The score was at 53 for 4 wickets. To win 60 more runs were needed. Ranji was at the crease. He was the last batsman in the batting order. The rest were bowlers. The bowlers were not expected to score many runs. Therefore, the fate of the team was in Ranji’s hands. His team had much faith in him as he had scored a lot of runs in many of its matches.
Ranji took his guard. The bowler was a tall person. He came down on his long run-up and hurled the ball at Ranji’s stumps. Ranji was going to move forward and play the ball back to the bowler. But at the last moment he changed his mind. He was intending to push the ball through the fielders on the off side. The ball swung in the air and sharply hit Ranji on his pads. LBW!
Ranji walked back disappointedly to the pavilion. The other batsmen could not score much and the team lost the match.
On his way back home, Ranji passed Mr. Kumar’s sports shop. The shop was next to the clock tower. He often went to that shop. Mr. Kumar had been a state player once and had scored a century against Tanzania. Now he was too old for first class cricket. But he encouraged young prayers. He thought Ranji would be a good cricketer, like the famous players of India. Ranji loved to look at Mr. Kumar’s goods: cricket bats, balls, badminton rackets, hockey sticks and so on. But today he did not want to go in.
Kumar asked Ranji why he looked as if he was in a hurry. He also said Ranji looked sad. Mr. Kumar spoke to him cheerfully as usual.
Ranji said he did not score a single run that day. He then explained what happened during the match. When Ranji finished his story, Mr. Kumar invited him into an inner room of the shop. Ranji went with Mr. Kumar. The inner room was badly lit. It was filled with all kinds of old and second hand sporting goods – torn football bladders, broken bats, rackets without strings, broken darts, and torn badminton nets.
Mr. Kumar looked carefully at a number of old cricket bats. He picked up one and said that it was the luckiest of his old bats. It was with that bat he made a century. “It may be an old bat, but it hasn’t lost any of its magic,” saying like that he held it out to Ranji. He said he would lend that bat to Ranji for the rest of the cricket season. Ranji took it and looked at it with respect and joy.
The magic bat changed Ranji’s luck. The next Saturday, he scored 58 runs and led his school to victory. On his way home, Ranji stopped at Kumar’s shop to give him the good news. He told him that his school team had won and he scored 58, which was the highest score so far. He said it was a really lucky bat. Mr. Kumar gave him a warm handshake and told him he would make bigger scores.
But then something unexpected happened. After one of the next matches, Ranji had to take one of his teammates, Bhim, to the hospital. Bhim was injured. In his worry about Bhim, Ranji left his bat in the bus. He remembered it only after he reached him. He did not remember in which bus he had travelled. The magic bat was lost.
Next day he went to Mr. Kumar’s shop looking sad. He told Mr. Kumar that he had lost the bat. He left it in the bus. The day after tomorrow there would be a play against a Delhi school. Ranji thought without the magic bat he would be out for a duck. Then his team will lose the chance to be school champions.
Mr. Kumar looked a bit anxious at first. He then said that Ranji could still make all the runs he wants to. Ranji said he did not have the magic bat with him. Mr. Kumar then told him any bat would do. Mr. Kumar explained that in a game it is the batsman and not the bat that is important. He said that the bat he gave him was no different from any other bat he had used. It is true he had made a lot fruns with it, but he had also made runs with other bats.
