Back in the 15th century in a small village in Germany lived the Durer family with 18 children. The father of these children was a goldsmith. Just to give this huge family food, the man had to work almost 18 hours a day. He also took up any other paying job he could find in the neighbourhood. Although they were very poor, two of the older children, Albrecht and Albert, had a dream. They wanted to be artists. But they knew their father would never send them to study in the Academy.
After many long discussions, the two boys finally made an agreement. They would toss a coin. The loser would go to work in the nearby mines. His earnings would support his brother to study at the Academy. In 4 years the brother who went to study would complete his course. He would then support the other brother to go to the Academy. If needed, he would even work in the mines.
One Sunday morning after church, they tossed the coin. Albrecht Durer, the younger brother won and went to the Academy. Albert went into the dangerous mines and for the next 4 years supported his brother. Albrecht’s work at the Academy was a sensation. His drawings, woodcuts and oil paintings were far better than those of most of his professors. By the time he graduated, he started earning a good fee for his works.
When he returned to his village, the Durer family held a festive dinner to celebrate his homecoming. It was a long and memorable meal, filled with music and laughter. At the end, Albrecht rose from his honoured position at the head of the table. He drank a toast to his beloved brother for the years of sacrifice. His closing words were, “And now, Albert, blessed brother of mine, now it is your turn. Now you can go to the Academy to fulfil your dream and I will take care of you.
All heads now turned to the place where Albert sat. Tears were flowing down his pale face. Shaking his lowered head from side to side he sobbed and repeated, over and over again, “No…..no…..no……no.” Finally he rose from his place and wiped the tears off his cheeks. He looked at the many faces he loved. Then he said softly, “No, brother: I can’t go to the Academy. It’s too late for me. Look! Look what 4 years in the mines have done to my hands! The bones in every finger have been smashed at least once. I can’t even hold a glass to return your toast. I can’t make art on canvas with a pen or a brush.”
More than 500 years have passed. By now, hundreds of Albrecht Durer’s masterful portraits, pen and silver-point sketches, water colours, charcoals, woodcuts and copper impressions hang in every museum in the world. But most people are familiar with only one of his works. One day, he decided to pay homage to his brother Albert for all that he had sacrificed. He drew his brother’s abused hands with palms held together with the thin fingers stretched skyward. He called his powerful drawing simply “Hands”. വളരെയധികം ഡിസ്കഷനുകൾക്ക് ശേഷം ആ രണ്ട് കുട്ടികളും ഒരു ഒത്തു തീർപ്പുണ്ടാക്കി. ആര് അക്കാദമി യിൽ പോകണം എന്ന കാര്യത്തിൽ തീരുമാനം എടുക്കാൻ അവർ ഒരു കോയിൻ ടോസ് ചെയ്യും. ടോസ് നഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്നവൻ അടുത്തുള്ള ഖനികളിൽ പോയി ജോലി ചെയ്യും. അവൻ സമ്പാദിക്കുന്ന പണം കൊണ്ട് ടോസ് ജയിക്കുന്ന ആൾ അക്കാദമിയിൽ പഠിക്കും. അക്കാദമയിൽ പോകുന്നയാളുടെ പഠനം 4 കൊല്ലം കൊണ്ട് പൂർത്തിയാകും. അപ്പോൾ അവൻ മറ്റവനെ അക്കാദമിയിൽ ചേർത്ത് പഠിക്കാൻ സഹായിക്കും. വേണ്ടി വന്നാൽ അക്കാദമിയിൽ പഠിച്ചുകഴിഞ്ഞയാൾ ഖനികളിലും ജോലി ചെയ്യും.
