INTRODUCTION: Michael Jordan is a Black American born on 17 February 1963. He was one of the best basketball players. In this story we read about the challenges he faced in the basketball court and how he learned his lessons about patience and hard work.

Michael loved to play basketball. Every Saturday, he followed his elder brothers, Larry and Ronnie, to the park, hoping that they would let him play. There was a problem – Mark. Mark was the tallest boy on the court.

Mark moved his arms up and down Michael’s face and told him he was too short. When Michael threw the ball to Larry, Mark’s long arms knocked the ball away. It fell into the hands of a team mate of Mark. He threw the ball into the basket, and the game was over.

All the way home, Michael apologised. His eldest brother, Ronnie, tried to cheer him up. Ronnie told Michael that he played well that day and he should not worry. They would win the next time.

When they reached home, Michael went into the kitchen. Their Mama was cooking dinner. Michael asked his mother how he could grow taller. She said if he put salt in his shoes, he would grow taller. He became very happy and he asked many questions. He wanted to know how long it would take him to grow taller and how tall he could get.

Mama sat near him and explained things to him. She told him to be patient and listen to her carefully. He said he would be patient.

During dinner, Mama noticed that Michael was not eating much. He was thinking about getting taller. Then Mama told him that if he did not eat properly he would not get taller. Michael said he was not hungry. Then Mama looked at him in a slightly angry manner. Then Michael began to eat his food. Soon he finished what was in his plate and asked for more food.

There was a growth chart hanging on the wall of Michael’s bedroom. That evening at bed time, Michael placed his favourite game-shoes on the floor next to the growth chart. Then he wore his pyjamas. He then said his prayers and jumped into his bed.

When Mama came in, Michael was fast asleep. Standing near his bed, Mama sprinkled salt in his shoes.

After that night Michael wore his favourite game-shoes, and he felt the presence of the salt under his feet. He had a special feeling. He went everywhere wearing those shoes. He stopped going to the park with his brothers on Saturdays. He stayed at home and practised. He wanted to grow a few more inches before he went back to the park.

After two months of practising and waiting patiently, Michael stood next to the growth chart on his wall. There was no change. He had not grown even an inch. He was disappointed but he did not give up. He decided to wait patiently as his Mama had told him.

Two more months of practice passed. Still there was no change in his height. Michael was slowly becoming sad.

Next Saturday, Michael’s brothers tried to make him go with them to the park. But he was not willing to go. Mama was getting worried as Michael looked unhappy. When she saw him sitting alone on the steps, she asked Michael’s Daddy to go and talk to him. So Daddy went and sat with Michael on the steps. Daddy asked him why he was not going out to the park with his brothers. He asked him if he was alright. At first Michael did not reply. Then he said that he thought he would be taller at least by a few inches. He had done everything that Mama had told him to do. But his efforts have not made him taller.

Daddy asked Michael why he wanted to be taller. Michael said if he were taller he could help his team to win. Daddy then said that Michael was already a great player. After tapping on the chest of Michael, he added that he had everything in him to make him a winner. Being taller might help him to play a little better. But practice, determination and giving his best are more important than being a little taller. They are the qualities that make a person a real winner.

Michael thought about the things his Daddy told him. Then he got up and suddenly started running. His Daddy asked him where he was going. He said he had a game that day and he was already late.

When Michael reached the park the game had started. He sat on the bench hoping he would get a chance to play. Soon he got the chance. The game was almost finishing and the score was tied. Then suddenly one of the boys, John, fell down and hurt himself. Michael then got the chance to play. Michael joined his team when the players got together for a time-out.

Ronnie said that the game is tied. All they needed was one point. Who wanted to take the shot? Ronnie then looked in Michael’s direction. Feeling more confident than ever, Michael said he would do it.

The game restarted as the whistle blew. Mark began to pick on Michael as usual. He laughed at him by saying that he was trying to play with big boys. Michael paid no attention to Mark’s remarks. He had been practising and today he was determined to win.

Larry threw the ball to Michael. Michael took it, bounced it for a moment and then took off. As he came near Mark, he shifted to his right. Mark followed, but while he was still shifting, Michael turned to his left. He stepped behind Mark and shot. The ball arced above Mark’s hands and fell silently through the hoop.

