(Introduction: This is an excerpt from Chapter 1 of Helen Keller’s autobiography. Her brief biography is given at the end of the lesson, after the section “Vocabulary”. She became world famous in spite of the fact that she was completely blind and deaf.)
The beginning of my life was simple. As the first baby in the family, I came, I saw, I conquered like every first baby. There was discussion about my name. The first baby in the family was not to be lightly named. My father suggested Mildred Campbell, who was one of our highly esteemed ancestors. But on the way to the church, my father forgot the name. When the church minister asked him for the name he said Helen Adams.
As a baby I was eager and self-asserting. I was fond of imitating other people. When I was 6 months old I could say “How d’ye”. One day I attracted everybody’s attention by saying ‘tea, tea, tea’ quite clearly. Before my illness, another word I learned was ‘water’. I continued to make some sound for that word after all other speech was lost. I stopped making the sound ‘wah-wah’ only when I learned to spell the word.
I was told that I walked on the day when I was a year old. My mother was holding me in her lap after taking me out of the bathtub. I was attracted by the flickering shadow of leaves that danced in the sunlight on the smooth floor. I got out of my mother’s lap and ran towards them. I fell down and cried and I wanted her to take me in her arms.
These happy days did not last long. It lasted only one year. One brief spring – when the robin and the mockingbird sang their melodious songs. One summer with its blooming roses and fruits. An autumn with its golden fruits and falling leaves. It happened in February in the middle of winter. I was struck by an illness that closed my eyes and ears forever. The doctors thought I would die, but one morning the fever left me. My family was happy. Nobody, even the doctor, knew I would not see or hear again.
My memories are confused about that illness. I remember how lovingly my mother tried to soothe me. I also remember the pain and confusion I had when I woke up after a disturbed sleep. I turned my eyes away from the light I loved once. Except these fleeing memories, it all seems very unreal, like a nightmare. Gradually I got used to the silence and darkness around me. It was my teacher who changed everything and set my spirit free. But the first 19 months of my life was different, I had seen broad, green fields, a luminous sky, trees and flowers. The darkness that followed could not wipe them away.

എന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ തുടക്കം വളരെ സിംപിൾ ആയിരുന്നു. കുടുംബത്തിലെ ആദ്യ കുട്ടി എന്ന നിലയിൽ ഞാൻ വന്നു, കണ്ടു, കീഴടക്കി. എനിക്ക് ഇടേണ്ട പേരിനെപ്പറ്റി വലിയ ഒരു സംവാദം നടന്നു. എന്റെ അച്ഛൻ എനിക്കു തരാൻ നിർദ്ദേശിച്ച പേര് മിൽഡ്രഡ് കാംബെൽ എന്നായിരുന്നു. ഞങ്ങളുടെ പൂർവികരിൽ വളരെ പ്രശസ്ഥയായ ഒരാളായിരുന്നു അവർ. പക്ഷേ പള്ളിയിലേക്കു പോകുന്നവഴിയിൽ അച്ഛൻ എനിക്കിടാൻ നിശ്ച യിച്ചിരുന്ന പേരു മറന്നുപോയി. പള്ളിയിലെ അച്ചൻ കുട്ടിക്ക് എന്തുപേരാണിടുന്നത് എന്നു ചോദിച്ചപ്പോൾ എന്റെ അച്ഛൻ പറഞ്ഞു. “ഹെലൻ ആഡാംസ്”
ഒരു കുഞ്ഞായിരുന്നപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ പല കാര്യങ്ങളും ചെയ്യാനാഗ്രഹിച്ചു. ഞാൻ ഒരു നിർബദ്ധ ബുദ്ധിയായി രുന്നു. മറ്റുള്ളവരെ അനുകരിക്കാൻ ഞാൻ തല്പരയായിരുന്നു. എനിക്ക് 6 മാസം മാത്രം പ്രായമുള്ളപ്പോൾ എനിക്ക് “ഹൗഡീ” എന്നു പറയാൻ പറ്റുമായിരുന്നു. (ഹൗഡി എന്നത് ഹൗഡു യുഡു എന്നതിന്റെ ചുരുക്ക മാണ്. ) ഒരു ദിവസം ‘ചായ, ചായ, ചായ” എന്നു ക്ലിയറായി പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് ഏവരേയും ഞാൻ ഞെട്ടിച്ചു. എന്റെ അസുഖത്തിനു മുൻപ് ഞാൻ പഠിച്ച ഒരു വാക്ക് “വാട്ടർ” എന്നതായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ എന്റെ സംസാര ശേഷി നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടപ്പോൾ “വാട്ടർ” എന്നതിനു പകരം അതുപോലെ ഏതോ ഒരു വാക്ക് ഞാൻ പറയുമായി രുന്നു. “വാ വാ “എന്നോ മറ്റോ ആയിരുന്നു അത്. വാക്കിന്റെ ശരിയായ സ്പെല്ലിംഗ് പഠിച്ചപ്പോൾ ആ വാക്കു പറയുന്നത് ഞാൻ നിർത്തി.
