The plane entered a cloud and we rocked with the turbulence outside. There was silence among the passengers. Most of the passengers were young men going to Kerala where everything was in abundance except a labour force and rain. As the plane swayed, one child cried in fear. An elderly couple who had been talking all the time became silent. Most of the young men were guest workers from the North returning to Kerala. The memory of the 2018 floods was frightening.
All around me there was fear and anxiety, but I was happy. Turbulence meant wind- currents and the monsoon. The southwest monsoon was playing hide and seek for 6 weeks. I was calling my parents in Kerala everyday and asking them whether it was raining there. If the answer was positive more questions about leaky roofs, slippery paths, power outages, and water on the ground would follow.
Normally on July 17, the first of Karkatakam, the rains are very heavy in Kerala. But this time there was only a small drizzle and the sun was shining. My mother did not know where all the rain had gone. She asked if it has gone to Bangalore.
When not in my village Mundakkattukurissi, I live in Bangalore. For a whole week a brutal wind was blowing in the northern outskirts of the city. Window shutter banged and the doors opened themselves. Trees creaked, while leaves hissed. The wind blew day and night pushing the monsoon clouds away. So the turbulent flight to Kerala indicated possible rain. But when we got down at Kochi there was no rain. There were some clouds in the skies but no rain. One felt both helpless and powerless. Not a drop of rain travelled with me to my village. Usually monsoon came here in June. But even now there was no rain.
The meteorological department said the rain was lurking in the Maldives. The villagers said that the summer drought was intense. The wells and canals had dried up the water table was low. By constructing huge concrete buildings, putting tiles in the front yards and cutting down more trees, in a decade’s time water will become very costly here. In Bangalore people have to pay Rs. 400 for a small tanker of water, as the community bore-well does not give them sufficient water. By this time, a week into Karkatakam, the canals here must have been overflowing. But monsoon has not come yet.
At dusk my 85-old uncle came. He still rides his scooter. He learned to ride when he was 78. He has seen that monsoon can bring trouble and its lack also brings trouble. We talked about the past monsoons. Everything would be clammy to the couch. Even stones became mossy green. This time the monsoon was proved a disappointment just like the much awaited visit by a rich uncle that turns into a joyless anticlimax. There is no rain, but there are grey skies, rumbling thunder and stillness in the air. Evening turns into night. There is a lone firefly. I watch the night hoping there will be a downpour but then I go to bed.
I wake up to the drumming on my tile roof. It is 2 am. The monsoon has finally come. The prodigal son has found his way home. I pulled the sheet to my chin and snuggled deeper into bed. It is one of the pleasures of monsoon. When I wake up in the morning it is still raining. The music of rain is there. I make a cup of tea and sit on the swing seat on the verandah. I watch the rain as if it is migratory bird. What tales do each raindrop hold? What lessons will it teach? What gifts will it offer? For now the world is a beautiful place.

പ്ലെയിൻ ഒരു മേഘത്തിനകത്തേക്ക് കയറി. പുറത്ത് ഭയങ്കര കാറ്റും കോളുമായിരുന്നു. പെട്ടെന്ന് യാത്ര ക്കാരെല്ലാം നിശബ്ദരായി. ആ പളെയിനിൽ കൂടുതലും ചെറുപ്പക്കാരായിരുന്നു. അവർ കേരളത്തിലേക്ക് പോകു കയാണ്. കേരളത്തിൽ എല്ലാ സമൃദ്ധമായിട്ടുണ്ട്. രണ്ട് കാര്യങ്ങൾ ഒഴികെ ജോലിക്കാരും മഴയും. പള്ളയിൽ അങ്ങോട്ടും ഇങ്ങോട്ടും ഉലഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ ഒരു കുട്ടി പേടിച്ച് നിലവിളിച്ചു. നിർത്താതെ സംസാരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്ന വയസ്സായ ദമ്പതികൾ അവരുടെ സംസാരം പെട്ടെന്ന് നിർത്തി. യാത്രക്കാരായ യുവാക്കളിൽ മിക്കവാറും പേർ വടക്കേ ഇന്ത്യക്കാരാണ്. അവർ അവരുടെ നാട്ടിൽ പോയിട്ട് കേരളത്തിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു വരികയാണ്. അതിഥി തൊഴിലാളികളാണവർ. 2018-ലെ വെള്ളപ്പൊക്കത്തിന്റെ ഓർമ്മകൾ പേടിപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതായിരുന്നു.