Michael’s team got two points. His team won! It was just as Michael had dreamed. When he realised what he had done, he ran home and shouted: “I did it, Dad and Mom. I did it.” Running in behind him Ronnie and Larry joined the celebration. They said, “That’s right, little brother, you did it. You won the game for us.” After that day, Mama stopped putting salt in Michael’s shoes. Michael did not stop being patient and working hard.

വീട്ടിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ച് പോകും വഴി മൈക്കിൾ പലപ്രാവശ്യം ലാറിയോട് ക്ഷമ ചോദിച്ചു. മൈക്കിളിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും മുതിർന്ന സഹോദരനായ റോണി അവനെ സമാധാനിപ്പിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചു. അന്ന് മൈക്കിൾ നന്നായി കളിച്ചെന്നും അവൻ ആശങ്കപ്പെടേണ്ട എന്നും റോണി അവനോടു പറഞ്ഞു. അടുത്ത പ്രാവശ്യം അവർ ജയിക്കും എന്നും കൂടി റോണി കൂട്ടിച്ചേർത്തു.

മമ്മ മുറിയിൽ വന്നപ്പോൾ മൈക്കിൽ നല്ല ഉറക്കത്തിലായിരുന്നു. അവർ തറയിൽ ഇരുന്ന അവന്റെ ഷൂസു കളിൽ ഉപ്പ് വിതറി.

I am very happy today. Finally I was able to make my team win the game. I am especially thankful to my Daddy, Mama, and my brothers Larry and Ronnie who had faith in me. It was the advice of my Daddy that helped me the most.

Mark, the tallest prayer on the field used to laugh at me saying that I am too short to be a good basket ball player. I then asked my mother how I could get taller. She said I must sprinkle salt in my shoes to become taller. And she sprinkled salt in my favourite shoes. Even after many months of wearing the shoes in which salt was sprinkled, I did not grow even an inch. I was badly disappointed.

One day, seeing me sitting sad on the steps, my Mama sent Daddy to me to cheer me up. He told me that what I needed more than height was practice, determination and a willingness to do my best. I was impressed by his advice. I had continued with my practice although I was at times sad that I was too short. My practice, determination and will to do my best helped me greatly. In today’s game I was able to score for my team and make my team win the game. I dribbled past Mark and then I scored the winning points. I taught Mark a lesson! I am happy indeed.

Rasheed is my neighbour. One day the writer and Rasheed were standing under a mango tree. Then Rasheed told him that mango tree had a special place in his heart. Then Rasheed’s son, a young boy of 16, came with a plate of ripe, sliced mangoes. The writer ate some slices. Then Rasheed asked him if he liked the mango. The writer said it tasted like honey. He wanted to know if Rasheed planted it. He said the mango tree has an interesting story. He started telling the story.

It happened long ago. Rasheed was a young bachelor. He had gone to visit his young brother who was a police inspector. He worked in a small town about 75 miles from there. It was a hot day and Rasheed went for a walk in the evening. Soon he saw an old man lying under a tree. His beard was long and hair overgrown. He was around 80. As Rasheed approached he heard the old man groaning in pain. He looked very ill. He asked Rasheed to give him some water.

Rasheed saw a young woman sitting outside her house across the road. She was reading a paper. He asked him for some water. He told her about the old man. She got up and went with Rasheed.

When Rasheed gave the pitcher of water to the old man, he did something surprising. He got up with great difficulty and instead of drinking the water, he went to a withered sapling of a mango tree. It had sprouted from a seed thrown away by someone. The old man poured half the water on it. He then went back to the tree under which he was lying. He sat down and drank the water and prayed silently.

The old man said he was Yusuf Sidhik, a fakir. He had no relatives. He had spent most of his time travelling from place to place. Rasheed then introduced himself and said he was a school teacher. The woman said her name was Asma. She was also a school teacher.

The old man blessed them and lay down again. He died soon. Rasheed went home and brought his brother and they buried him in the local graveyard.

There were six rupees in the old man’s pocket. Asma and Rasheed added 5 rupees each. Rasheed bought sweets for the whole amount and Asma gave them to the students of her school. Asma watered the sapling every day. It soon sprouted fresh leaves. A little later Asma and Rasheed were married. When Rasheed built his house he brought this sapling and planted it there. They watered it regularly and put manure – dung, ash, humus and bone meal. Soon it grew and spread its canopy. Rasheed embraced the tree.

