It is very true that both the women in Angelou’s “Woman Work” and Robin Klein’s “Amanda” lack freedom. In “Woman Work” the mother has no freedom as she is busy the various chores of the house. She has to do many things: send the children to school, mend clothes, mop the floor, go to the shop to buy food items, fry chicken, wipe the baby, give food to the guests, weed the garden, iron the shirts, dress the children, cut the sugarcane, clean up the house, attend to the sick and pick cotton.

In the poem “Amanda”, she has no freedom at all. She can’t bite her nails or hunch her shoulders. She has to sit up straight. She has to finish the homework. She has to tidy the room, and clean her shoes. She can’t eat chocolate because of her acne. She has to look into the eyes of the mother when talking, she can’t show any anger and she can’t be moody.

Class 6 English Cinderella Summary

Cinderella Summary in English

Once, a rich man lived happily with his wife and daughter. One day, the wife became sick and she thought she would die. She called her daughter and told her to be a good and pious child and God would take care of her. She said from heaven she would look upon her. She then died. The girl went to the mother’s grave everyday and cried. She remained good and pious. Soon the father married again. The new wife was proud and unkind.

The new wife had two daughters of her own. She brought them. They were beautiful from the outside, but they were wicked and ugly inside. Bad days were coming for Cinderella. The new girls treated Cinderella like a kitchen maid. They took away all her good dresses. They made her wear an old dress and wooden shoes. Cinderella had to do all the work at home from morning till night. She got up early in the morning, made the fire, cooked and washed. She had no bed to lie down and she had to rest on the hearth among the cinders. She always looked dusty and dirty. So they named her Cinderella.

The Magic Begins
One day the prince of the land invited all the young girls for a dance. He would choose his wife from the girls who came for the dance. Cinderella’s sisters chose the best gowns and made their hair beautiful. They would not take Cinderella to the dance. Cinderella begged the stepmother. But she insulted Cinderella saying that she is a dusty, dirty girl. The stepmother took her two daughters to the dance. Cinderella cried. She thought of her mother who would have sent her for the dance.

Suddenly the queen of fairies appeared. She told Cinderella she is her godmother. Cinderella could go for the dance. The queen took Cinderella to her room. She asked Cinderella to get a pumpkin from the garden. The godmother waved a magic wand over the pumpkin. It turned into a red coach. To draw the coach, horses were needed. The godmother asked Cinderella to bring the mousetrap behind her house. Cinderella brought it. There were six mice in it. The godmother made them into 6 white horses.

The godmother then told Cinderella to bring the 6 lizards she would find in the garden. When Cinderella brought them, they were changed into footmen. But Cinderella looked at her clothes and felt sad. The godmother then touched her with her magic wand and her dirty clothes changed into beautiful dresses of silk and gold. There were diamonds for her hair. and two glass shoes for her feet. The fairy told her she could go to the ball. The magic will end at 12 midnight. She must return home before that time.

The Ball
Cinderella went to the ball like a princess. Everybody said how beautiful she was. The prince noticed her. He danced only with her. Her sisters were jealous. But they did not know the princess was Cinderella. She went on dancing, forgetting the time. The clock began to strike 12. She remembered the words of the fairy. She bowed to the prince and ran out quickly. Reaching home, she wanted to tell the godmother all the things that happened. She said she wanted to go to the ball even the next day as the prince had invited her. Then her sisters knocked at the door. Cinderella opened the door.

She pretended as if she had been sleeping and asked them why they were so late. They said the finest princess had come and the prince danced with her. Cinderella asked them for the name of the princess. They did not know the name. Cinderella smiled and pretended she wanted to see such a beautiful princess. Then she asked one of the sisters to lend her the yellow dress she was wearing every day. The cruel sister said how she could lend her dress to such a dirty girl. Everyone except Cinderella laughed loudly.

The next day the sisters went to the ball. Cinderella also went. She was dressed even better than yesterday. The prince was always at her side, praising her. Cinderella forgot about the time. Then she heard the clock striking 12. She jumped up and ran like a deer. In her hurry, one of her glass shoes was left in the ball room.

