It was a sunny morning. The sunlight was golden. It gave good colours to the housetops. The air was clean and refreshing. The sun rays peeped into Ricky’s room. Ricky was 11 years old. He was still in bed. He lived in a beautiful, modern house. It had everything one wants. Ricky was a careless boy. He threw things around. His mother had to collect things from different corners.

Ricky’s mother was a manager of a bank. She left in the morning for work. She asked Ricky to do some things – keep the school bag in the study room, put his clothes in the washing machine, wash his tiffin box and iron his T-shirt and trousers. But he always played.

Ricky did not help much in the work at home. But he was very happy when his parents bought the latest model of a butler robot. It started cooking, cleaning and ironing. The most important work it had was picking Ricky’s clothes from the floor. When Ricky went to sleep, his bedroom was very untidy. Things were thrown here and there. But when he got up next morning everything was clean and tidy. He was happy.

The robot had cleaned Ricky’s bed room so neatly that Ricky could not find his favourite T-shirt and football. He asked his mother about them. Even after searching for long, he could not get them. The same thing happened with his other things. He knew the robot was the one who created the problem.

Ricky made a plan to spy on the robot. He followed it around the house. Finally he caught it red- handed when it was taking one of his clothes. He followed the robot without making any sound. He saw the robot folding his T-shirt and keeping it on a pile of clothes in the store room. He ran to his parents. He told his father that the robot is faulty and it should be sent away. His father was an expert on robotics. He said he was happy with the robot. Ricky wanted the robot to be sent away. There was a big argument between him and his father.

His father said the robot was doing a wonderful job. But Ricky said it was doing more harm than good. His father said Ricky did not know how a robot works. Ricky said this robot was not properly programmed. He kept complaining about the robot.

One day as the robot was passing nearby, it heard the boy’s complaints. The robot came back with a pair of Ricky’s shoes and some of his clothes. The robot said it was sorry that it was bothering him.

Ricky called the robot a thief, saying that it has been hiding his things for weeks. The robot said when it saw things scattered all over it thought he did not need them. It is programmed to collect all the unwanted things. At night it sends them to places where other humans can use them. It is a maximum efficiency machine. Wasn’t Ricky aware of it?

Ricky was ashamed. All his life he had treated things as if they were useless. He cared for nothing. There were many people who would be glad to have Ricky’s things. They would have taken good care of them. He realised that the robot was not mis-programmed. It had been programmed well.

Since then Ricky decided to become a “Maximum Efficient Boy”. He took proper care of his things. He made sure he did not have more than what was necessary. He learned a lesson from the robot. He used his pocket money to help people to buy the things they need.

നല്ല തെളിച്ചമുള്ള ഒരു ദിവസമായിരുന്നു അന്ന്. സ്വർണ്ണനിറത്തിലുള്ള സൂര്യപ്രകാശം. വീടുകളുടെ മുക ളിൽ ഈ പ്രകാശം നല്ല നിറം പകർത്തി. വായു നല്ല വൃത്തിയുള്ളതും ഉന്മേഷം ഉളവാക്കുന്നതുമായിരുന്നു. സൂര്യരശ്മികൾ റിക്കിയുടെ മുറിയിലേക്ക് ഒളിഞ്ഞു നോക്കി. റിക്കിക്ക് 11 വയസ്സാണ്. അവൻ ഇപ്പോഴും കിട ക്കുകയാണ്. അവന്റെ വീട് വളരെ സുന്ദരമായതും ഏറ്റവും ആധുനിക തരത്തിലുള്ള തു മാ യി രു ന്നു. അതിൽ എല്ലാത്തരം ഉപകരണങ്ങളും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. റിക്കി വളരെ അശ്രദ്ധയുള്ള ഒരു കുട്ടിയാണ്. അവൻ സാധനങ്ങൾ അവിടേയും ഇവിടേയും വലിച്ചെറിയും. പല മൂലകളിൽ നിന്നും അവന്റെ അമ്മക്ക് എല്ലാം ശേഖ രിക്കണമായിരുന്നു.

