Stanza 1: The poem opens with a declarative statement: “Nothing can ever happen twice”. The first stanza explores the arc of life, how every human arrives on earth “improvised”. Improvised means created and performed spontaneously or without preparation. We also leave this world without the chance to practise. Nobody practises death! The speaker argues that nothing can be rehearsed, life can only be lived.
Stanza 2: The speaker repeats the ideas in the first stanza through ” the metaphor of class and summer school. If you are not an intelligent student, you can repeat the class in summer. But the course of life is offered only once. There is no possibility of any repetition. Life and life’s moments happen just once.
Stanza 3: The speaker adds to the metaphor of class and summer school. Each day, and each night is unique, new. No day copies yesterday. No two nights will teach us what bliss is in the same way. Life cannot be replicated exactly.
Stanza 4: It begins with the phrase “One day” indicating a unique moment in time. One day somebody mentions your name by accident. Then you feel as if a rose was thrown into the room with all its colour and scent.
Stanza 5: The poet explores themes of passing time. Although you are with me I can’t help looking at the clock. This stanza emphasizes the speaker’s earlier commentary on life which is so short. When a person dies, flowers will be put all around his body and then he is buried. Rocks mean the sand, the earth, covering him when buried. It also means the tombstone placed on the grave.
Stanza 6: Since we know for certain that we shall die one day, why do we treat the fleeting day with so much fear and sorrow? We are not permanent on this earth. Today disappears when tomorrow comes.
Stanza 7: With kisses and smiles we try to live happily and peacefully on this earth although we are different. We are just two drops of water in the vast ocean of the universe.
