cartoon friends you gave me as a child. They were all I had. — Michael.” It was truly a special moment for me.
In your memoir, you mention that M J is laid-back and courteous. How would you assess his personality?
Michael Jackson is kind and genuine, humble, despite his fame. To me, he was always polite and appreciative, and he had a gentle way of speaking. He is undoubtedly a true gentleman.

THE GOD OF CRICKET – SACHIN TENDULKAR’S STORY
Hello everyone!
This is Riya. Welcome to this podcast episode featuring the famous Indian Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. ”
We’re thrilled to have Sachin Tendulkar with us today!
As you know, Sachin Tendulkar, known as the God of Cricket in India, is the one who has inspired thousands of the youths to turn to cricket for enjoyment and also as a profession. In his famous Autography titled “Playing It My Way”, Sachin Tendulkar takes us on a fascinating journey, captivating us with his successes and failures in his career. He speaks of his role models and how he overcame moments of doubts arid crises. Sachin has really made the game of cricket very popular especially among the youths of today. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. Hailed as the world’s most prolific batsman of all time, he is the all-time highest run-scorer in both ODI and Test cricket with more than 18,000 runs and 15,000 runs, respectively.
A hearty welcome, Sachin Tendulkar.
You are a true hero of the youths. Your performances on the cricket field have thrilled millions around the world, especially in India. I too am a great fan of yours.
Can you share your experiences in your journey to become the God of Cricket?
I took up cricket at the age of eleven. I made my Test match debut on 15 November 1989 against Pakistan in Karachi at the age of sixteen. I owe a lot of gratitude to my father, Ramesh Tendulkar, my brother Ajit and my coach Achrekar Sir. Achrekar Sir would put a one-rupee coin on the top of the stumps, and the bowler who dismissed me would get the coin. If I completed the session without getting dismissed, he would give me the coin. I consider the 13 coins I won among my most prized possessions.
We have heard that you have also faced challenges and doubts, and some critics even questioned your abilities. How did you deal with them?
What you have heard is right. I also had challenges and doubts. Some critics even questioned my abilities when I failed to score in some matches. But I chose to silence them with my unwavering focus and sheer determination. I embraced the struggle as an opportunity for growth, never shying away from hard work or relenting in my pursuit of excellence.
What is your biggest achievement?
I think I am the only player to have scored one hundred international centuries. I was the first batsman to score a double century in an ODI. I am the only player to complete more than 30,000 runs in international cricket. The Government of India honoured me in 2014 by conferring upon me Bharat Ratna – India’s highest civilian award. More than all these, what I value most is the love and affection I get from my fellow citizens.
Do you have any message for our listeners?
Be sincere and truthful in whatever you do. With determination, hard work and will to succeed you can overcome any obstacle on your way. Don’t be disappointed by adverse criticism or setbacks. I Was greatly impressed by the story of the Scottish King Bruce and the Spider. When he was defeated 6 times by the English King, Bruce ran away into a forest. One day as he was sitting under a tree, brooding over his failure, he saw a spider trying to weave its web from one end of the cave to another. The spider jumped to the other end to connect the web. It failed. Again it jumped, again it failed. 6 times it failed. Only on the 7th attempt the spider succeeded and it weaved the web. This inspired Bruce. He went back, reorganised the army and defeated the English army. So, don’t be afraid of failures!
Thank you, Sachin Tendulkar, for spending some of your valuable time with us. Continue inspiring the people by telling them to dream high and work hard for achieving their dreams.
This is Riya signing off.