As she reached the coach, she heard the last ‘ding dong’ of 12. Suddenly the coach became a pumpkin, the horses became mice, and the footmen became lizards. Her clothes became. the old rags. But one glass shoe on her foot did not change. She reached home before her sisters arrived. They did not know that she had gone to the ball.

The Search
The prince became very sad when Cinderella left him. His servants brought the glass shoe she had left behind. He wanted to find out the girl who danced with him. He asked his messengers to announce that he would visit every home the next day to find out the lady. All ladies were happy, especially the two sisters of Cinderella. They put on their best clothes and waited for the prince. Cinderella did not have any good clothes.

The prince went to every house and asked the girls there to try on the shoe. The girls tried but it would not fit them. Finally the prince went to Cinderella’s house. First, the elder sister took the shoe into her room to try it.

Her mother was with her. She could not get her big toe into the shoe. Then the mother gave her a knife and told her to cut the toe off. When she is a queen she will not have to walk. So she cut the toe off and squeezed her foot into the shoe. She hid her pain. The prince saw the blood flowing under the shoe.

Then the younger sister tried it. But her heel was too large. The mother asked her cut off a piece of the heel. She cut it and put her foot into the shoe. Now the prince was angrier and said it did not fit her foot.

Cinderella came forward and said she would try it. Her sisters laughed at her and asked her to go away with her dirty clothes. But the prince allowed her to try. It fitted her
perfectly. All were surprised. She then brought r the other shoe with her and put it on her right foot. The fairy changed Cinderella’s clothes into clothes of silk and gold. The prince danced with joy and said this was the right bride. He said to Cinderella that she was the most beautiful girl in the world and he would make her his bride. The prince married her and took her to the palace. Cinderella pardoned her sisters and took them to the palace with her. They all lived happily thereafter.

Cinderella Summary in Malayalam

Apu says so because Durga told him to get some oil and salt from the kitchen. Their mother has gone to the ghat for washing the clothes. He is afraid of his mother. An Appreciation of the film Pather Panchali
Pather Panchali is Satyajit Ray’s first film. The film deals with the pain of a poor family. The most loveable character is that of Indir Thakrun. She is an old, loving and storytelling aunt of Apu and Durga. It was played by an 80-year-old lady Chunibala.

The scenes where Apu and his elder sister Durga exploring their little world and sharing secrets are the most remarkable aspects of the film. These include the scenes of – discovery of train by Durga and Apu in the field of white Kash flowers, the candy seller sequence, and Indir Thakrun’s death.

The film develops its characters and the atmosphere slowly. The narrative builds up to a powerful climax as we begin to empathise with the characters. Towards the end of the film, after death of Durga, we see Apu going about doing his tasks. Sarbojoya (mother) has a lost look. Harihar returns, unaware of. Durga’s death. In a jovial mood he calls out his children. Without any reaction, Sarbojoya fetches water and a towel for him. Harihar begins to show the gifts he has brought for them. When he shows a sari that he has bought for Durga, Sarbojoya breaks down. Realising Durga’s loss, Harihar collapses on his wife. Finally the family decides to leave their ancestral home for Benaras.

The direction is excellent. The actors have performed well. The music is by Ravi Shankar. Subrata Mitra was the cinematographer. It was edited by Dulal Dutta. The film ran for eight months at the Fifth Avenue Playhouse in New York. Akira Kurosawa ranked Pather Panchali at No. 37 on his Top 100 favourite films of all time list.

Characters in the story:

  • Durga: An eleven-year-old village girl
  • Apu: Durga’s brother.
  • Sarbojoya: Their strict mother
  • Shorno: The woman who milks the cow

It was 8 or 9 am. Apu was playing alone on the verandah. Then he hears Durga calling him. Durga is 11. She is thin and darker than Apu. She had glass bangles. She had a fine face and large eyes. When Apu asked her why she was calling him, she showed him slices of tender mango in a half coconut shell. She asked Apu if the mother has come back from the ghat. Apu said no. She then asked him to bring some oil and salt to pickle those slices. Apu asked She said it was her from where she got them. She found under the Sindurkunto tr tree. Apu said mother will be angry if he takes down the oil pot from the shelf. Durga told him that mother will not return soon as she has gone to wash clothes.

