The shuttle commander chooses Meteor for the mission. All other mice are surprised at the choice of
the commander as Meteor was a tiny mouse, much smaller and weaker than them.

When the shuttle returns to the earth. Meteor is declared a hero. He is given a brand-new uniform, and an official title – Mousetronaut. All the astronauts cheer and applaud the tiny mouse who saved the mission from a disaster.

My name is Mathew. I want to tell you a story about a friend of mine. His name is Simon. He joined my school last year. I remember his first day very well.

When I came to the door of my classroom, Simon’s mum gave me a big smile. She told me she was happy to see me and asked Simon to say Hello to me. But Simon turned away and looked at the ground.

Our teacher told us that Simon would be joining our class that year. He would take part in most of our lessons. Sometimes he would get help from a special teacher also.

I thought Simon would like our school much. It is really a great school, except for a girl named Hettie. I call her Horrible Hettie. She always pushed her way to the front of the queue at lunch. She would say she was next when it was someone else’s turn. She would then make a horrible face.

Every day after taking our lunch my friends and I went out to the school yard and make up new fun games. On Simon’s first day I asked him if he wanted to join us. But he wanted to be on his own.

As time passed, I noticed that Simon acted differently from the other students in the class. He would often get upset by something very small, like someone bumping into him by accident. No one knew why he was so and what upset him. He liked to arrange his books and pencils on his desk the same way every day. He did not like when anything changed.

Sometime he got upset about the school bell ringing or moving from his seat. As he was different from others, I stopped asking him to take part in games. Sometimes I was annoyed when the teacher tried to make him join in. I was not sure if I wanted a friend like Simon.

Then the big school trip to the funfair came. All the students had to pair up with someone sit with on the bus. The teacher suggested I should pair up with Simon. So we sat together. Simon took out his sandwiches. When I asked him if he liked sandwiches he asked me the same question and gave me his lunchbox to me to share the sandwiches. I thanked him. He was busy looking out of the window.

Later that day Simon and I were waiting in the queue for our ice-cream. Horrible Hettie marched over to the ice-cream van. “I’m next” she said in a mean voice. She pushed her way in front of us to the top of the queue. Simon shouted “NO!” Hettie got such a fright her pigtails flew up in the air! She quickly turned around ran off. I thanked Simon. He just looked up at the light.

After that I always asked Simon if he wanted to have lunch with me or play a game during break time. Some days he joined. But on other days he wanted to be on his own.

The other boys and girls soon learned to understand Simon better. Sometimes he acted a little different from us. He did not have much to say. But he was just like the others in our school. We learned a big lesson from Simon. Only Horrible Hettie would leave out someone because they were different from us.