എനിക്കു ചുറ്റും ആശങ്കയും ഭയവും ആണ്. പക്ഷേ എനിക്ക് സന്തോഷമായിരുന്നു. പുറത്തു നടക്കുന്ന കാറ്റിന്റേയും കോളിന്റേയും അർത്ഥം വേഗം തന്നെ മൺസൂൺ വരുമെന്നാണ്. കഴിഞ്ഞ 6 ആഴ്ചയായി തെക്ക് സാധാരണ ഗതിയിൽ ജൂലായ് 17-ാം തീയതി-കർക്കടകം ഒന്ന് കേരളത്തിൽ അതിഭയങ്കര മഴ പെയ്യേണ്ട ദിവസമാണ്. പക്ഷേ ഇത്തവണ അന്ന് വളരെ ചെറിയ ഒരു ചാറ്റൽമഴ മാത്രമേ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നുള്ളു. സൂര്യൻ നല്ല തുപോലെ പ്രകാശിക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. എന്റെ അമ്മക്കറിയില്ല ഈ മഴയെല്ലാം എങ്ങോട്ടാണ് പോയത് എന്ന്. അമ്മ എന്നോട് ചോദിച്ചു മഴ ബാംഗ്ലൂരിലെയ്ക്കെങ്ങാനും എത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ടോയെന്ന്.
എന്റെ ഗ്രാമമായ മുണ്ടക്കാട്ടുകുറിശ്ശിയിൽ അല്ലാത്തപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ ബാംഗ്ലൂരിലാണ് താമസിക്കുന്നത്. ബാംഗ്ലൂരിന്റെ പ്രാന്തപ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ കഴിഞ്ഞ ഒരാഴ്ചയായി ഒരു വലിയ കാറ്റ് വീശിയടിച്ചുക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. ജനൽപാളികൾ തന്നെത്താനെ അടഞ്ഞും തുറന്നും ശബ്ദമുണ്ടാക്കുകയും ചില വാതിലുകൾ തന്നെത്താനെ തുറക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. മരങ്ങൾ ഉരസി ശബ്ദമുണ്ടാക്കി. ഇലകൾ കൂട്ടിയുരുമ്മി ശബ്ദമുണ്ടായി. രാത്രിയും പകലും കാറ്റ് ശക്തമായി വീശുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ആ കാറ്റ് മൺസൂൺ മേഘങ്ങളെ മാറ്റിക്കൊണ്ടുപോകുകയാ യിരുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് കേരളത്തിലേക്ക് പോകുന്ന ഈ വിമാനം ആടിയുലഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ എനിക്ക് തോന്നി. കേര ളത്തിൽ മൺസൂൺ വരുമെന്ന്. പക്ഷേ ഞങ്ങൾ കൊച്ചിയിൽ വിമാനം ഇറങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ അവിടെ മഴയൊന്നും കണ്ടില്ല.
ആകാശത്തിൽ കുറച്ച് കാർമേഘങ്ങളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ മഴയൊന്നുമില്ല. പക്ഷേ ആർക്കും ഒന്നും ചെയ്യാൻ പറ്റില്ലല്ലോ. ഞാൻ എന്റെ ഗ്രാമത്തിലേക്ക് പോയിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നപ്പോഴും ഒരു തുള്ളിവെള്ളം പോലും എന്റെ ദേഹത്ത് വീണില്ല. സാധാരണയായി ജൂൺ മാസത്തിൽ കേരളത്തിൽ മൺസൂൺ വരേണ്ടതാണ്. പക്ഷേ ഇപ്പോൾ മഴ പെയ്തിട്ടില്ല. കാലാവസ്ഥ നിരീക്ഷണ കേന്ദ്രം പറഞ്ഞു, മഴ മാലിദ്വീപുകളിൽ എങ്ങോ കറങ്ങി നട ക്കുകയാണെന്ന്. ഗ്രാമീണർ പറഞ്ഞു, ഇത്തവണത്തെ വേനൽ പക്ഷേ അതികഠിനമായിരുന്നെന്ന്. കിണറുകളും കനാലുകളുമൊക്കെ വറ്റി വരളുകയും വാട്ടർടേബിൾ ഗണ്യമായി കുറയുകയും ചെയ്തു.
