(You have already read the story of Parvathy who loved the fields, the trees and the plants. The following story is of two kids who go to feed the animals on a farm. Let’s see what happens.)

One day Bill invited his friend, Meg, to visit his Grandad’s farm. Bill told him that Grandad needed help on his farm. The kids went to the farm. Grandad gave the kids some job to do. He asked them to peel the ears of corn and then help him sow the seeds. The kids were very happy to do the work.

Later Grandad told them to help him feed the animals if they were not tired. They said they were not tired and they were ready to help. They fed the sheep and the geese. Grandad had all kinds of animals on the farm. The kids went with the Grandad to collect hay for the cows. Then Grandad said he also had a collection of bees. They need not feed the bees but they should not disturb them.

But the kids went near the bees secretly. Grandad did not notice it. Bill stepped on a log and peeped into the hive and said they were sleeping. But the bees were not actually sleeping. Bill fell off the log. The bees were disturbed and they flew after Bill and Meg. The kids ran fast. But the bees flew faster. They came near the kids. Then the kids saw a stream. Bill asked Meg to jump into it and they both jumped into the stream.

The bees flew back to their hive. The stream was not deep. It saved the kids from the angry bees. Grandad helped the kids to get out of the stream. Grandad then told the kids that they could feed the animals and help them but not to disturb them. The kids apologized. They were wet but they were happy.

പിന്നീട് അവർക്ക് ക്ഷീണമില്ലെങ്കിൽ അവിടെയുള്ള മൃഗങ്ങൾക്ക് തീറ്റ കൊടുക്കാൻ തന്നെ സഹായി ക്കാൻ അദ്ദേഹം കുട്ടികളോട് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. തങ്ങൾ ക്ഷീണിതരല്ല എന്നും തീറ്റകൊടുക്കാൻ റെഡിയാ ണെന്നും അവർ പറഞ്ഞു. ആദ്യം അവർ ആടുകൾക്കും പാത്തകൾക്കും തീറ്റ കൊടുത്തു. അപ്പൂപ്പന് എല്ലാ വിധത്തിലുള്ള മൃഗങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. കുട്ടികൾ അപ്പൂപ്പന്റെ കൂടെ പശുക്കൾക്ക് കൊടുക്കാ നുള്ള വൈക്കോൽ കൊണ്ടുവരാൻ പോയി. അപ്പോൾ അപ്പൂപ്പൻ പറഞ്ഞു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ കൃഷിയിടത്ത് തേനീച്ചകളുടെ ഒരു ശേഖരം ഉണ്ടെന്ന്. അവർ തേനീച്ചകൾക്ക് തീറ്റകൊടുക്കേണ്ട, പക്ഷേ അവയെ ശല്യം ചെയ്യരുത്.

പക്ഷേ ആ കുട്ടികൾ അപ്പൂപ്പനറിയാതെ തേനീച്ചകളുടെ അടുത്തേക്കു പോയി. ഒരു തടിക്കഷണത്തിൽ കയറിനിന്നുകൊണ്ട് ബിൽ തേനീച്ച കൂട്ടിലേക്ക് ഉളിഞ്ഞു നോക്കി. അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു. തേനീച്ചകൾ ഉറങ്ങു കയാണെന്ന്. പക്ഷേ തേനീച്ചകൾ ഉറങ്ങുകയായിരുന്നില്ല. ബിൽ തടിക്കഷണത്തിൽ നിന്നും താഴേക്കു വീണു. തേനീച്ചകൾ പരിഭ്രമിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ബില്ലിന്റേയും മെഗിന്റേയും പുറകേ പാഞ്ഞു. കുട്ടികൾ വേഗ ത്തിൽ ഓടിയെങ്കിലും തേനീച്ചകൾ സ്പീഡിൽ പറന്ന് അവർക്കടുത്തെത്തി. കുട്ടികൾ ഒരു ചെറിയ നദി കണ്ടു. ബിൽ മെഗിനോടു പറഞ്ഞു അതിലേക്കു ചാടാൻ. അവർ രണ്ടുപേരും അതിലേക്കു ചാടി.

Stanza 2: The writer writes and the poet sings. The craftsmen make beautiful things. The doctor heals the sick and the lawyer pleads in the court. The miner digs the ground to take out precious things. But it is the farmer who feeds all of them.