Apu then asked Durga to give him the shell so that he can pour the oil into it. She should stand at the backdoor and watch if mother is coming back. She told him not to the spill the oil on the floor. When Apu came out, Durga mixed the slices with the oil and salt and asked him to put out his hand for his slice. He asked her if she will eat the rest of the slices. She then asked him to get a nice chilli. She will give him an extra slice. He said the chillies are kept on the top shelf and he can’t reach it. She asked him not to worry as she will get more budding mangoes which will fall in the afternoon sun.

The back door opened with a loud noise Sarbojoya called out Dugga, Dugga. Apu was still eating and grains of salt were all over his mouth. She could not reply as her mouth was full of mangoes. Many slices were left in the shell. She hid the shell behind a jackfruit tree.

Both Apu and Durga were swallowing the slices as there was no time to chew. Apu’s mouth still had grains of salt. Durga asked him to wipe his mouth, and entered the house as if nothing special had happened. The mother asked her where she had gone wandering. She also wanted to know where Apu was.

Apu suddenly appeared and said he was hungry. Sarbojoya asked Durga to go and check the calf as it was lowing away. Sarbojoya then sat down to cut up a cucumber for the children. Apu sat next to her. He told his mother to remove the white stuff from the cucumber as it stuck in his mouth. Durga spread out her palm to get her share and asked her mother if there was not any rice fry left. Apu suddenly said, “It is impossible… all those tart mangoes have set my teeth on edge.” Durga winked at him and he suddenly stopped. His mother asked him where he got the mangoes from. Apu looked at his sister. Sarbojoya asked her where she had gone to. She said she was just behind the jackfruit tree.

Fortunately, the milk woman Shorno entered to milk the cow. Sarbojoya asked Durga to go to catch the calf. Apu followed Durga. As soon as he stepped into the outer courtyard, Durga gave him a smart blow on is back. She called him a dumbo with no brains at all for telling the mother about his teeth on edge.

In the Expansive Plain Notes Class 9 Geography Chapter 2 Kerala Syllabus Questions and Answers

Question 3.
How is the formation of the North Indian Plains associated with the formation of the Himalayas? Elucidate.
Answer:
The formation of the North Indian Plains, also known as the Indo-Gangetic Plains, is closely associated with the formation of the Himalayas. This relationship is primarily driven by the tectonic activities involving the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. Here’s how the two processes are connected:

A. Tectonic Plate Collision:

  • Around 50 million years ago, the Indian Plate began its collision with the Eurasian Plate. This collision is a major tectonic event that led to the uplifting of the Himalayas.
  • As the Indian Plate moved northwards and collided with the Eurasian Plate, the intense pressure and force caused the crust to buckle and fold, leading to the formation of the Himalayan mountain range.

B. Erosion and Sediment Deposition:

  • The newly formed Himalayas were subjected to significant weathering and erosion due to climatic factors such as rainfall and glaciers.
  • Erosion processes carried vast amounts of sediment from the mountains down to the plains. Rivers such as the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra played a crucial role in transporting this eroded material.
  • Over millions of years, these rivers deposited sediments over a vast area, creating the extensive alluvial plains known as the North Indian Plains.

C. Formation of the Plains:

  • The sediments transported by the rivers settled in layers, gradually building up the plains. These alluvial deposits created the fertile soil characteristic of the IndoGangetic Plains.
  • The continual deposition of sediments has led to the formation of one of the most extensive and fertile plains in the world.

D. River Systems and Drainage Patterns:

  • The major river systems, originating in the Himalayas, carved out and shaped the plains. Their drainage patterns contributed to the distribution and depth of sediment deposits.
  • Flooding and seasonal variations in river flow further influenced the sediment distribution, continuously shaping the landscape of the plains.

Answer:

Question 4.
Answer:

Question 5.
Answer:

Question 6.
Answer:

Answer:

Question 8.
Answer:

Question 9.
Answer:

Question 10.