As the writer was turning to walk home, Rasheed’s son called him and gave him some mangoes wrapped in a newspaper. He said his mother had given them. The writer asked the name of the boy. He said his name was Yusuf Sidhik.

She thought she would help everyone to know the problem and then together they could find a solution.

The next day Rebecca requested her teacher to give a lesson about the changing weather and the damage people were doing to nature. The teacher gave the class a lesson on those topics. At the end of the class Rebecca told her classmates: “When you go home, talk about the things you have learned to your parents.” In a few days everyone was talking about how people were harming nature.

One day the elders of the village held a meeting. They asked Rebecca what could be done to help nature. Their problem was so big. One elder said they should write a letter to the President of Kenya telling him that they can’t live without rain. Maybe then the President will implement laws to stop harming nature.

Rebecca took the letter and shared it with her classmates, who asked their parents to sign the letter to show their support. In Nairobi, the President read the letter to the Maasai community. He received letters from many other parts of the country also. The President wanted to protect nature. He asked his countrymen to plant trees outside their homes. In the Maasai community everyone agreed to plant a tree outside his home. Rebecca and mother also planted a sapling.

At Rebecca’s school, in the assembly, the Principal addressed the students. He asked Rebecca to stand beside him, he said, “Protecting the environment is a big job and everyone in the world has to help. We thank Rebecca for helping us to learn and make a change. Imagine how beautiful the world would be if we all helped our community!” Rebecca felt very happy. She wondered what she and her friends would do next to help nature and the community.

The planned activities for the World Environment Day by the Eco Club of Crescent Public School, Chalakudy were inaugurated in the school by the Ward Member. In his inaugural address to the rally the Ward Member explained how we are harming nature and causing the terrible climate change. He talked about the floods that ravaged Kerala in 2018 and the terrible hot days that the people of Kerala experienced in the Month of April and May, 2024, before the summer rains came by the middle of May. Cars, buses and planes pollute the air. Trees are cut down to construct buildings. Large amounts of garbage are buried underground. All these harm nature. So we have to do some things to protect nature. He said that the very first thing we should do is planting trees wherever possible. We should stop mindless industrialization and urbanization in the name of development.

After the rally, the students planted different kinds of saplings on the school premises. They also distributed saplings to all the students in the school so that they could plant them in their compounds. The students took a pledge not to do anything that will harm nature and to do all they could to conserve water, and to keep the rivers, land and air free from pollution. The World Environment Day reminded everyone that we have only one habitat and we should not destroy it because of our greed.

Her clothes would shine like Rosamma’s. Hundreds of people will clap for her. She will eat cotton candy every day. Her best friend would be a joker.

When Arya was 8, she wanted to be Kalpana Chawla. She made herself an orange space suit and wore it day and night. When her mother asked her if she does not feel hot in that suit, Arya told her that astronauts had to get used to the suit. Space is not as safe as the Earth. Her suit would protect her.

When Arya was 12, she wanted to be Amelia Earhart. Arya built a model plane for her school project. It couldn’t fly, but she got the second prize. She even got her hair cut like Amelia’s.

Soon Arya heard of Angulia Bai, Kumudammal, and Sarla Thakrai. They were the first Indian women to fly a plane. Angulia Bai was 16. Arya said she can’t wait to be teenager to fly. She can neither drive nor vote but she can fly.

When Arya was 18, she wanted to be a fighter pilot. Seeing a poster with some pictures on her wall, her little brother Raju asked her who they were. Arya said they were Bhawana, Avani and Mohana, the first women to fly fighter planes in India. He asked her if they were her friends. She smiled and said maybe someday they would be her friends.

Arya saved up enough money to attend flying school. She spent years learning. She sat with pilots to learn from them. She worked hard and ate a lot of carrots. Her Amma had told her that carrots were good for the eyes. Finally she was ready to sit in the cockpit.

Today is a special day for Arya. She is in the cockpit. She is very happy because she has two special passengers with her. She announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain Arya. Welcome aboard!” Raju was thrilled and he said, “Chechi!”. Saying, “Yes, my daughter!” his mother hugged him.
