One day, I got in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when unexpectedly a car jumped out of a parking space, right in front of us. My taxi driver applied the brakes suddenly. Fortunately, our car missed the other car by just inches. The driver of the other car turned his head around and started shouting at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy.

So I asked, ‘Why did you just do that? That guy would have ruined your car!’. Then my taxi driver taught me what I now call “The law of the Garbage Truck’. He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up they need a place to dump it and sometimes they will dump it on you. Don’t take their garbage and spread it to other people.

Successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Love the people who treat you right. Forgive the ones who don’t. This attitude will help you sail through life. Life is 100 percent what you make it and how you take it.

Question 6.
Where did the car appear suddenly from, right in front of the author’s taxi?
Answer:
The car appeared suddenly right in front of the author’s taxi from a parking space.

What was the reaction of the taxi driver when the driver of the other car shouted at him?
Answer:
The taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy who shouted at him.

Question 9.

Answer:
The taxi driver compared people like the shouting driver to garbage trucks. As their garbage piles up they need a place to dump it and sometimes they will dump it on you.

Question 10.
What, according to the author, determines the major part of our life?
Answer:
The major part of your life is determined by your attitude. Life is what you make it and how you take it.

Question 15.
Read the following stanzas from the poem ‘The Ballad of Father Gilligan’ and attempt a brief appreciation focussing on the theme and poetic devices used.

The old priest Peter Gilligan
Was weary night and day
For half his flock were in their beds
Or under green sods lay.

Once, while he nodded in a chair
At the moth-hour of the eve
Another poor man sent for him,
And he began to grieve.

‘I have no rest, nor joy, nor peace,
For people die and die;
And after cried he,’ God forgive!
My body spake not I!’
Answer:
The poem talks about the restless life of Fr. Peter Gilligan as his parish was afflicted with some dangerous disease. Half of his parishioners were already dead or were very sick. He was running up ‘ and down giving his dying folk their last sacrament or conducting funerals. One day he was so tired that he sat on his chair and was dozing in the evening when somebody came to call him. He then complains that he has no rest, joy, or peace as people are dying fast. But immediately he asks forgiveness from God and says it was his weak body that made the complaint.

It is a fine poem in simple language, although it has used some words that are no longer in use, like ‘spake’ for spoken. It has rhyme and the rhyming scheme is abcb. The imagery is very powerful. We can see the parish afflicted with some dangerous diseases killing people like flies. We can very well imagine the old priest being worn out because of hard work. There are visual and auditory images in the poem. We can see sick people in their beds, green sods indicating the buried bodies. We can see the old priest nodding in his chair. In the word ‘cried’ we have an auditory image. The poem has a fine message. We should not complain about our work and we should do our duties faithfully despite the tiredness of the body.

Question 16.
The boy in the short story ‘Adventures in a Banyan Tree’ witnessed a fierce fight between a cobra and a mongoose. Imagine that he narrated the fight to his grandfather. Prepare the likely narrative.
(Hints: The boy sits on the top of a banyan tree – On an April afternoon – a huge black cobra glides out – a mongoose emerges from bushes – a battle of champions – a myna and a jungle crow arrives – intervenes in the fight – the crow dies -the final result of the fight)
Answer:
Grandfather, today I saw a fight between a mongoose and a cobra. I was sitting on the platform I made in the banyan tree near our house. Today when I was sitting there I saw the fight between the mongoose and the cobra. They were fighting in the garden. There was a warm breeze which had kept people inside their homes. I was also feeling drowsy and was thinking of going for a swim in the pond near our house. I then saw a cobra coming out of the cactus bush. It was looking for a cooler place in the garden.

A mongoose also came out and went towards the cobra. They came face to face. The cobra knew that the 3 feet long mongoose was a fine fighter. But the cobra was also an experienced fighter. His sharp teeth were full of poison. The cobra hissed. His tongue darted in and out. The cobra was 6 feet long. It raised its spectacled hood. Apart from me, a myna and a jungle crow were watching the fight. The cobra was moving from side to side looking for a chance to attack the mongoose. As the mongoose moved nearer, the cobra struck. But the mongoose jumped to one side and was not struck. Then it bit the snake on the back and moved away.

