Questions 1-5. Read the following extract from “Trills and Thrills: Bird-watching in India” and answer the questions that follow. (5 × 1 = 5)
One of the questions they ask me is about the thrilling adventures in a lifetime of exploring birds. My answer must seem disappointing. Ornithology as a hobby or profession is full of adventures, rewards and disappointments. It is one of the most peaceful of pursuits. It does not lack excitement and thrills.

Any birdwatcher can make exciting discoveries because of the rich variety of birds in India. It is refreshing to find that bird-watching as a hobby is growing.

I had grown up only on the traditional accounts of the nesting habits of birds. These were interesting for a keen photographer like me to record on film. While sitting hidden in a canvas hide, high up on stepladder, a few yards away from the nests, I noticed some uncommon happenings which showed that the birds had not read the textbooks. Tire field of study of birds is a peaceful occupation.

But it has its risks. In the elephant-ridden jungles in South India, I have often found myself in disturbing circumstances. Awild elephant suddenly coming near you is an unnerving experience. This is not uncommon in parts of Karnataka and Kerala. In fact there is hardly any danger from a wild elephant unless it happens to be a rogue or a female with a small calf.

The light was weak, even at noon. When Pelayo was coming to the house, it was hard for him to see what was moving and groaning at the back of the courtyard. He went close. Question 10.
(A) Read the following lines from the poem
“Mirror” by Sylvia Plath and prepare an appreciation focusing on the theme, poetic devices and the message. (1 × 5 = 5)

I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.
Whatever I see I swallow immediately
Just as it is, unmisted by love or dislike.
I am not cruel, only truthful,
The eye of a little god, four-cornered.
Most of the time I meditate on the opposite wall.
It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long
I think it is part of my heart. But it flickers.
Faces and darkness separate us over and over.
Answer:
The poem “Mirror” by Sylvia Plath is an excellent confessional poem. The poet presents herself as she really is. She says: “I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions. Whatever I see I swallow immediately just as it is, without any special love or dislike. I am not cruel. I am only truthful. I have the all seeing eye of a little god. Most of the time I just look and meditate on the opposite wall. It is pink, with speckles. I have looked at it so long that I think it is part of my heart. But it flickers. Faces and darkness separate us time and again.”

The poem is a profound meditation on self-perception, the brutal objectivity of time, and the human desire for illusion. The poem employs a striking use of personification, giving voice first to a mirror and then to a body of water, to explore the painful journey from youthful identity to the inevitable reality of aging.

The first stanza establishes the voice of the mirror, which speaks with an unnerving, clinical detachment. Plath writes, “I am silver and exact. I have no preconceptions.” The mirror casts itself as a perfect, objective observer, utterly devoid of emotion or bias. The mirror claims to simply swallow what it sees and reflect it faithfully.

The poet has used different poetic techniques to make the poem beautiful. We find personification in the mirror and the lake. There are alliterations like I see I swallow. There is symbolism. There are similes and metaphors. At the end of the poem we see an old woman rising towards her day after day like a terrible fish and this is a fine simile. The imagery is superb – the drowning young girl and the rising old woman present fine images. On the whole we can say that “Mirror” by Sylvia Plath is an excellent poem that teaches us to be sincere to ourselves in a powerful manner.

(B) In the speech “Friends, Romans, Countrymen” by Mark Antony we hear different opinions about Julius Caesar. Brutus has said that Caesar was ambitious. But Mark Antony says he was not. With whom do you agree? Justify your answer.
Answer:
In my view Mark Antony’s opinion is correct. With many examples, Mark Antony proves that. His speech considered to be an ideal example of a powerful speech in which you transform the attitude of the audience. Mark Antony is Caesar’s friend.

Caesar is assassinated by Brutus and some other conspirators. First, Brutus makes a brief but effective speech explaining the reasons for killing Caesar. The Romans seem to be convinced that Caesar deserved death and Brutus and the other conspirators did the right thing by killing Caesar to save democracy. Then comes Mark Antony, Caesar’s friend. Mark Antony seeks Brutus’ permission to make a funeral speech. Brutus agrees.

Antony’s masterful oration manipulates the emotions of the crowd. By using his oratorical skills which include repetition, metaphor, alliteration, irony, hyperbole, rhetorical questions, voice modulation, facial expressions and gesture, Mark Antony persuades the mob to believe that Brutus and the other conspirators had selfish motives in killing Caesar. He shows them Caesar was a very good man who worked for the welfare of the Romans. The attitude of the crowd changes and now the infuriated mob wants to take revenge on the murderers of Caesar. The speech of Mark Antony brings about the change in their attitude.

Questions 11-14: Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow. (4 × 1 = 4)

The life of a plant begins, for many, as a tiny, unassuming seed. This seed, often no bigger than a speck of dust or as large as a golf ball, holds within it the blueprint for a complex, living organism It is a marvel of biological engineeringa protective package containing an embryo, a supply of food, and a hard outer casing called the seed coat.

A seed’s existence is a waiting game. It lies dormant, sometimes for years, until the conditions are just right for germination. These conditions typically include adequate moisture, the correct temperature, and sometimes, a little bit of light or even the scarring action of a passing animal’s digestive system. The seed is a master strategist, ensuring its offspring only begins to grow when the chances of survival are highest.

Once the optimal conditions are met, the seed coat breaks open. The embryo awakens, drawing energy from its stored food supply. The first thing to emerge is the radicle, which will become the plant’s root system, anchoring it firmly and beginning the search for water and nutrients. Shortly after, the plumule, the embryonic shoot, pushes upwards, striving toward the sunlight.

