Eve since man first walke! on ne earth he has suffered from disease. People have tried to fight disease in many ways by taking special herbs, by avoiding cer tain foods, and even by practising magic Yet all the time they were doing all these things they did not know how disease was caused Today we know that it is caused by very small living things which we call germs.
Germs harm us when they enter our bodies. They do this in different ways.

For example the germ which causes malaria fever lives in the blood When a mosquito bites someone who has malaria, it sucks in some of the malaria germs Later, when it bites someone who is healthy, it passes the germs on to him. Fortunately we have good natural resources against many germs. Our bodies are made up of millions of very small cells, just as a building is made up of many stones or bricks. Some of these cells move about and swallow germs up O stop them from harming us.

We also make special substance in our bodies which attack germs for us. Some of these substances are always present; for example, our tears contain some to protect our eyes, and our saliva contains some to protect our mouths. Other sub- stances are made inside our bodies when certain kinds of germ attack us. These substances are called antibodies and each protects us against only one kind of gerrn. Unfortunately we cannot make antibodies against every kind of germ.

If we get well after making antibody againsi some kind of germ, our bodies go making some of the antibody. This helps to protect us against another attack by the same kind of germ. Often we are so well protected that we cannot catch the disease again. Then we are said to be immune to the disease If we get well after having smal pox we de-not catch it again for that reason