When the mongoose struck the cobra, the crow and the myna flew fast toward it, but they collided in mid-air and they returned to the cactus. The mongoose struck again and there was blood on the cobra’s back. The crow and the myna dived at the cobra. The cobra struck the crow and the crow died. The myna flew away. The snake was weakening. The mongoose picked the cobra by its nose. The cobra coiled around the mongoose. But soon it stopped trying to get away. The mongoose carried the cobra into the bushes. The myna flew away and I came down to inform you about the fight and the death of the cobra.

Finally Martha in the short story The Scholarship Jacket’ won the scholarship jacket. She was the class valedictorian and had to deliver a thank-you speech. Prepare the likely speech Martha would deliver on graduation night.
(Hints: introduces herself – poor family background – her expectations – the hardwork work – the unexpected decision by the principal – grandfather’s firm stand – final meeting with the principal – the final decision to award her the jacket – her gratitude to her teachers, friends, and family).
Answer:
Respected Principal, my dear teachers and friends, It is with joy and sorrow that I stand here. Joy because I have passed the 8th grade and received the scholarship jacket. I am sorrowful because I have to leave this school and my beloved teachers who have made me grow wiser and my friends with whom I have spent 8 years of my childhood. I thank the Principal my teachers and my classmates who have helped me in getting this scholarship jacket. My sister had earned it a few years ago and now I am getting it and I am sure my family members will be proud of pie.

I take this opportunity to especially thank my History Teacher, Mr. Schmidt, who has helped me in different ways. I will always remember him with gratitude. Before I conclude, I would like to make a suggestion. This year the Board had decided to charge 15 dollars for the jacket. But fortunately for me, the Principal was kind enough to make an exception and that is why I am getting this jacket. I want to say to everyone concerned that a scholarship jacket will not remain a scholarship jacket if one has to pay for it even a single dollar. I once again thank everyone for making my stay in this school a memorable one. I wish all my classmates a successful future.

Answer:
Aunt Jane in the one-act play “The Never-Never Nest” by Cedric Mount is highly practicable in her dealings. She does not appreciate the behaviour of Jack and Jill who go on buying things on credit. Jack and Jill have a baby. When Aunt comes to visit them in their home, she is surprised to find that even though Jack earns only 6 pounds a week, they live in a beautiful house with all the comforts. There was fine furniture, a radiogram, a piano, a car, and a refrigerator. Aunt Jane then wonders if she had given them a wedding gift of 2000 pounds instead of the 200 pounds she intended to give.

Otherwise, how could Jack and Jill buy all these things? She is more surprised to hear that the house they live in is their own and not a rented one. Aunt Jane then realizes that neither the house nor anything in it belongs to Jack and Jill as all of them were bought on the “Buy-now-pay-later” marketing scheme. In their car, only a tire and one or two other things have been paid for. Only one leg of the sofa belonged to Jack and Jill. Even the child was not their own as they still owed money to the doctor. Before leaving them, Aunt Jane gives them a cheque for 10 pounds asking them to make at least one article their own, using that money! Using that money Jill pays the doctor and thus makes the baby their own!

Question 20.
Imagine that Satyajit Ray Writes a letter to one of his friends after his visit to the Hollywood filmmakers in making animals and birds, act in films. Write the likely letter.
Answer:
From:
Satyajit Ray
Ray Films
Esplanade
Calcutta

To:
Mr. Sudhendu Choudhary
XVI/82, Aravalli Hills,
New Delhi – 003

22 July 1970

Dearest Sudhendu,
I am writing this letter with the special intention of telling you how Hollywood filmmakers make animals and birds act in their films. I was surprised to see these things as we don’t have such things in Indian films. I was greatly impressed and I want to shoot my next film titled “Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne” with a tiger in an important role in it.

No one can beat Hollywood when it comes to making films with animals and birds in them. I remember many such films in which there was an Alsatian named Rin-tin-tin. It acted even better than humans. I also saw some films where a collie called Lassie was made to act. It looked as if the director could make Lassie act the way he wanted it to act. These dogs were Jike stars and they were paid like any other big actor. Their owners could easily get one lakh rupees for just one film.