ഒരു വയസ്സു തികയുന്ന ദിവസം ഞാൻ ആദ്യമായി നടന്നു എന്നാണ് എല്ലാവരും പറയുന്നത്. ബാത്ത് ടബിൽ നിന്നും അമ്മ എന്നെ എടുത്ത് മടിയിൽ വച്ചിരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അപ്പോൾ തറയിൽ ഇലകളുടെ അനങ്ങുന്ന നിഴലുകൾ കണ്ടു. ഞാൻ അമ്മയുടെ മടിയിൽ നിന്നും ചാടി എഴുന്നേറ്റ് നിഴലുകളുടെ അടുത്തേക്ക് ഓടി. പക്ഷേ ഞാൻ വീഴുകയും കരയുകയും ചെയ്തു. അമ്മ എന്നെ എടുക്കണം എന്ന് ഞാൻ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചു.
ഈ സന്തോഷ ദിവസങ്ങൾ നീണ്ടുനിന്നില്ല. ഒരു കൊല്ലം മാത്രമേ അതുണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളു. ഒരു ചെറിയ വസ ന്തം കുരുവികൾ, മോക്കിംഗ് ബേഡ്സ് എന്നിവയുടെ ഈണമുള്ള പാട്ടുകൾ. ഒരു വേനൽ പൂക്കളുടേയും പഴ ങ്ങളുടേയും കാലം. ഒരു ശരത്കാലം സ്വർണ്ണനിറമുള്ള പഴങ്ങളും പൊഴിയുന്ന ഇലകളും, പിന്നീട് ഫെബ്രുവ രിയിൽ തണുപ്പുകാലത്തിനിടയിൽ അതു സംഭവിച്ചു. എനിക്ക് അസുഖം പിടിപ്പെട്ടു. എന്റെ കാഴ്ചയും കേൾവിയും എന്നന്നേക്കുമായി എനിക്കു നഷ്ട്പെട്ടു. ഞാൻ മരിക്കും എന്നാണ് ഡോക്ടേഴ്സ് കരുതിയത്. പക്ഷേ ഒരു ദിവസം പനി എന്നെ വിട്ടുപോയി. എന്റെ വീട്ടുകാർക്ക് സന്തോഷമായി. പക്ഷേ ആർക്കും, ഡോക്ടറിനു പോലും, അറിയില്ലായിരുന്നു എനിക്കിനി കാണാനും കേൾക്കാനും കഴിയില്ലെന്ന്.
അസുഖത്തെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള എന്റെ ഓർമ്മകൾ അത്ര കൃത്യമൊന്നുമല്ല. എന്റെ അമ്മ എത്രമാത്രം എന്നെ ആശ്വസി പ്പിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്ന കാര്യം എനിക്കോർമ്മയുണ്ട്. അസ്വസ്ഥമായ ഉറക്കത്തിനുശേഷം എഴുന്നേൽക്കു മ്പോൾ ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന വേദനയും ആശയക്കുഴപ്പവും ഞാൻ ഓർക്കുന്നു. ഒരിക്കൽ ഞാൻ സ്നേഹിച്ചിരുന്ന പ്രകാശം കാണുമ്പോൾ ഞാൻ കണ്ണുകൾ മറുവശത്തേക്ക് തിരിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. ഇങ്ങിനെയുള്ള ചില ചെറിയ ഓർമ്മ കൾക്കപ്പുറം എല്ലാം ഒരു ദുഃസ്വപ്നം പോലെ മാത്രമേ എനിക്കോർമ്മയുള്ളു. പതുക്കെ പതുക്കെ ചുറ്റിലുമുള്ള ഇരുട്ടിനോടു നിശബ്ദതയോടും ഞാൻ പരിചിതയായി. എന്റെ ടീച്ചറാണ് എല്ലാം എനിക്കു മാറ്റിതന്നതും എന്നെ സ്വതന്ത്രയാക്കിയതും. പക്ഷേ ആദ്യ 19 മാസത്തെ എന്റെ ജീവിതം വ്യത്യസ്ഥമായിരുന്നു. പച്ചപ്പാട ങ്ങൾ, തിളങ്ങുന്ന ആകാശം, മരങ്ങളും, പൂക്കളും. പിന്നീടു കയറിവന്ന ഇരുട്ട് അവയെയൊക്കെ തുടച്ചുകള യാൻ പര്യാപ്തമായിരുന്നില്ല.