Her name was Parvathi. She was called Paru by the neighbours and the people around. There were paddy fields all around her house. She loved the fields, the trees and the plants. She cared for all the living things around her. Paru’s mother had died of an uncommon disease years ago. Paru really missed her mother very much. She often remembers what her mother told her: “Nature is our mother.” Paru’s father often consoled her by saying, “Never think Amma is gone. She is with us.” Paru’s grandmother also did whatever she could to make her happy. She followed Paru like a shadow. Paru loved her grandmother very much. She called her Echuvamma.

One bright day, Paru’s father went on a journey to a place far away. Paru decided to go to the paddy fields with her grandmother. When she told the grandmother of her desire, she readily agreed. They went to the fields.

They stood at the edge of the field and looked out at the vast fields. The fields were covered with muddy water. A warm breeze made ripples on the surface. The air was alive with the sounds of birds. Some men and women were planting the paddy seedlings. They were humming an old folk song. Paru asked her grandmother if they could join the farmers. Paru held her grandmother’s hand and they went into the field.

They joined the farmers in planting the seedlings. The farmers were glad to see them. They became more energetic. Paru soon saw that Echuvamma was tired. She asked her grandmother if she needed an umbrella. Grandmother did not want any umbrella. Paru held her grandmother’s hand and they walked through the field. The sun was getting hot. Paru was sweating. She then told Paru that she should go home. If she continued staying in the sun Paru might catch cold. The grandmother was used to the heat, but not Paru. But Paru said she wanted to stay with her grandmother. Her grandmother lovingly called her a naughty girl and she was always like that. They continued walking.

Standing in the hot sun, the grandmother talked about farmers and their methods of farming. She told Paru that the farmers were dear to them because their hearts were filled with love. She added: “Leaves and dead insects decay in the soil. It is good manure for plants.” She was silent for some time and then she continued with sadness in her voice: “The paddy fields are gradually disappearing these days.” She took a bunch of paddy plants and held it close to her chest. She then started a melodious folk song.

The sweet song echoed in the field. Paru was enjoying the song. Suddenly she remembered her father. She looked towards the home to see if her father had come back. She knew that he would not allow his old mother to stand in the hot sun for long. Echuvamma was 68, but her spirits were strong. Echuvamma was again busy with the work. Soon she felt a mild touch on her shoulder. It was Paru’s father. He told her that it was getting too hot and if she continued staying in the sun she would be totally tired. He wanted her and Paru go home with him. Echuvammna looked at him smilingly and told him that the farm was her home and she was quite fine there.

The day’s experience moved Paru deeply. She learned many things. She saw the news ways of farming. She learned about the importance of farmers. She felt the warmth of Mother Earth under her feet. For a moment she thought of her mother. She felt her absence. She lay on the ground like a child in its mother’s lap.

നല്ല തെളിച്ചമുള്ള ഒരു ദിവസം. പാറുവിന്റെ അച്ഛൻ ദൂരെയുള്ള ഒരു സ്ഥലത്തേക്കു പോയി. അമ്മൂമ്മയേയും കൂട്ടി പാടത്തുപോകാം എന്ന് പാറു തീരുമാനിച്ചു. അമ്മൂമ്മയും തയ്യാറായി. അവർ പാട ത്തേക്കു പോയി.

ഒരു പാടത്തിന്റെ വക്കിൽ നിന്നുകൊണ്ട് അവർ ആ പാടശേഖരങ്ങളെ നിരീക്ഷിച്ചു. പാടത്ത് നിറയെ വെള്ളമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ആകാശത്തിൽ നിന്നും പക്ഷികളുടെ ശബ്ദം കേൾക്കാം. കുറച്ചു ആണുങ്ങളും പെണ്ണുങ്ങളും ഞാറു നടുകയായിരുന്നു. അവർ ഒരു പഴയ നാടൻ പാട്ടുമൂളുന്നുണ്ട്. അവരുടെ കൂടെ കൂടാമോ എന്ന് പാറു അമ്മൂമ്മയോടു ചോദിച്ചു. അമ്മൂമ്മയുടെ കൈക്കു പിടിച്ച് പാറുവും അമ്മൂമ്മയും പാടത്തേക്കിറങ്ങി.

