The battle of the gods and demons began in the evening. The roaring storm, the pouring rain, the bludgeoning thunder and lightning and the black clouds all took their part. The Ganges was furious and one could hear nature’s screams, sighs and groans everywhere. In one of the river side houses of Chandernagore, an endless verbal battle was going on between Sharat and his wife Kiran about her staying in the house. Kiran fell seriously ill making everyone in her native village terribly anxious. The whole village advocated for a change necessary for her and to be taken to her own home. But Sharat and his mother gave more importance to their darling than the wisdom of the village.

Answer:
Pablo Neruda is a Chilean poet, diplomat and politician. ‘Poetry’ is a short poem in which Neruda analyses. the mechanism of composing poetry. He explains how inspiration leads to imagination which finally results in creation.

The poet says that poetry has arrived in search of him and it was just a spontaneous process. He does not know its origin. The first line the poet deciphered appeared to be without substance and pure nonsense. Then the heaven was opened. The choicest words flowed from him. Strange thoughts, palpitating plantations, shadows perforated- all he experienced. Suddenly the poet felt himself as a part of the great universe. He wandered with the stars and his heart broke lose in the wind.

The poet uses many images like ‘branches of night’, ‘forgotten wings’, ‘palpitating plantations’, ‘wings’, ‘shadow perforated’ etc. to put across sublime thoughts to the readers. The expression ‘poetry arrived’ is an example of personification.

12 – 16. Read the story given below and answer the questions that follow. Each question carries one score. (5 × 1 = 5)

British cosmologist Stephen William Hawking was born in England on Jan. 8, 1942 – 300 years to the day after the death of the astronomer Galileo Galilei. He attended University College, Oxford, where he studied physics, despite his father’s urging to focus on medicine. Hawking went on to Cambridge to research cosmology, the study of the universe as a whole.

In early 1963, just on his 21st birthday, Hawking was diagnosed with motor neuron disease. He was not expected to live more than two years. Yet, Hawking defied the odds, not only attaining his Ph.D. but also forging new roads into the understanding of the universe in the decades since.

As the disease spread, Hawking became less mobile and began using a wheelchair. Talking grew more challenging, and; in 1985, an emergency tracheotomy caused his total loss of speech. A speech-generating device constructed at Cambridge, combined with a software program, served as his electronic voice, allowing Hawking to select his words by moving the muscles in his cheek.

The old banyan tree was the favourite place of the boy in his grandfather’s house. The tree was older than the grandfather. During the spring season the tree was full of small red figs. The tree became the noisiest place on the road because all kind of birds came there. A small grey squirrel was the boy’s first friend at the tree. At first it showed angry at the boy. But later they became friends and the squirrel even delved into the boy’s pocket to fing whatever he wants.

Half way up the tree the boy had built a small platform on which he would spend the afternoons. He used to sit there for reading. Sitting there he could see the world around. One day the boy witnessed a memorable incident from that spot. It was an April afternoon. In order to cool them off a cobra and mongoose came to the scene. They came face to face in bright sunshine. The cobra was long and it could move swiftly and strike with the speed of light. His sharp fangs were full of venom. The mongoose was three feet long fighter, clever and aggressive When the cobra spread his hood, the long hair on the body of the mongoose stood up.

All these preparation for a fight there was watched by a crow and a myna. The cobra Swayed side to side compelling the mongoose to make a false move But the mongoose fixed his look at a point just below the cobra’s hood. The fangs of the cobra came down so speedly and everybody thought that the mongoose was the victim. But the little mongoose evaded so smartly. He also bit at the back of the corba from where blood drops glistened. All the attacks of the cobra were in vain.

All the time the mongoose leave away from the fangs. In the amidst of the fight very accidentally the cobra whipped at the head of the ‘crow and it lay still at a distance. As the fight continues, the cobra weakened but the mongoose was charged up. The cobra tried to coil the mongoose. But he smartly escaped from that. The little fellow hung grimly on until the snake had ceased to struggle. Then he dragged the cobra into the bushes. The grandfather bought a white rat and it became very darling to everyone.

The boy used to take it to the banyan tree. and It would play around the roots branches and developed a friendship with a grey squirrel. They used to go and play toge her. One day grandmothers knit- ting was missing. The boy found a hole in the banyan tree which was filled with knitting. On further inspection three baby squirrels were found in the wool bed. All of them were white in colour. How can the grey squirrel have white babies? It was a puzzling question. According to grandfather the white rat may be their father.

It can indicate the values that we imbibe in our lives that would remain the best investment forever.
It was on the second day of the narrator’s voyage, he noticed that one of the pas- sengers was watching him closely.
As he was not interested in a conversation with him at that time, he ignored him. The following afternoon the narrator saw him again. Urged by his wife, he approached the narrator. The narrator could not reveal the identity of the fellow voyagers.

Mr. John told the narrator that he was a solicitor by profession and was the director of a charitable organization devoted to the rehabilitation of derelict adolescents. That had been their first visit to America to visit similar institutions in New England. Curiously the narrator enquired why he was attracted to social work. As a reply to it veils parted from his mind. He reminded that he was none other than the young man whose life the narrator had saved. He was an orphan, worked as a clerk in a London solicitor’s office.

As he was friendless he joined in the company of bad people and lost all his savings betting on horses. He took some money from the office safe for a final gamble. But his last resort also failed. Terrified of the prosecu- tion that must follow he tried to commit suicide. But the timely intervention of the doctor, landlady and sergeant helped him to save himself. The doctor came. forward with his minor comtribution of seven pounds and ten shillings to put back in the office safe. The sergeant promised to make no report of the case. The landlady offered him a month’s free board. Recollecting those incidents the narrator felt that it was the finest act he had ever done or it was the best invest- ment he had ever made.