റിക്കിയുടെ അമ്മ ഒരു ബാങ്ക് മാനേജരാണ്. അവർക്ക് കാലത്തേതന്നെ ജോലിക്കുപോകണം. പോകുന്ന തിനു മുൻപ് അവർ റിക്കിയോട് ചില കാര്യങ്ങൾ ചെയ്യാൻ പറയും – സ്കൂൾ ബാഗ് സ്റ്റഡി റൂമിൽ വക്കു ക, മുഷിഞ്ഞ തുണികൾ വാഷിംഗ് മെഷീനിൽ ഇടുക, ചോറ്റുപാത്രം കഴുകുക, റ്റീ ഷർട്ടും പാന്റസു മൊക്കെ ഇസ്തിരിയിടുക മുതലായവ. പക്ഷേ അവൻ എപ്പോഴും വിവിധ കളികളിൽ മുഴുകുമായിരുന്നു.

റിക്കി വീട്ടുജോലികളിൽ സഹായിച്ചിരുന്നില്ല. പക്ഷേ അവന്റെ മാതാപിതാക്കൾ അത്യാധുനികമായ ഒരു ബട്ട്ലർ റോബൊട്ട് വീട്ടിലേക്കായി വാങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ അവന് വലിയ സന്തോഷമായി. റോബോട്ട് ഭക്ഷണം പാകം ചെയ്യാനും വീട് വൃത്തിയാക്കാനും, തുണികൾ ഇസ്തിരിയിടാനും തുടങ്ങി. അതിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാന ജോലി റിക്കി അവിടേയും ഇവിടേയും എറിയുന്ന തുണികൾ പെറുക്കിയെടുക്കുക എന്നതായിരുന്നു. റിക്കി ഉറങ്ങാൻ പോയപ്പോൾ അവന്റെ കിടപ്പുമുറി ആകെ അലങ്കോലമായിട്ടാണ് കിടന്നിരുന്നത്. നങ്ങൾ അവിടേയും ഇവിടേയും ആയി കിടക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷേ പിറ്റേ ദിവസം രാവിലെ അവൻ എഴുന്നേറ്റപ്പോൾ കണ്ടത് എല്ലാം വളരെ ഭംഗിയായി അതാതു സ്ഥാനത്ത് അടുക്കി വച്ചതായിട്ടാണ്. അവന്

റോബൊട്ടിനെ രഹസ്യമായി നിരീക്ഷിക്കാൻ റിക്കി തീരുമാനിച്ചു. അവൻ അതിന്റെ പുറകേ പോയി. അവ സാനം അവന്റെ ഒരു തുണി റോബോട്ട് എടുത്തപ്പോൾ അവൻ റോബോട്ടിനെ കയ്യോടെ പിടിച്ചു. റിക്കി റോബോട്ടിന്റെ പുറകെ ശബ്ദമൊന്നും ഉണ്ടാക്കാതെ നടക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അപ്പോൾ അവൻ കണ്ടു റോബൊട്ട് തന്റെ T-ഷർട്ട് മടക്കി അത് സ്റ്റോർ റൂമിൽ ഒരു കൂട്ടം തുണികളുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ വക്കുന്നത്. റിക്കി മാതാപിതാക്കളുടെ അടുത്തേക്കോടി. അവൻ അവന്റെ പിതാവിനോടു പറഞ്ഞു റോബോട്ട് ശരിയല്ലെന്നും അതിനെ അവിടെ നിന്നും പറഞ്ഞയക്കണമെന്നും. റിക്കിയുടെ പിതാവ് ഒരു റോബോട്ടിക്ക് വിദഗ്ധനായി രുന്നു. അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു റോബോട്ട് ശരിയായാണ് കാര്യങ്ങൾ ചെയ്യുന്നതെന്ന്. പക്ഷേ റിക്കിക്ക് അതിനെ മാറ്റണം. അവൻ വാശിയിലാണ്. അവനും അവന്റെ പിതാവുമായി നല്ല ഒരു തർക്കമുണ്ടായി.