നല്ല വെയിലത്തു നിന്നുകൊണ്ട് അമ്മൂമ്മ കൃഷിക്കാരെപ്പറ്റിയും അവരുടെ കൃഷി രീതികളെപ്പ റ്റിയും സംസാരിച്ചു. അവർ പാറുവിനോടു പറഞ്ഞു, കൃഷിക്കാർ അവർക്ക് ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടവരാണ്. കാരണം അവരുടെ ഹൃദയം നിറയേ സ്നേഹമാണെന്ന്. അവർ കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്തു, “ഇലകളും ചത്തജീവികളും മണ്ണിൽ ലയിച്ചു ചേരുന്നു. ചെടികൾക്ക് നല്ല വളമാണത്. കുറച്ചു നേരത്തെ മൗനത്തിനു ശേഷം അവർ ദുഃഖ ത്തോടെ തുടർന്നു, “നെൽവയലുകൾ ക്രമേണ ഇല്ലാതായിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്.” അവർ കുറച്ചു ഞാറു കൾ എടുത്ത് നെഞ്ചോടു ചേർത്തുവച്ചിട്ട് ഒരു ഈണമുള്ള നാടൻപാട്ടു പാടാൻ തുടങ്ങി.

മധുരമുള്ള ആ പാട്ട് വയലിൽ പ്രതിധ്വനിച്ചു. പാറു ആ പാട്ട് ആസ്വദിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. പെട്ടെന്ന് അവൾ അച്ഛനെ ഓർത്തു. അവൾ വീടിന്റെ ദിശയിലേക്കു നോക്കി, അച്ഛൻ തിരിച്ചെത്തിയോ എന്നറിയാൻ. അവൾക്കറിയാമായിരുന്നു തന്റെ അമ്മയെ അധികം നേരം വെയിലത്തു നിർത്താൻ അദ്ദേഹം സമ്മതിക്കില്ല എന്ന്. എച്ചുവമ്മക്ക് 68 വയസ്സായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ അവരുടെ ഉത്സാഹത്തിന് ഒരു കുറവും ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു. എച്ചുവമ്മ വീണ്ടും ജോലിയിൽ വ്യാപൃതയായി. പെട്ടെന്ന് തന്റെ തോളിൽ ആരോ തൊടു ന്നതായി അവർക്കു തോന്നി. പാറുവിന്റെ അച്ഛനായിരുന്നു അത്. അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു, വെയിൽ കൂടിക്കൊ ണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണെന്നും കൂടുതൽ നേരം വെയിലത്തു നിന്നാൽ അവർക്ക് ക്ഷീണം വരുമെന്നും.

അമ്മയും, പാറുവും തന്റെ കൂടെ വീട്ടിലേക്കു വരണം എന്നായിരുന്നു അയാളുടെ ആഗ്രഹം. പുഞ്ചിരിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് എച്ചുവമ്മ തന്റെ മകനെ നോക്കി, എന്നിട്ട് പറഞ്ഞു, വയൽ അവരുടെ വീടാണെന്നും അവർക്ക് സുഖമാണെന്നും.

ആ ദിവസത്തെ അനുഭവം പാറുവിനെ അഗാധമായി സ്പർശിച്ചു. അവൾ പലതും പഠിച്ചു. പുതിയതരം കൃഷി രീതികളെപ്പറ്റി അവൾ മനസ്സിലാക്കി. കൃഷിക്കാരുടെ പ്രാധാന്യം അവൾ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞു. ഭൂമിയമ്മയുടെ സ്നേഹം കാലിനടിയിൽ അവൾക്കനുഭവപ്പെട്ടു. ഒരു നിമിഷത്തേക്ക് അവൾ സ്വന്തം അമ്മയെ ഓർത്തു. അമ്മ യുടെ അഭാവം അവൾക്കനുഭവപ്പെട്ടു. ഒരമ്മയുടെ മടി യിൽ എന്ന പോലെ അവൾ നിലത്തു കിടന്നു.