വലിയ വലിയ കോൺക്രീറ്റ് നിർമ്മിതികളും മുറ്റം നിറയെ ടൈൽസ് പരത്തുന്നതും മരങ്ങൾ വെട്ടിക്കളയുന്നതും ജലലഭ്യത ഗണ്യമായി കുറക്കുകയാണ്. 10 കൊല്ലത്തിനകത്ത് കേരളത്തിൽ വെള്ളത്തിന് വലിയ വില കൊടുത്ത് വാങ്ങേണ്ടി വരും. ബാംഗ്ലൂരിലേതുപോലെ. ബാംഗ്ലൂരിൽ ഒരു ചെറിയ ടാങ്കറിലെ വെള്ളത്തിന് 400 രൂപ കൊടുക്കണം. കമ്മ്യൂണിറ്റി ബോർവെല്ലിൽ നിന്നും കിട്ടുന്ന വെള്ളം തികയാതെ വരുമ്പോഴാണ് ടാങ്കറുകളിലെ വെള്ളം വാങ്ങേണ്ടി വരുന്നത്. കർക്കടകം വന്നിട്ട് ഒരാഴ്ച കഴിഞ്ഞെങ്കിലും ഇപ്പോഴും കേരളത്തിൽ മൺസൂൺ എത്തി യിട്ടില്ല.
സന്ധ്യ മയങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ 85 വയസ്സായ എന്റെ അമ്മാവൻ വീട്ടിലേക്ക് വന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം ഇപ്പോഴും സ്കൂട്ടർ ഓടിച്ചാണ് നടക്കുന്നത്. 78-ാം വയസ്സിലാണ് അദ്ദേഹം സ്കൂട്ടർ ഓടിക്കാൻ പഠിച്ചത്. അദ്ദേഹത്തിനറിയാം അധികം മൺസൂൺ മഴ ഉണ്ടായാലും ദുരിതം ആവശ്യത്തിന് ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും ദുരിതം തന്നെയെന്ന്. ഞങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞ കാലങ്ങളിലെ മൺസൂണുകളെപ്പറ്റി പറഞ്ഞു. നല്ല മൺസൂൺ കാലങ്ങളിൽ തൊടുന്നതെല്ലാം ദേഹത്ത് ഒട്ടിപ്പിടിക്കുന്നതുപോലെ തോന്നും. കല്ലുകളുടെ പുറത്തുവരെ പൂപ്പലുണ്ടാകും. ഇത്തവണ മൺസൂൺ നിരാ ശയാണ് സമ്മാനിച്ചത്. പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്ന ധനികനായ ഒരു അമ്മാവൻ വന്നിട്ട് ഒന്നും തരാതെ തിരിച്ചുപോ കുന്ന പോലെ. മഴയില്ല, പക്ഷേ ആകാശം മേഘാവൃതമാണ്. ഇടിമുഴക്കങ്ങൾ ഉരുളുന്നതുപോലെ കേൾക്കാം. വായു നിശ്ചലമാണ്. വൈകുന്നേരം രാത്രിയായിട്ട് മാറുന്നു. അവിടെ ഒരു മിന്നാമിനുങ്ങിനെ കാണാം. മഴ പെയ്യുമെന്നുള്ള വിശ്വാസത്തിൽ ഞാൻ രാത്രിയെ നിരീക്ഷിക്കുകയാണ്. പിന്നീട് ഞാൻ ഉറങ്ങാൻ പോയി.
റൂഫിന്റെ മുകളിൽ മഴത്തുള്ളികൾ വീഴുന്ന ശബ്ദം കേട്ടാണ് ഞാൻ ഉണർന്നത്. രാവിലെ 2 മണി. അവ സാനം മൺസൂൺ എത്തി. ധൂർത്തപുത്രൻ വീട്ടിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചെത്തിയിരിക്കുകയാണ്. ഷീറ്റ് ഞാൻ താടിയി ലേക്ക് വലിച്ച് കയറ്റി, കിടക്കയിൽ അമർന്നു കിടന്നു. മൺസൂൺ കാലത്തെ ഒരു പ്രത്യേക സുഖമാണത്. ഞാൻ കാലത്തെ എഴുന്നേറ്റപ്പോഴും മഴപെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. മഴയുടെ സംഗീതവും ഉണ്ട്. ഞാൻ ഒരു കപ്പ് ചായയുണ്ടാ ക്കിക്കൊണ്ട് വരാന്തയിൽ ആടുന്ന ഒരു സീറ്റിൽ ചെന്നിരുന്നു. ഒരു ദേശാടനപക്ഷിയെപോലെയാണ് മഴയെ ഞാൻ കണ്ടത്. ഓരോ മഴത്തുള്ളിക്കും എന്തെല്ലാം കഥകളുണ്ടായിരിക്കും.എന്തെല്ലാം പാഠങ്ങൾ അത് പഠി പ്പിക്കും, എന്തെല്ലാം സമ്മാനം അത് തരും! ഇപ്പോൾ ഈ ഭൂമിക്ക് സൗന്ദര്യമുണ്ട്.