This emerging seedling is incredibly vulnerable, but its rapid growth is a testament to nature’s efficiency. It quickly unfurls its first leaves, which immediately begin the process of photosynthesis, turning sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into the energy it needs to grow tall, flower, and eventually, produce its own batch of seeds, completing the incredible cycle of life.

Answer:
In this session, we are going to tell you something about the play “Shakuntalam” by Kalidasa. Kalidasa was a famous playwright who lived between the 4th and 5th century AD. It is the story of King Dushyanta meeting Shakuntala and falling in love with her. Shakuntala is the daughter of Sage Kanva. She lives in the hermitage of Kanva. In the hermitage we find the beauty of nature at its best. We see trees and plants growing luxuriously, taken care of by Sage Kanva, Shakuntala and her friends – Anasuya and Priyamvada.

We see deer, parrots, bees and other things moving about freely in the garden. We see the beautiful jasmine vine creeping on the mango tree. They look like husband and wife. The beautiful jasmine vine is the wife and the strong mango tree is the husband.

In the beginning of the play we see Dushyanta chasing a deer. He is ready to shoot it with his arrow when a hermit tells him not to shoot it, as it belongs to the hermitage. The king obeys the hermit and puts his arrow back in his quiver. Dushyanta does not want to disturb the calm and quiet of the hermitage. He dismounts from his chariot and walks towards the hermitage. He sees Shakuntala and her friends Anasuya and Priyamvada watering the trees and plants, and chitchatting in a pleasant way. Dushyanta is enamoured by the beauty of Shakuntala and falls in love with her. It is a story of love at first sight.

(A) “In the Attic”, the pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman who is the writer of the story, is an important character. Prepare a character sketch of Wladyslaw Szpilman. (1 × 6 = 6)
Answer:
Wladyslaw Szpilman was a Polish Jewish pianist, classical composer and Holocaust survivor. He became a popular performer on Polish Radio and in concert. Confined within the Warsaw Ghetto after the German invasion of Poland, Szpilman spent some years in hiding. We see his life in the attic and in the loft. When he was there, he was helped by a German officer, Wilm Hosenfeld, who hated Hitler and his anti-Jewish policies. We see him sitting groaning and gazing dully at things. He is never at ease as at any time he could be captured and killed. His life in the attic is one of anxiety, worry, suffering and hunger. But he is optimistic. He knows things will change in due course.

We see him thinking of his home, parents, two sisters and a brother. He lost all of them. We see him thinking of the Christmas and New Year celebrations before the war and during the war. He is wearing a German military coat given to him by the German officer. This coat might have killed him as the Polish soldiers think he is a German because of the coat. He is very grateful to the German officer who was kind to him. Before the officer goes away he tells him his name and his place of work and asks him to contact him for any help he might need once the war is over. Finally we see him free and once again assuming his work at the Polish Radio.

(A) In “Beloved Boles”, Mr. Student is perplexed by the story of Teresa’s imaginary lover and her unusual letters. Later, he understands that Teresa had invented the imaginary lover because she was terribly lonely. He felt ashamed of his prejudices and misjudgements. He writes a letter to one of his close friends detailing his experiences. Write the possible letter. (1 × 6 = 6)
Answer:

Moscow
10 October 1930

Dearest Popovich,
I hope this letter finds you well and that your studies are progressing well. I am writing this letter to tell you of something new I learned about human predicament.

Opposite my room lives Teresa. She is tall and strong, with bushy dark brown hair and a large coarse face. She has dark eyes. She speaks with a bass voice. She also had a bad reputation. I was so prejudiced against her that I never left my door open when I knew she was in her apartment.

She once came to me and said she wanted me to write a letter to her lover Boles. She dictated it to me and I wrote it. She came back to me after some days and told me I should write another letter as a reply from Boles. I got annoyed and told her she is a liar and there is no one called Boles. She went away quite sadly. So I went to her room and had a discussion with her.

I then realised her plight. She was lonely and she invented this lover. When she makes some people read the letter written by her and the reply she supposedly gets she feels happy that there is someone to love her. I felt empathetic and I agreed to write the reply also. I continued doing that. Teresa repaid for my services by mending the holes in my socks, shirt and other items of clothing. We have become god friends now.

I feel sorry that I had misjudged her and treated her harshly. But now things are fine between us and we are happy.

Say Hi to your parents,
Yours lovingly,
Mr. Student

Answer:
News Report
Ahmedabad, 12th June 2025: Today, the city of Ahmedabad witnessed one of the worst air disasters in recent Indian history. Air India Flight 171 a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner scheduled for London Gatwick, crashed moments after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at approximately 1:39 PM 1ST.The flight, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, lifted off but tragically lost altitude only 32 seconds later. The aircraft plummeted into the campus of the B. J. Medical College, a short distance from the runway. The massive impact caused the plane to break apart, and the resulting fire, fuelled by the aircraft’s kerosene, severely damaged several buildings, including student hostels and a mess hall.

This terrible accident resulted in a huge loss of life. Of the 242 people on board, 241 were killed, with only one passenger miraculously surviving. Additionally, 19 people on the ground also lost their lives, and 67 others were seriously injured. The total number of fatalities is confirmed to be 260. Rescue efforts by emergency teams, including NDRF, police, and fire services, were immediate, but the intensity of the fire made the operation extremely difficult.

According to the preliminary report released on July 12, the initial cause is suspected to be a sudden loss of thrust from both engines. Investigators found that the fuel control switches for both engines moved from the ‘RUN’ position to ‘CUTOFF’ within one second of each other shortly after liftoff. The Cockpit Voice Recording revealed confusion among the pilots regarding why the fuel supply was cut.

The investigation is looking into all possibilities, including a potential technical malfunction, human error, or even a system design issue. The civil aviation ministry has assured the public that the investigation is being conducted with full transparency.