a) Once there was a tree. There was also a little boy. Every day the boy came to the tree which was his close friend.
ഒരിക്കൽ ഒരിടത്ത് ഒരു മരമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവിടെ ഒരു ചെറിയ കുട്ടിയും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. എല്ലാ ദിവ സവും ആ കുട്ടി മരത്തിനടുത്തു വരും. ആ മരം അവന്റെ ഏറ്റവും അടുത്ത സുഹൃത്തായിരുന്നു.

b) He would collect the leaves from the tree and make them into crowns and play “King of the Forest”.

d) The boy replied, “I am too big to climb and play. I want to buy things and have fun. Can you give me some money?”
കുട്ടി പറഞ്ഞു, “ഞാനിപ്പോൾ വലുതായി. എനിക്കിനി മരത്തിൽ കയറി കുട്ടികളെപ്പോലെ കളിക്കാ നൊന്നും പറ്റില്ല. എനിക്ക് കുറച്ചു സാധനങ്ങൾ വാങ്ങി അവ വച്ചുകളിക്കണം. എനിക്കു കുറച്ചു പണം തരാമോ?

a) The tree said she had no money. She had only leaves and fruits. She asked him to take her fruits and sell them in the city. The boy climbed up, gathered her fruits, and carried them, away. The tree was happy.

The poem is about those who are far away from their loved ones. Vikram Seth sympathizes with the lonely feeling of those who are living alone. They are far away from their loved ones at different places.

Life is easy and more joyful when one stays with those who love and care for them. A person feels happier when living with his loved ones at a place where he was born and brought up. That place is familiar to him. But sometimes a family can’t live together. One cannot always stay with his loved ones or in their comfort zones. At times one has to leave the people and the place he loves, either forever or for a certain period. In the nights they sleep alone with nobody on their left or right side. And above them there is only emptiness. And they feel lonely and sad.

In the second stanza, the poet sympathizes with them and asks them not to feel lonely and not to consider themselves alone. He says that the entire world is by their side and shares their pains and sorrows. They are not the only ones suffering from separation. There are many who are experiencing the same situation of life. Separation is a part of life. Some separations are temporary, just for one or two nights. But some are permanent as when somebody dies and goes away forever.

The poet in the 2nd stanza goes on to say that there is a saying that when a person dies, they take the form of a star. That is why the poet is asking the person not to feel alone and insecure because when the person feels that way, they should look up at the stars to ensure that they are not alone. The person they are missing is right there watching them from above. Finally, when you realize the person you are missing is near you, you feel a lot better and you are able to sleep properly.

This poem has only two stanzas. Each stanza has four lines. The 3rd line rhymes with the first and the fourth line with the second. The poem acts as a balm to the souls who are unable to sleep properly because of their loneliness. The poem helps in creating inner peace for such people.

തന്നെ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നവരുടേയും പരിചരിക്കുന്നവരുടേയും കൂടെ താമസിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് ജീവിതം കൂടു തൽ സുഖകരമാകുന്നത്. താൻ ജനിച്ചു വളർന്ന നാട്ടിൽ തന്നെ സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നവരുടെ കൂടെ ജീവിക്കു മ്പോഴാണ് കൂടുതൽ സന്തോഷമുണ്ടാകുന്നത്. ആ സ്ഥലം അയാൾക്കു സുപരിചിതമാണ്. പക്ഷേ പല പ്പോഴും ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിലുള്ളവർക്ക് ഒരുമിച്ചു താമസിക്കാൻ പറ്റാത്ത അവസ്ഥയുണ്ടാകുന്നു. അവർക്ക് തങ്ങളുടെ സുരക്ഷിത സ്ഥാനങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നും അകന്നു ജീവിക്കേണ്ടി വരുന്നു. ചിലപ്പോൾ ഈ സ്ഥിതി കുറച്ചു സമയത്തേക്കായിരിക്കാം. പക്ഷേ ചിലപ്പോൾ എന്നത്തേക്കുമായിരിക്കും. രാത്രികളിൽ അവർക്ക് ഒറ്റക്ക് ഉറങ്ങേണ്ടി വരുന്നു. അവരുടെ ഇടത്തോ വലത്തോ ആരുമില്ല. അവർക്കു മുകളിൽ ശൂന്യതമാത്രം. അപ്പോൾ അവർക്ക് ഏകാന്തയും ദുഃഖവും അനുഭവപ്പെടുന്നു.