In the Disney Studio, I saw how these animal actors are respectfully treated. The main character in this particular film was a large dog. The cameraman was getting the lights ready. Before the dog appeared, a dwarf was working as the dog’s stand-in. Every animal in a Hollywood film is well-trained.

It is easy to train horses and dogs. But in Hollywood, there were nearly a hundred trained ravens. In India, it is not easy to find trained animals. Some films were indeed made in Bombay and Madras using trained elephants, horses, and tigers. Their performance showed that they just obeyed commands. I feel we too must have trained animals and birds in India as in Hollywood.

I hope your wife and children are fine. Say “Hi” to them on my behalf. I will be coming to Delhi next month and then we shall talk further about the issue of films.

Yours sincerely,
Satyajit Ray

Question 21.

But Mr. John was saved by the timely interference of the police sergeant who came to investigate, Dr. Cronin who was called to help the suicide victim, and also by the landlady of Mr. John. The story is like this.

The parents of John died when he was very young. His uncle helped him to get a job as a clerk in a London lawyer’s office. As John had no friends, he had fallen into bad company. He was enjoying the pleasures of his life beyond his means. He started betting on horses. Soon he lost all his savings and he incurred a lot of debt. To get money he stole 7 pounds and 10 shillings from the office safe to make a final bet. But again he lost. He was desperate and he returned to the room. He wanted to die. He turned on the gas. He became unconscious. When he became conscious, he saw the police sergeant, Dr. Cronin, and the landlady standing around him. He told them why he wanted to die.

The sergeant, Dr. Cronin, and the landlady were sympathetic people. They decided to help John. The policeman would not report the case and so there would be no trial. Dr. Cronin gave him 7 pounds and 10 shillings to replace the money he had stolen. The landlady offered him a free board for a month. All these acts of kindness changed John. It was then he decided to work for the rehabilitation of the delinquent youth. John is now a lawyer by profession. In addition, he is the director of a charitable organization devoted to the welfare of boys and girls. These are mostly delinquent youths. John and his wife take delinquent youths from the juvenile courts and place them in a healthy environment. They heal them in mind and body and send them back into the world. Question 22.
The speech titled ‘The Danger of a Single Story’ by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie shows us how people form wrong ideas about persons and things by believing in a single story.
Prepare a write-up on the danger of a single story based on her speech.
Answer:

The Danger of a Single Story

A single story creates stereotypes. The problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but they are incomplete. The experience of Chimamanda Adichie while she was a student in the USA proves the point. Her American roommate was surprised to hear Adichie speak English so well and she liked the songs of Mariah Carey. The American roommate could never imagine that a girl from Nigeria would speak English or listen to singers like Mariah Carey. Many British, Canadians, or Australians feel surprised when Indians speak fluent English because they think that Indians can’t speak English well.

Adichie further elaborated on how single stories often misinform and misguide people. They had a servant, whose name was Fide. Her mother always talked about the poverty of Fide. Adichie once visited Fide’s home and found his brother was a fine craftsman who could make beautifully patterned baskets. But she knew only of their poverty and not their artistic skills. This is what happens to many of us. We hear just one thing about a person or a country. We don’t hear other things about him or the country. And so our opinion about the person and the country remains prejudiced. In India, there are many street magicians and snake charmers. Many people in Africa and Europe think that all Indians know magic and they can handle snakes like Vava Suresh.

We all have heard the story of six blind men going to ‘see’ the elephant. Each of them felt with their hands a different part of the elephant. The person who felt the leg of the elephant said that an elephant was like a pillar. The one who felt the ear said that an elephant was like a hand-fan. To the one who felt the tail of an elephant was like a stick! They all were right in their limited way, but they were all wrong about their concept of the elephant. So before coming to conclusions, we should hear not a single story about something, but different stories about it. Otherwise, we will remain prejudiced like the blind men in the story.

I had thought my miserable life with the theatrical group had ended and with the love Didi Kiran gave me I was living most happily. All my misery is caused by Satish. If he was not the brother-in-law of Didi Kiran I would have beaten him up. When I took the grand inkstand he brought and hid it in my box, my only intention was to take revenge on him. He is the one who spoilt my happy life. After his coming, Didi Kiran was almost neglecting me. I certainly was jealous. I simply wanted to throw the inkstand in the river to show my anger towards Satish.
